Dear McGehee Family,

From the first moment I stepped onto the McGehee campus more than fifteen years ago I felt a powerful sense of our school’s history. At McGehee, our history is a living, breathing entity that constantly informs our present. Each day in my office I gaze at the portrait of Miss McGehee and am reminded of her words: “None should fail”. Every member of McGehee’s faculty is invested with the same mission – to find and engage each student’s passion and develop a lifelong love of learning.

If the school’s history teaches us anything, it is that McGehee is and has been, from its inception, a dynamic and ever-changing institution – even as it has created and sustained its own traditions, ranging from Founders Day, May Day to the Daisy Chain at Graduation. Given such a context it was a delight for me to preside over McGehee’s 100th birthday celebration. What is particularly gratifying was the excitement on campus and among our McGehee family.

During this historic year a dazzling array of on-campus activities was organized, led by Centennial Chair Betsy Shaw Nalty ’60. These included: school opening celebrations with a second line parade; the opening of our magnificent archival display; the publication of our Centennial book, The Past, The Present, The Promise; an unforgettable Founder’s Day, with our keynote speaker former First Lady LauraBush; culminating in a glittering gala with over eight hundred attendees.

Like those who came before them, our current students provide the true raison d’ être for the school’s existence and for the Centennial Campaign. The campaign will provide a new home for the Middle School in Abby Hall; a STEM Center; new classrooms for 3rd and 4th grades and the Little Gate; and the addition of $1,000,000 to our Endowment Fund. These important projects support our faculty and above all our students and the teaching and study that goes on inside our gates. To date the Centennial Campaign stands at $5,000,000 toward our goal of $7,012,000.

The lists of donors that follow in these pages are a testament to the power of the McGehee legacy and the promise of a McGehee future. We are profoundly grateful for your support.

Miss McGehee founded our school on the principle of providing a first-rate college-preparatory education for young women in New Orleans, a rare opportunity at that time. It is incumbent upon us to continue to create the finest educational opportunities with the full range of resources to allow every girl to succeed. When this becomes possible, we work entirely within the spirit of our founder and once again history comes full-circle.

Sincerely,

Eileen Friel Powers Headmistress

16 Louise S. McGehee School

Parent Annual Giving Where McGehee leads, others follow.

For one hundred years, the Louise S. McGehee School has been famed in our community as an innovator. In 2009-2010 McGehee began our phenomenally successful, parent-driven, email campaign: in our first year the participation rate rose from the mid 70% range to 91%.

Every year since, we have continued to raise our level of achievement: Parent Annual Giving reached 92% in 2010-2011, and this year, our 72 volunteer Grade Captains - led by PAG Co-Chairs Sarabeth Gordon and John Lagarde – worked tirelessly in their own time to break a new record of parent giving at McGehee. Please refer to the listing of these dedicated parents on page 60.

93% of parents made an Annual Giving gift in 2011-2012, putting McGehee in the top 5% of independent schools of our size in the nation for parent giving.*

Why is Parent Giving so important? During each fiscal year, gifts to the Annual Fund account for $1 in every $8 available for the school to meet its immediate needs. McGehee’s operating expenses are very much concentrated on people, with compensation (including wages and benefits) accounting for nearly two-thirds of all expenditures in the budget. A relatively small but crucial 4% is allocated toward the constant renewal of McGehee’s technological and architectural resources. This includes our uncommonly beautiful campus that makes McGehee such a uniquely hospitable setting for a learning community.

When parents contribute to McGehee with gifts or volunteer time, they ensure a new generation of young women will be ready for the challenges outside our Gates.

2011-2012 Annual Report 31

Alumnae Finish FirstFifty percent of McGehee’s alumnae contributed to Alumnae Annual Giving in fiscal year 2011-2012. McGehee had the 2nd highest alumnae participation in the country of all girls’ independent schools with a similar size enrollment.*

Fifty percent of alumnae have quantified what McGehee means to them by donating to Alumnae Annual Giving—ensuring that future generations also benefit from the same fulfilling educational experience.

Together the alumnae gifts combined to contribute 43% of the overall income generated by Annual Giving last fiscal year. Accounting for 3% of the operating budget, alumnae gifts supported McGehee’s stellar faculty, innovative academic programs, competitive athletic program, cutting-edge technology, and more.

By finishing first and achieving 50% alumnae participation, alumnae have indicated that Miss McGehee’s mission—to foster a commitment to lifelong learning—is an experience that truly lasts a lifetime.

Faculty Annual Giving at 100%!Our record-breaking achievement of 100% Faculty Giving for the second year in a row is an extraordinary accomplishment for McGehee. A special thanks to our faculty leaders: Paula Fletcher; Jeanne Bendana; Dan Orth and Noel Waddington.

Please be aware that while many schools nationwide claim 100% faculty participation we can assure you that this is done with smoke and mirrors and not real gifts i.e. a small gift is deducted from each paycheck at the beginning of the year as part of the faculty’s contractual obligations. McGehee’s has never subscribed to this practice as voluntary faculty support is a sign of their belief in the school and its mission.

We are often asked why is 100% faculty participation an important goal?

1. A privilege to appreciate – and to perpetuate. McGehee is a family community of students, teachers and parents who share a commitment to the mission and values of the education provided here. It is a privilege for all of us to be a part of this community and with the privilege comes the responsibility to ensure that the school continues to flourish.

2. Faculty engagement generates added support. Philanthropy today has a very strong measurement criteria and faculty giving is an important indicator. The highest level of faculty participation can directly influence a potential donor’s decision to invest in McGehee.

3. Those individuals who have the added benefit of being faculty parents receive a generous tuition remission. Only McGehee and one other local independent school provide this important benefit. The Board of Trustees especially looks to this group to give back to the school by participating in Annual Giving.

McGehee has achieved its remarkable success through our faculty. Each of our faculty members brings a passion for his/her discipline, a commitment to and a belief in the power of education and a desire to involve themselves deeply in the lives of the young people in our care. The hard work they put forth on a daily basis makes McGehee such a remarkable school.

The gifts that come in throughout the year from parents, grandparents, alumnae and friends are all in direct response to faculty excellence: a faculty member who has taken extra time with a student who is struggling; a faculty member who is always accessible to parents seeking advice; a faculty member who is a cheerleader for promising students and pushes them to take risks and achieve more than they dreamed possible.

When we hold alumnae gatherings across the country, one theme always emerges: stories of beloved faculty members who believed in their potential to accomplish any goal.

Thank you McGehee faculty.

Adelaide Wisdom Benjamin ’50 Hall

In recognition of Adelaide Wisdom Benjamin’s extraordinary gift to the Centennial Campaign we are proud to announce that the “First Street Building”, 2344 St. Charles Avenue, will henceforth be known as Adelaide Wisdom Benjamin ’50 Hall.

For more than six decades Adelaide has supported McGehee in every aspect of school life. She created and funded the Peggy McGehee Wisdom Faculty Scholarship, established in memory of her beloved Aunt Peggy. Each year, these funds provide four faculty members with professional development opportunities of their choosing, including study and travel abroad.

Adelaide is the benefactor of the McGehee School Library and her gift funded the library’s relocation to the Bradish Johnson House. The library is named in her honor. Additionally, Adelaide has always been keenly interested in trusteeship and was instrumental in initiating and sustaining the extraordinary board leadership that guides the school today.

She is the largest individual donor to McGehee and this year serves as the Honorary Co-Chair of the Centennial Capital Campaign. Without Adelaide’s wonderful gifts, wise counsel and strong leadership, McGehee would not have the pre-eminent place in the New Orleans educational community that we enjoy today.

As we continue our Centennial Celebration, we look forward to a new century of academic excellence. But we can’t do it alone!

100 Gifts for

100 Years

You can help shape the legacy of McGehee with a gift of the future for the future. With a few simple sentences in your will, you can leave a charitable bequest to McGehee that will continue to support the school well into our next century. Our goal is to collect 100 bequests before the end of our 100th year.

001gifts

We suggest you allocate a small percentage of your estate or securities portfolio -- say 5%, 10% or 15%. In that way, the needs of your family will be met first, no matter the value of the gift. We cannot close the gates on the last century without making a strong commitment to the next. Please join us. Take your place in history by helping shape our future.

A gift in your will, called a bequest, lets you donate to McGehee on your terms:

FLEXIBLE -- Because you are not actually making a gift until after your lifetime, you can change your mind at any time.

VERSATILE -- You can structure the bequest in many ways and even specify certain needs of the school that you would like to see met.

CONVENIENT -- You have access to your assets throughout your lifetime.

If you want to get started right away, we have information on our website that can help you with explanations of the various types of gifts, including calculators and comparison charts.

100 Gifts for 100 Years: Donna Apgar ’60 Endowment Fund

Donna Apgar began her study of French at McGehee and graduated in 1960. She is the daughter of Warren C. and Leah Mae Apgar who were enthusiastic world travelers and encouraged the same. Leah Mae was President of McGehee Parents’ League in the late 1950s and arranged a Washington trip for the Class of 1960 which included meeting John F. Kennedy. Both Warren and Leah Mae were active McGehee supporters. Donna is the sister of Judy Apgar Webb ’62.

Donna received her undergraduate degree from Tufts University in 1964 with a major in French. She found her study abroad in France to be a life-changing opportunity. Donna pursued a Master’s degree in French at Middlebury College and spent her career inspiring and enabling others to have valuable study abroad experiences. Prior to retirement, she was Director of International Learning at Central Piedmont Community

College in Charlotte, North Carolina.

It is her desire with this gift to McGehee’s Endowment Fund to give future students the opportunity to experience the world and its tapestry of cultures first hand.

The Society of 1912The Society of 1912 recognizes those donors who have supported McGehee with a planned gift. We honor their generosity with lifetime membership in this prestigious society. Their promise is McGehee’s future.

Giving Back Times TwoCarla (Corona ’93) and husband Will Brundige moved from New Orleans to Phoenix, AZ five years ago. Despite the distance, both are still very connected to the city and their alma maters. Each year the pair participates in their schools’ Annual Giving programs, and by utilizing their employers’ matching gifts programs, they double the gift each school receives. McGehee sat down with Carla this fall to discuss why she gives back.

What is your philosophy on philanthropy? Will and I believe in helping causes whose missions we believe in and that are near to our hearts. We both feel strongly about supporting our alma maters.

Why do you make a matching gift to McGehee?I had such a wonderful experience at McGehee, my years there helped shape who I am today. I donate annually to help to ensure that future generations continue to experience all the wonderful things that McGehee offers. With a company match, my gift doubles and provides extra resources to the students. In addition, companies encourage their employees to use the matching gift program, as it is a vehicle for them to be active contributors in the community.

How does your spouse feel about matching your gift to McGehee? Will knows how much McGehee means to me. He also understands that the matching gift program is part of the company’s outreach into the community, especially as his company is active in supporting S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Also, if our future paths ever bring us back to New Orleans, we would love for our girls to attend McGehee and our donations help to ensure the future is bright for the next generation of McGehee girls.

How did you know about your company’s matching gift program? The company promotes its matching gift program as part of new hire orientation and the information is available on the company intranet. During annual volunteer month and other community outreach programs, the company emphasizes its matching gift program and encourages employees to submit their eligible gifts for the company match. The McGehee website also offers a search engine that allows you to determine if your company matches contributions.

How did you know that you were eligible for your spouse’s matching gift program?I used the tool on the McGehee website that allows you to search by company name and saw that his company matches as well. Knowing that we are fortunate to work for companies with matching gift programs that encourage employees to utilize the matches, we maximized our annual giving contribution by having both companies match.

How do the benefits of participating in a matching gift program affect your philanthropic goals? Our goals don’t change based upon the matching gift programs. We donate as we would regardless of the match, but the matching gift programs do increase the amount of our donations and provide additional resources to organizations we choose to support. It is a nice way to help support the causes you believe in even beyond what you are able to give.

For more information about matching gifts, or to see if your or your spouse’s company is eligible for a match, scan the QR code to the right, visit www.mcgeheeschool.com/giving/matching-gifts or call 504-274-4915.

McGehee SustainersThe Louise S. McGehee School is particularly grateful to the following donors, who have made a commitment to the school’s operating budget beyond the term of an annual gift. By scheduling regu-lar monthly or quarterly payments via their credit card or bank draft without a specified end date, the following donors give McGehee a consistent source of revenue to sustain the McGehee experience for our girls. Thank you, McGehee Sustainers!*
