Letter from the Executive Director

Dear friends,

2010 was truly a landmark year for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. While we celebrated significant accomplishments during this tenth anniversary year, we also recognized the need to accelerate activities in the fight against mesothelioma. The Foundation Board determined to take bold steps and set ambitious goals. The goals, both short and long-term, focus primarily on leading mesothelioma research advances and exponentially increasing our outreach capacity.

This year, the Foundation’s annual request for grant applications resulted in 43 submissions from mesothelioma researchers around the world. The top ranked seven were funded. One of the funded projects aims to identify protein inhibitors for meso treatment. Another will explore the use of nano-particle for more effective delivery of chemotherapy to cancer cells left behind after surgery. With the addition of the 2010 awards, the Foundation has now awarded 71 grants, totaling $7.1 million.

It is our intent for every mesothelioma patient and their personal support teams to be aware of and have access to our support and educational resources. We know a key component of achieving this is to raise awareness of mesothelioma and drive visitors to curemeso.org. To that end, we celebrated our first Mesothelioma Awareness Day event on Rockefeller Plaza. Nearly 100 community members, in matching curemeso.org t-shirts, descended en masse on September 26 during The Today Show broadcast. We also successfully secured enough co-sponsors to pass a congressional proclamation officially marking September 26th as Mesothelioma Awareness Day.

In 2010 the Meso Foundation underwent a major change by relocating from Santa Barbara, California to Alexandria, Virginia (you can see the photo of the new offices on the back cover of this publication). The objective was to position the Foundation’s operations close to where the majority of cancer and mesothelioma research experts convene. We also chose a location where the entire community would feel welcome and become engaged in Foundation activities.

The Meso Foundation’s 2010 Annual Report is presented for your review. On behalf of the board, staff and the entire meso community, please accept our gratitude for your generous support of the Foundation’s mission programs described on the following pages. We ask for your continued participation in the Meso Foundation’s mission and invite you to work with us as together we set in motion a ‘new era’ of promise and discovery to eradicate mesothelioma and ease the suffering of those affected by it.

The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation funds critically-needed research to eradicate mesothelioma as a life-ending disease. The Foundation’s Science Advisory Board (SAB) members, comprised of leading mesothelioma physicians and researchers from around the world, use their expertise to review and rank grant proposals submitted by their peers. Based on the funds generously donated, the Board of Directors awards grants to the most promising projects. In 2010, three research grants awarded through the Meso Foundation’s competitive peer-reviewed program, were funded by three families in memory of the loved ones they lost to meso. The families of Lance S. Ruble, Franz Losch, and Beth Ann Miller contributed $100,000 each through personal gifts and/or through fundraising efforts through the “Named Research Grants” program.

Under the direction of our medical liaison, nurse practitioner Mary Hesdorffer, the Foundation provides education and support services to patients, their families and loved ones, community physicians, medical personnel and others affected by mesothelioma. In 2010, the Foundation provided free-of-charge support to hundreds of patients, their families, and other interested parties through:

• One-on-one medical consultations

• Educational materials for patients and their families

• Online community groups

• The International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma

• Annual publications

• Educational videos slides and other information online

• Clinical trial referrals

• Telephone support groups

In late 2010, the Foundation, for the first time, instituted organized telephone support groups for those coping with the loss of a spouse. This new program has shown tremendous interest and promise, and we expect to further establish it and grow it in the upcoming year.

Once again, the 7th International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma was an important meeting ground for the meso community, including patients, their families, those who have lost loved ones to meso,

physicians and other professionals. Nearly 300 attendees joined us to listen to scientific and community presentations, and to participate in social and support activities. Hundreds more watched the videos of the presentations available on curemeso.org.

Each year, three outstanding members of the meso community are honored during the Symposium. In 2010, the Meso Foundation proudly honored Dr. Courtney Broaddus for her groundbreaking research and perserverance in her work; The Bendix Family for their tireless efforts volunteering their time to raise awareness and funds for mesothelioma research; and to Senator Max Baucus for his dedication to banning asbestos and curing mesothelioma.

2010 represented an important step forward in building awareness of mesothelioma.

In conjunction with the International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma, in 2010 meso advocates lobbied their Congressional representatives to pass a proclamation declaring September 26th as the official National Mesothelioma Awareness Day. Congress heard our advocates loud and clear, and unanimously passed the bi-cameral, bipartisan resolution.

This particular legislation was introduced in the House by Congresswoman Betty McCollum (D-MN) and in the Senate by Senator Patty Murray (D-WA). Congresswoman McCollum, whose predecessor Bruce Vento died of mesothelioma just nine months after diagnosis, has been a stalwart champion for our cause. Senator Murray, whose home state has one of the highest rates of mesothelioma in the United States due to the large naval presence, has long been a champion for a ban on asbestos and mesothelioma research funding. In the House, 58 representatives evidenced their full support of our mission by co-signing the bill.

Mesothelioma Awareness Day was first established in 2004 by a small group of Meso Foundation volunteers who joined together to raise awareness of this terrible disease. Since then, hundreds of volunteers across the nation have requested that their city, county and state governments establish local proclamations of Mesothelioma Awareness Day. The meso community hopes that the Congressionally recognized Meso Awareness Day will continue to educate the public about the mesothelioma tragedy each year.

Also in 2010, for the first time, the Meso Foundation staff and nearly 80 meso community members, participated in the first ever Meso Awareness Day on the Plaza. The event is meant to raise awareness of mesothelioma nationally by appearing on the Today Show.
