Connecting With Our Historyhellip

Link a non-denominational middle school was founded in 1969 by the Sisters of St Dominic of Caldwell NJ in response to the 1967 Newark riots that left much of the Central Ward in poverty The Sisters desired that Link be a force for restoration in the devastated city by providing educational excellence for its youth Today the need for high caliber education in Newarkrsquos poorest neighborhoods is as great as ever

For 37 years Link Community School has remained deeply committed to the pursuit of its mission and the fulfillment of its vision Link has created a powerful and highly effective learning community for the children of economically disadvantaged families in Newark and the surrounding urban areas We know the school begun as Project Link in 1969 works Year after year the school has yielded measurable results and the 2005-2006 school year is no exception as you will note from this annual report The success of the school is made possible through the efforts of a devoted board of trustees a committed faculty and staff and generous donors and partners To continue to build upon past successes the Strategic Planning Council a team of staff members and trustees led by Principal Marnie McKoy developed a new Strategic Plan for Link spanning 2006 through 2011 This new plan to be implemented in the 2006-2007 school year outlines the steps needed not only to maintain what we have established but also to meet the challenges and opportunities the school will face in the future We are extremely grateful to all those who sustain Links mission and vision providing a nurturing yet demanding educational environment where urban students will thrive and achieve academic excellence With your support Link will be able to continue to report the success of our schoolmdashand our studentsmdashfor many years to come


A message from the Principal Marnie G McKoy

ldquoAll hail LCSrdquo This is the title and opening line of Linkrsquos new school song penned and musically arranged by Link students from the classes of 2005 and 2006mdasha collaboration that reflects the spirit of Link Community School It is a song full of pride and celebration much like this Annual Report This report reflects the continuation of a work that began in 1969 and has continued successfully because of the collaboration among students parents staff trustees and donors We are proud of the progress we have made this year and are excited to share this report with you You will read about the additions to our program a theater arts course a health course and a seventh grade study hall Also noteworthy are the studentsrsquo stellar standardized test results which have improved four grade levels We were fortunate to continue pre-existing programs and to introduce new ones As our new school song states ldquoWersquoll never forget that [you] were a part of Link Communityrdquo Because of your support Linkrsquos mark on the lives of our students is indelible Although they leave our school the academic and moral lessons that they learned at Link last a lifetime Your continued support energizes us and enables us to change lives each day As you read this report we invite you to celebrate with us for this yearrsquos results are reflective of a collaborative effort We will serve the underserved until there is no longer a need to do so Until then ldquoAll Hail LCSrdquo


Impressive student results Standardized Test Scores As measured by a pre-test and a post-test the cumulative scores of the graduating class of 2006 increased by 40 grade levels overall in reading language math and social studies on the national McGraw-Hill CTB standardized test far surpassing the expected level of 18 The studentsrsquo growth in the core subjects was just as remarkable 40 in reading 47 in language 39 in math and 30 in social studies The scores for the seventh grade in 2006 were equally outstanding and increased by 23 grade levels overall versus an expected level of 08 High School Acceptances 100 of the graduating class of 2006 was accepted to at least one quality private or magnet high school of the studentsrsquo choice Additionally 97 of the class was accepted to at least 2 or more schools High School Awards Linkrsquos graduating class included five Wight Foundation scholars and one NJ SEEDS scholar High School Scholarships The graduating class earned $1003530 in scholarships and financial aid or grants to some of the best high schools in the country including Phillips Exeter Academy Purnell School Groton School Berkshire School The Pingry School Benedictine Academy Seton Hall Prep Newark Academy Lacordaire Academy

Oratory Prep Westover School Immaculate Conception High School Marist High School St Vincent Academy St Benedictrsquos Prep St Patrick High School St Mary of the Assumption High School St Anthony High School and Marylawn of the Oranges Academy High School Graduation In a survey of our 2002 graduates we were able to reach 50 of the 60 alumni or 83 of the class and have learned that 100 graduated high school The high school graduation rate of Link alumni far exceeds the graduation rate for the City of Newark (69) and the high school graduation rate for New Jersey statewide (86) Additionally 92 of Linkrsquos Class of lsquo02 enrolled in college or a trade school or enlisted in the armed services

Significant academic program enhancements loz Initiated Differentiated Instruction in order to address the

different learning styles and needs of all students loz Expanded instructional time for art music theater arts

and computer classes to provide teachers with more time to teach concepts students more time to apply concepts in greater depth and to allow for a more consistent and regular approach to lessons and projects

Year in Review 2005-2006


loz Piloted a new health initiative called ldquoHealthy Mind Healthy Bodyrdquo which included a new health curriculum an enhanced physical education curriculum and social work services three times each week

loz Introduced a theater arts course which provided students

with an understanding of play production playwriting and acting techniques

loz Increased the use of technology in education by providing

teachers with additional tools including SmartBoards in three classrooms and mini computer labs in two classrooms

loz Created uniform standards across curriculum regarding

grades homework and quality of writing to be implemented and evaluated in the 2006-2007 school year

loz Provided study hall for seventh graders twice each week

to begin their homework work on projects and obtain individual help from teachers as needed

loz Moved to a quarter system for the academic year resulting

in the issuance of Progress Reports three times per year instead of two to afford more assessment of students and more opportunities to celebrate and give recommendations for improvement

loz Ensured services for students needing academic assistance by arranging for a Title I tutor for students who qualified under that federally funded program and five volunteer

tutors for other students who needed assistance in math and language arts

loz Strengthened high school placement preparation by

offering a class two times per week in the first and second quarters and adding a SSAT preparation component

loz Provided electives which enrich the knowledge of

students including African dance History of Hip-Hop gospel choir yearbook public speaking forensics (debate) and computer repair

Notable institutional advancements loz Recruited and retained an excellent staff for the 2005-2006

school year including the hiring of teachers with advanced degrees and an average of twelve years of teaching experience

loz Provided the financial resources for an outstanding

academic program an excellent staff and on-going maintenance of the physical plant by raising the $18 million needed to run the school through the enormous generosity of trustees and other individual supporters foundations corporations churches and civic groups


loz Developed a new 5-year strategic plan with measurable objectives to address strategic challenges and guide future institutional growth through 2011 Principal Marnie G McKoy as chairperson convened a committee representing all stakeholdersmdashboard administrators staff parents and alumni to form Linkrsquos third strategic plan Approved in May 2006 the plan will be implemented in September 2006

loz Installed the Student Information System (SIS) a

customized electronic system allowing teachers to record grading information maintain classroom management records create lesson plans note studentsrsquo learning styles and track parentteacher contacts

loz Continued professional development for teachers with a

focus on student assessment incorporating differentiated instruction practices in the classroom and integrating the Core Performance Standards and technology into teaching All staff visited high schools that Link alumni attend and shadowed alumni for the day This allowed staff to celebrate the ways Link prepares students socially and academically while providing an opportunity to reflect on areas needing improvement

loz Passed a mid-point accreditation review by the Middle

States Association of Colleges and Schools

loz Completed our second year of the Summer Boys Academy a four week long academy serving seventeen boys who were rising 6th graders from schools in Newark East Orange Orange and Irvington by combining rigorous academic curriculum with sports and outdoor education

loz Cultivated and facilitated a stronger parent involvement in

the school by assisting parents in formalizing the PTG organization and communication structure publishing a bi-monthly newsletter for parents and offering workshops for parents on financing private education financial literacy choosing boarding schools as an option for high school discussing sex with their children and nutrition for children

loz Continued to strengthen our contact with alumni and their

involvement in the school by hiring an Alumni and Parent Relations Associate who continued with visits to high schools with Link alumni and coordinated a homecoming eventreunion for the class of 1995 Career Day and the Annual Family BBQ which involved both the school community and the alumni

loz Completed several refurbishment projects including

renovating the Music Lab and stage in the auditoriumcafeteriagym


Showcasing Student Talents Our students have routinely performed African Dance plays and skits and music pieces for in-school programs and events such as morning assemblies the Kwanzaa celebration Grandparentsrsquo Day and Link Graduation In addition several opportunities arose this year for students to exhibit their talents at other venues Linkrsquos African Dance ensemble performed and the choir sang at our annual gala A Taste of Newark in November at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center They also presented their dance repertoire at the Verona Womenrsquos Service League The Pingry School Lawrenceville School and Rutgers Preparatory School Linkrsquos student choir was featured in a CBSUNICEF Special which aired in December 2005 on local TV Channel 2 In June 2006 we were proud to host two art shows one for each grade at Link The shows included work that the students completed over the course of the school year under art teacher Keva Beruttirsquos tutelage The type of art exhibited was varied--oil paintings interpreting original works of art masks made of plaster split face design in multi media watercolors and collages in mixed media The eighth gradersrsquo art was displayed at our post Graduation reception Parents students trustees and other guests strolled through an art gallery created in the gym with exhibition panels donated by Shanahanrsquos Stationery and Office Equipment Inc The seventh gradersrsquo art was displayed in similar fashion during the year-end 7th Grade Awards Assembly

Giving Back to the Community Our students are grateful for the generosity of others that enables them to attend Link and learn very early the value we place on giving back to others While we instituted a service project for eighth grade graduation our students have shown openness and commitment to helping others beyond what is required of them During the 2005-2006 school year our seventh and eighth graders proudly participated in several service projects including loz ldquoShare A Storyrdquo at the Community Hills Early Learning Centermdashread stories to preschoolers loz Hurricane Katrina Reliefmdashcollected food to send to Louisiana loz New Community Elderly Homemdash visited and entertained seniors loz Hillside Community Food Bankmdashpacked food boxes and bags and stocked shelves loz Neighborhood Clean Up with the Newark Police Departmentmdashpicked up litter


Broadening Our Studentsrsquo HorizonsmdashPartnerships Link appreciates the many partnerships with individuals corporations and foundations that expose students to a world beyond the traditional classroom These programs provide opportunities for personal development and academic enrichment for our students Camp Agawam A summer-long traditional camp experience in Maine giving boys the opportunity to participate in land and water sports creative arts and field trips Due to the generosity of an anonymous donor and Camp Agawam three students from Link attended last summer including one Link alumnus who returned for his third summer

Camp Border Collie for Kids An interactive experience for inner city youth at Glen Highland Farm in upstate NY where students learn about dogs and nature in a structured environment

focusing on responsibility learning and play For two weeks nine Link students on full scholarship learned to tend to and train rescued border collies while bonding with them They also enjoyed nature hikes swimming and other camp activities

Career Day A day at Link during which all students learn about various careers from seventeen community volunteers including Link alumni The professions represented by this yearrsquos speakers included firefighting culinary arts education law music fashion design politics and banking At the close of the program students participated in a brief workshop on how to make introductions a skill necessary for any career Eat Smart + Get Fit = Be Healthy A program sponsored by the Junior League of Montclair-

Newark which focused on nutrition and fitness During a half day program students

learned how to calculate their BMI (body mass index) eat nutritiously read food labels prepare healthy snacks and perform a few simple exercises to help stay fit Fencing Program An opportunity to learn the art and skill of fencing on

Saturday mornings with Olympic Fencer and Coach Mr Peter Westbrook and his staff In addition to teaching how to fence the program explores the history of fencing and emotional preparedness in sports and its relevance in life Thanks to donor Mr Ed Reitz fifteen

boys and girls participated in this bi-weekly program Football Clinic A day clinic at the NY Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands hosted by Athletes in Action Inc Twenty five boys from Link progressed through eight stations learning many of the skills and techniques for playing football from members of the NY Giants as well as the Rutgers Scarlet Knights football teams Friday Boysrsquo Group A weekly program where twelve boys met with male mentors over lunch to discuss issues facing the students Volunteer mentors included Mr Ed Reitz Mr Gene Crocker Mr Jim Mirenda and Mr Cedric Ashley Ice Hockey A program to learn the rules and techniques of playing ice hockey courtesy of Ms Ellen Mahar and Ms Kathy Hugin


of NJ Goals Ahead a non- profit organization promoting ice hockey education among youth Once a week for six weeks 16 students participated in clinics on skills as well as sportsmanship leadership and teamwork Junior Golf Program A program made possible by PlaySmart Inc Chelsea Piers and Athletes in Action Inc designed to build personal character through golf and mentorship Fifteen boys participated for one day per week for five weeks with professional and college

athletes The program ended with a trip to a NJ golf course to use the skills they learned during the program The Island School An intensive week-long expedition to The Island School in Eleuthera The Bahamas to explore marine life discover a different

culture and experience life using systems developed by the school to sustain the environment Prior to

departure students prepared for the trip in a four session seminar program Ten students and two chaperones attended The Island School in the summer of 2005 funded by The Raskob Foundation Lacrosse Program A program introducing boys to the basic skills of the game and elements of sportsmanship Clinics for fifteen students were hosted by the Athletic Departments at Delbarton School and Morristown-Beard School Novartis Programs Two annual programs exposing students to the

sciences On Community Partnership Day Novartis employees visited Link to speak on various topics in science and pharmacology as well as to share some scientific demonstrations with students Thirty-four Linkers were invited to Novartisrsquo Hanover campus for ldquoTake Your Children To Workrdquo day where students shadowed professionals through their work day and learned more about careers in science Playwrightrsquos Theater of NJ Young Writerrsquos Program A quarter-long residency program staffed by the NJ Young Writerrsquos Program where 8th grade students discovered their voice through playwriting At the close of the quarter professional actors performed the student scripts in an all-school assembly Stock Club A year long after school program for students to learn about all aspects of the stock market Under the guidance of volunteer mentors Mr Rob Failla and Mr Norm Sanyour ten students studied the concept of the stock market and practiced ldquobuying and sellingrdquo stocks of companies they were

familiar with The year ended with a trip to Van der Moolen a Wall Street trading firm and the New York Stock Exchange Thursday Girlsrsquo Group A weekly program where twelve girls met with mentor Ms Gloria McDonald over lunch to discuss issues facing the students In the spring the girls were invited to Prudential Financial Inc for lunch and a program on etiquette presented by Ms Kim Osterhoudt of Prudential


Celebrating Our Studentsrsquo SuccessmdashHigh School Admissions

As a result of their hard work over the course of two years every student in the Link Class of 2006 received at least one acceptance to an outstanding day or boarding independent school a private high school or a magnet school In fact 97 received at least two such acceptances Graduating students also received over $1 million in scholarships enabling them to attend these prestigious schools

Location Link is located in the heart of the Central Ward of Newark NJ Grades and Enrollment Grades 7th and 8th Total 117 Female 52 Male 48 Black 95 Hispanic 5 Seventy per cent of Link families were classified as low income according to Essex County NJ section 8 guidelines Sixty eight per cent live in single parent households and eight per cent reside with grandparents andor guardians Admission Linkrsquos admission process is unique because the school aims to serve students with a broad range of academic abilities with a portion performing below a portion at and a portion above grade level at the time of admission Link primarily recruits in the Newark public schools with the goal of providing the opportunity to attend private school to those who otherwise would not have that option Selection is based on an application and interview process that is designed to determine each childrsquos desire and ability to succeed at Link Tuition The actual per pupil cost for the school year 2005-2006 was $15847 Because families cannot meet the costs incurred by Link to educate its students Link is grateful for the generous support of many donors Eighty-five percent of Linkrsquos operating budget depends on these outside contributions to the school Families
