Class of 2020: Denise Nelsen, Pat Krey

The focus of our monthly Session meeting is on overall direction and vision for the church as well as prayer for general and individual needs in our church family.

This year our session moved to online video conference meetings due to coronavirus fears but we anticipate returning to in person meetings once things return to normal. Much of our time this year was consumed with how best to deal with the pandemic with regards to building use and worship.

Session for the year ending 2020 consisted of Betty Gilbey, Pat Krey, Rich Mizer, class of 2019, Denise Nelsen and Pat Krey class of 2020, Mark Roubinek, class of 2021, and Jerry Trent and Rich Mizer class of 2022. Moderator of Session was Pastor Rob Spahr. Clerk of Session was Pat Krey.

Denise Nelsen finished her second term on Session and we thank her for her six years of service in this position. Pat Krey is looking forward to completing her term and will be stepping down as Clerk of Session, as well. We are extraordinarily grateful for her many years of servant leadership as Clerk. Her knowledge of the process and procedures for Session have been an invaluable resource as has her dedication to our church and the patient wisdom she brought to our team.

Brenda Kloeckl and Anne Pfahl are willing to serve as elders for three-year terms and we will be voting on them at the annual congregational meeting. Respectfully Submitted, Rob Spahr

    Pastor’s Report

Well, 2020 certainly didn’t turn out like anyone expected! We started the year looking forward to our 150th Anniversary Celebration in the fall but plans for that - and everything else - came to a screeching halt in late March when the pandemic and resulted in shutdowns and lockdowns. The ministry momentum we had been enjoying evaporated as all programming was cancelled and the building was closed. We ended up celebrating Easter virtually and in the weeks that followed went to online-only services.

The lockdown stretched into months. Finally, after much discussion and preparation, we resumed holding in-person worship services in late June. The services were abbreviated with no congregational singing permitted and masks mandated for attendees. Fellowship Time was not held and stringent sanitation protocols were enacted. The building continued to remain closed for any other purposes than Sunday morning worship for the remainder of the year.

In person worship continued through November when they were suspended again amid concerns about rising virus cases in the state. A Christmas Eve service was allowed with two times being offered for people to attend.

We were able to hold our annual All-church Birthday Party on March 8, but had to cancel the rest of our typical special events – Salad Luncheons, Easter Breakfast, Potlucks, Church Picnic, Pontoon Progressive Supper, Pie Sale, Worship at the Fair, Cookie Sale, etc.

Weekly attendance dropped from around 50 to around 30 after we reopened. Online service viewing proved impossible to calculate with any accuracy, but we estimate around 20 on average. Worship

Our worship services were forced to adapt this year, both to online services and then to in-person worship with restrictions regarding singing and service length. We initially tried to have a simulated livestream of our services but found that active participation during the livestream was minimal. Eventually we just

made the service available on demand through our YouTube channel with links on our website.

Incorporating worship into the online service also proved to be a huge challenge. We were able to upgrade our sound mixer board, computer, and presentation software at no cost to us thanks to a grant from our Presbytery, but still were not able to get consistent or acceptable quality recordings of our team for use online. The time required to record and produce these recordings was quite extensive, especially considering the end product. There were also copyright issues and questions about the overall effectiveness at engaging people in worship that caused us to discontinue attempts to record our own music at this time.

We ended the year with our Christmas Eve candlelight service. This year we offered two times for the service, 4:00 and 5:30 PM. Due to pandemic restrictions we had prerecorded music and ended the services with candles lit outside and a few short carols.

Jen Hansmann continued to faithfully serve as our pianist while also providing vocals and special music through the year. She is an invaluable member of our team and we are very grateful for her work with us. Thanks to Jen for bearing with us through the various challenges we faced this year.

Other vocalists on our worship team were Claire Blake, Christin Caza, Rob Spahr, with Rosalie Spahr and Caylin Muehlberg assisting as vocalists early in the year. Ken Southorn was a guest soloist. Todd McCormack and Adrienne Roubinek were substitute accompanists when Jen was absent.

    Sunday Messages

    Pastoral Functions

I only conducted two funerals this year. One was for community member Phillip Swanson in early March and the other for our own Jan McLearen, who had been a faithful member of our church for many years and passed away unexpectedly in July.

The amount of stress and depression brought on by the pandemic saw an increase in the amount of time I spent this year counseling individuals. I also ended up spending a lot of time during the year trying to adapt to online worship which required me to learn video production and editing.

I continued to stay involved at Pine City High School by substitute teaching when students were able to attend in person. This year I was also privileged to be able to serve as an assistant coach for the Cross Country Team. I also attend various sporting events, concerts, dramas, and other school activities whenever possible, especially those involving our youth group students. These activities are great opportunities to connect with students and families in our community. It also provides me insight into our students, schools, and needs we may be able to help address.

I have also continued to be active in our Pine City pastors’ monthly meetings as well as monthly pastors gathering from pastors around east central Minnesota.

Reflections and Areas for Future Growth

This has certainly proven to be the most challenging year I’ve experienced in my 35 years of vocational ministry. We’ve struggled with difficult decisions, changing ministry paradigms, and disgruntled members. We’ve all dealt with discouragement and depression.

And yet I remain hopeful that our congregation will be resilient and that this will turn out to be a time of refining and growth, both for individuals and our church as a whole.

I want to encourage everyone to continue to pray, serve, and give as we work to accomplish the mission God has entrusted to us: to help people meet Jesus and grow in their relationship to Him. Rejocing in Him! Rob Spahr

    Children’s Ministry Team

As in all areas of our church, 2020 proved to be a challenging year for our Sunday School program. Jewell Vermilyea, Karla Blake and Deb Ringer provided teaching the first part of 2020. Jewell has faithfully led our Children’s Ministry Team for many years but has decided to step down. We thank Jewell for her service and commitment to the children of our church.

Over the summer our KidZone area saw a deep clean, fresh paint and reorganizing. The art room, media room and classroom were ready to greet our students for the beginning of Sunday School in September.

Students have been in a single classroom format using curriculum from DWELL. Fall featured parables that taught lessons of God’s love and mercy. Starting in February they will be learning about Paul and his missionary journey. Our students helped with a video presentation of Luke 2 for our Christmas Eve service.

As we settle into a more normal schedule we will be working on our memorization of the books of the Bible and Scripture verses.

Plans are being made to offer Summer Sunday School in some format for this energetic, big-hearted group of children. Respectfully Submitted, Rosalie Spahr

    Fellowship & Hospitality Team

March 8, 2020: 35 adults and 14 children attended the All Church Birthday Party. The event was catered my Mylie’s Catering. It was the most attended Birthday Party since I have records of, starting in 2009. We were blessed to have such great attendance and that we got it in before the global pandemic hit.

The remainder of the year’s events were cancelled due to Covid and the need for the safety and well-being of our congregation. Of course it is unknown at this time what Fellowship events can take place in 2021.

Fellowship is such an important part of our church family and we will resume our fun events when it is safe to do so. Respectfully Submitted, Karla Blake

    Memorial Committee

The Memorial Committee members are: Butch Carlson, Sharon Rike and Earl Schuler who are honored to be custodians of all memorial money given to the First Presbyterian Church.

While we have not received any memorial gifts in three years we will always seek to honor the wishes of families who entrust this committee with memorials given in memory of their loved ones.

The committee team and the Session can make decisions as to how undesignated money will be used. Men’s Ministry

The men meet the second Thursday of each month at 8 AM for breakfast at Nicoll’s Café. Each man has his favorite breakfast. We have missed our discussions around the breakfast table.

After breakfast we return to the church and do some general cleaning and building repairs.

This group served at one funeral this past year.

Jerry Lindstrom has again done the lawn mowing of our west church lot. Thank you, Jerry.

Obi Paredez does the lawn trimming and mowing of our church yard. Obi also keeps our church sidewalks cleared of snow and ice. Thank you, Obi.

Stransky Construction also continues to clear our church parking lot of snow and ice. Thank you.

We invite all church men to our monthly meetings.

    Mission & Outreach Team

Our Mission and Outreach Ministry Team oversees the Faith Promise mission giving initiative and coordinates with the missionaries our church helps support. Our missionaries, Randy and Wanda Potratz, were able to visit with us this summer and give us an update on their ministry in Niger, Africa. Due to coronavirus and other health issues, they ended up stateside for most of 2020, but returned to Niger in early 2021.

The Faith Promise giving is designed to be separate and over-and-above a Christ-follower’s regular tithing commitment. The money received from Faith Promise goes exclusively toward mission endeavors.

With changing giving patterns during the pandemic and the loss of members who regularly supported missions through Faith Promise we ended the year with a negative balance of $1142. We have suspended payments until that fund is replenished. We are hopeful that we will be able to resume our regular support of the Potratz’s in 2021. Respectfully Submitted, Rob Spahr

    Presbyterian Women’s Group

Presbyterian Women are a group of ladies that get together 10 months out of the year to have coffee and a treat, a devotional time and a business meeting as to how to further help in our church and community.

But as you know this year has been different. We met once in March and have continued to send support to the church, Pine City Food Shelf and A Place for You. 2020 saw the cancellation of our Spring and Fall Salad Luncheons and our Cookie Sale which

    Student Ministries

Our Student Ministries worked to continue to reach out to 7th-12th grade students in our community and provide a place where these students have to opportunity to meet Jesus and grow in their walk with Him.

Our primary program to accomplish this is our weekly youth group meeting that takes place on Wednesday nights. Attendance before lockdown had been running between 12 and 18 students. We were able to hold a few broomball outreach events in January and February, and a couple of paintball events in the fall, but other special events were cancelled due to the coronavirus.

With the building unavailable for our weekly youth group, we moved our weekly gatherings to the Spahr’s home in the fall. Rosalie remodeled the pole shed into an inviting and cozy youth area, capable of accommodating all of our students and more. Attendance after we restarted group in the fall hovered around half a dozen, but those who were able to attend enjoyed some great times learning, playing, and hanging out. The welcoming environment facilitated a more intimate level of sharing and fellowship, making our group function like a small group rather than a large youth meeting.

In the spring we graduated our largest group of seniors to date. Graduates from our youth group were Josh Rike, Ethan Blatz, Malachi Ennen, Josh Lotz, Jaylun Kearns, and Grace Grubbs.

We are excited by what God is doing in the lives of our students and look forward to seeing him continue to work in great ways. Respectfully submitted, Rob Spahr

    Finance Team

Well, 2020, as we all know, has been quite a year. We started out doing so well heading towards our 150th celebration. As our goal to have our mortgage paid off was looking quite possible, hope dwindled quickly as Covid-19 appeared. The outlook turned into survival mode.

Here is a look at how we stand on the progress of paying our mortgage... we made two payments of $30,000 each in January 2020 bringing our principal balance down to $41,515.51. We have a deferred interest balance of $15,816.37. Our total payoff balance stands at $57,331.88. Our interest is accruing at $103.79 per month on our unpaid principal balance. We have been very blessed to have accomplished this!! Thanks so much to each and everyone who have given so graciously towards this goal!! It would be a goal if we could still make a payoff for our 151st celebration!

Most of our regular givers have continued to tithe even during the move to online services for which we are thankful. Throughout the year we have also been so blessed with many special gifts of giving that have helped with the day-to-day operation of the church. They have helped so much and have kept us current with our bills.

We were able to upgrade our church sound mixer, presentation computer and software thanks to a technology grant from our Presbytery. We also received a Covid CARES Act Nonprofit Relief grant of $3553 to assist with our regular operating expenses.

Another operation our congregation showed their love and support for our church was for our roof repair fund! We were able to repair our roof and fix some other areas that were in need of attention to keep from becoming larger problems later. Once again, thanks so much for extra giving for our special needs!

We made the decision to keep next year’s operating budget the same as this year’s, other than required changes to the pastor’s salary and the increased cost of health insurance of $205.10 per month. Between these two adjustments our monthly expenses will increase $492.29 or $5907.45 for the year.

Our Faith Promise mission fund is separate from our normal operating budget as gifts to

this fund are designed to be over-and-above regular tithes and offerings. As noted in the Mission and Outreach report, that fund ended the year with a negative $1142 balance.

In addition to concluding her term as an elder, Denise Nelsen will be stepping down as treasurer. We want to thank her for her many years of dedicated service to our church in that role! Joan Mizer has agreed to serve as treasurer and that will be voted on at our annual meeting.

Let's all pray for a better 2021! Let's pray in-person services will return to be the norm. We need our church family especially in times like these! Respectfully Submitted, Rich Mizer
