Isha Foundation, founded by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, is a

non-profit NGO headquartered at Coimbatore. For the last

three decades, Isha has been propagating the science of yoga

throughout the world with the objective of bringing about

holistic development that will allow individuals to realize their

true potential.

As a part of Isha’s social outreach programs, Isha Vidhya rural

schools have been started in villages (under the umbrella of

Isha Education, established in 2005) to provide high quality

school education to underprivileged rural children who cannot otherwise access or afford it.

Today, nine Isha Vidhya schools (eight in Tamil Nadu and one in Andhra Pradesh), are creating a

bright future for over 5,800 rural children - many of whom are first-generation school-goers. Full

scholarships funded by individual and corporate donors, cover tuition, notebooks and textbooks and

support 58% of the children while the rest pay a subsidized fee.

Isha Vidhya’s English-medium schools open the door for rural children to successfully pursue higher

studies and gainful employment. The holistic, activity-based approach nurtures children’s

development beyond just academics, ensuring that students realize their full potential and learn in a

joyful manner.

To make quality school education accessible and affordable to

underprivileged rural children.

• Take education beyond literacy and rudimentary skills

• Strive to make children fluent in English and adept in computer skills

• Actively promote education of girls

• Increase educational awareness in rural communities while

preserving their identity and culture

The real story of India today is a story of two Indias - the shining 20% of India which the rest of the

world sees and respects and the remaining 80% for whom the reality is very different.

A recent global student assessment placed India 73rd out of 74

assessed countries despite India fielding students only from two of its

top states in school education - Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh.

According to Annual Status of Education Report 2013, only 2% of rural

Tamil Nadu students in Std. 2 could read at the appropriate level and

even in Std. 8, 35% still can’t read beyond the Std. 2 level. Further, 63%

of students in Std. 8 can’t do subtraction and 61% can’t do division.

With access to quality education, youth in rural areas can be empowered to take care of their own

and the country’s development. Isha Vidhya hopes to create a cost effective model to provide rural

youth quality education through Isha Vidhya schools and take this experience to work with Govt. &

other private schools to enhance the quality of rural education in India.

When I travel through our villages and see the kids, they are so bright-eyed at the age of four or five but by the time they are fourteen or fifteen, the spark has gone; their eyes are lifeless.

Rural youth should not be stuck with situations where they cannot do anything more with their lives. Tamil Nadu has 9.7 million students in government schools but these are only numbers because the quality of education is suffering. Less than 20% of our graduates are employable. So these children neither have their parents’ skills nor can they read or do mathematics. This is one thing we have definitely changed through the Isha educational initiatives - our teachers have strived hard to raise the quality of education and at the same time, keep it as a joyful experience for the children.

Still, whatever we and a handful of other organizations are doing is only a small drop in the ocean so we are now adopting government schools and looking at how to improve their infrastructure and teaching methods, to upgrade the quality of education that is being delivered. We are adding four of our teachers per government school, and they will work to change the quality of the school from within. We are also using our Isha Vidhya schools as a training ground for government school teachers. We have taken this up as a pilot project, and it is producing phenomenal results. Isha Vidhya will be getting into this on a large scale in the coming years.

However, it is not in the hands of a single organization to do everything. We can inspire and facilitate, but we cannot take up everything because it is too large. The difference in human life cannot be measured only in numbers, but we do need to offer this possibility to as many children as possible. With the good will, respect and ability that Isha has earned, we need to open up channels with the government, corporate sector and with organizations like UNICEF, etc. I hope all of you will participate in whatever capacity you can, because this is something that can revolutionize rural India.

HIGHLIGHTS:• The first school started in 2006 at Coimbatore District. Today there are nine schools in Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Tuticorin & Nagarcoil Districts of Tamilnadu and Chittoor District in Andhra Pradesh, with 5820 children.• The Scholarship Program was launched in 2008 for 242 students. Today, over 3145 students benefit from this life-changing initiative.

• Kitchens were started in our schools in 2012. Nutritious noon-meals are provided at a highly subsidised rate of ` 5 per meal. The meal contains proteins and vegetables, and is prepared using salt fortified with 7 micronutrients.• In 2012, our eighth school, and the first outside Tamil Nadu, was started by the Apollo Hospital Foundation in Chittoor district.• In 2012, critical interventions in 26 Govt. Schools in Coimbatore, Dharmapuri and Salem districts were started to enhance quality of education in Govt.

schools with Isha Vidhya learnings. • Our ninth school, sponsored by Infosys Foundation, has started at Dharmapuri Dt., Tamil Nadu from the academic year 2013-14.• Govt school interventions increased from 33 schools in 2013-14 to 40 schools in 2014-15. Training of Govt. school teachers and large scale remedial programs were taken up.

EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE & REQUIRED ADDITIONS At present, each Isha Vidhya school has an Administrative block and between 30 and 34 classrooms including a library, Math lab, Science lab, Computer-Aided Learning lab, Audio-visual lab and two Digital Classrooms. When fully completed, each school will have 42 classrooms including the labs. 15 school

buses are augmented by hired vans for providing safe transport to the children and teachers on a break-even basis.

The schools still need 50 classrooms to be complete with 2 sections each from LKG to Std. 10 and 3 sections each for 11th & 12th. Once complete each school will have 1100 children. 8 more school buses and construction of compound walls around the perimeter of each school are the other major immediate infrastructure requirements. The requirement of funds for 2015-16 are summarised below:

It's been a little more than 4 years now since I have been immersed in Isha Vidhya and am truly grateful to Sadhguru for this opportunity to be a part of the transforming process impacting the children studying here. Academically, the children are getting access to some of the best facilities, methodologies and inputs and this is reflected in the independent 3rd party assessment of our children carried out by Educational Iniatives in 2012, wherein our children performed far better than Govt. school children as well as children from other private schools in rural areas. Since starting noon-meal kitchens in our schools two years ago, there has been a sharp drop in the proportion of children suffering from malnutrition or anemia from over 70% in 2011 to 25% in 2014. With continuation of the initiative, this is likely to drop to nil.

The scholarship program at Isha Vidhya ensures that we are able to reach even the poorest of families. The pedagogy is adapted to help children who can expect no parental help in academics. Digital and animated content, classroom educational aids, toys and Montessori materials are integrated into the curriculum to make learning both fun and effective. Parents have often shared how their children love coming to school and though they don’t seem to have much homework to do, they seem to be making good progress. The numerous prizes won by our children at the district, State and even South India level are testimony to this.

With a view to taking the learnings and capabilities built up at Isha Vidhya to more children, we are also carrying out interventions in Government schools. Since most rural children are still dependent on Govt. schools for their education, this initiative provides the badly needed support to enhance the quality of education that they get.

The high student-teacher ratio in Govt. schools affects the performance of the class and creates an inability to support slow learners. To counter this we are hiring and training additional teachers at our cost to fill the teaching gaps and provide special attention to slow learners. In addition, by introducing English language learning tools and methodologies followed at Isha Vidhya, sports, arts and crafts, health awareness, environmental awareness and other initiatives, the education is made more holistic and interesting for the child. With support of likeminded individuals and organizations we hope to expand these initiatives over the coming years. Our sincere thanks to the many companies, foundations and individuals who have shared this journey with us and made it happen for our children.

When they first enter school, a majority of the

children are likely to have some level of physical

and mental hurdles as a result of malnutrition and

lack of intellectual nurturing. Isha Vidhya schools

are affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Matriculation

Board. There is special emphasis to ensure that rote learning is

avoided and to foster a stress-free, child-friendly learning

environment. Non-formal methodologies, especially in the

formative years of kindergarten and primary school, are a

significant component of the teaching process. Isha Vidhya’s

pedagogy borrows several relevant, innovative education

practices from around the world.

To engage the child in the subject, textbook learning is augmented

with learning toys, visual aids, DVDs and CAL (Computer-Aided

Learning) labs. Given that English is a primary focus of Isha

Vidhya, we use several approaches to help the child become

comfortable with the language. The Karadi Path and Power

English are two programs from the Karadi Tales Company which

are specifically designed for children from non-English

environments. Classroom practices such as Journaling,

Storytelling and Show & Tell also encourage children to speak

English confidently. Children requiring extra assistance are a

special area of focus.

While the schools follow a continuous process of assessment

based on various set parameters, Isha Vidhya’s central academic

team administers a curriculum-neutral assessment of learning

outcomes in English, Mathematics, Science, and Tamil. The

objective of this assessment is not so much to test the child as it is

to gain an insight on the effectiveness of the teaching process.

Several other initiatives for the wellbeing of the child include health

and hygiene classes, creative development, seedling nursery

activity, games, sports, and yoga. This holistic, activity-based

approach nurtures children’s development beyond just academics,

ensuring that students realize their full potential and learn in a

joyful manner.

Since 2012, Isha Vidhya is also taking a major step in

bringing the Isha Vidhya learning and methodology into

government schools. 40 Govt. schools in Coimbatore,

Dharmapuri and Salem Districts have been adopted to

take up various initiatives aimed at improving quality of

education in these schools.

While the government has created school infrastructure,

we realize that Isha Vidhya’s experience can be utilized to

impact methodology and teaching environment in these

schools significantly through critical interventions in the

following key areas:

1. Hiring teachers to reduce the student-teacher ratio and

filling teacher gaps.

2. Hiring teachers for special teaching to slow-learners to

mainstream them,

3. Basic training to teachers in child friendly teaching meth-

ods to maintain discipline without physical punishment,

motivating children, lesson planning, access and use of

classroom educational aids and digital content, etc.

4. English language program introduction for all students to

teach the language effectively.

5. Infusing hitherto neglected aspects like sports, yoga,

arts and crafts, and health and hygiene

This is likely to result in several thousands of children

benefitting from the transformation that is achieved by a

meaningful education.

I had worked for many years as section head

and teacher at another school, but being in

Isha Vidhya is something very different. The

training they give us here has been very useful.

We find ourselves changing into students and

bubbling with energy and anticipation for the

activities conducted in the workshops. We’ve

adapted ourselves to the new methods, which

include not beating, punishing or using harsh

words with students, and I’ve seen remarkable

growth in the students because of this

approach. The children are very frank and

open because they have

no fear of the teachers

or the Principal.

They are taking up their

studies out of interest

and self-motivation

rather than fear, and

they are doing so well.

Shylakumari, Principal, Isha Vidhya,Kurandi, Nagercoil

If the testimony of a good school is that those

most closely associated with it enroll their own

children, then Isha Vidhya scores high.

Teachers, van drivers, administrators - those

who know the ins and outs of the Isha Vidhya

schools are the first to get their children's

applications in for enrollment.

A key step in Isha Vidhya’s methodology is to

provide ongoing training to the teachers.

Follow-up training and monitoring happens at

each school location throughout the year.

During the summer vacations, teachers from

across Tamil Nadu attend a centralized training

workshop, which provides a critical orientation

into the Isha Vidhya teaching methodology and

covers the basics in education - from how to

build a lesson plan to how to guide students in

activity-based learning.

With the Isha Vidhya methodology blending

technology, activity and learning, students find

schooling and learning an enjoyable

experience and look forward to coming to

school each day.

Abhinesh, Student in Villupuram School

Abinesh is a very active child studying in Grade Three in Isha Vidhya Matriculation School located in

Villupuram District. Ever since his father abandoned the family a few years ago, his mother works as

a maid at a school in order to support her family.

Abinesh’s elder brother is studying in Grade Five in Isha Vidhya Matriculation and his younger sister

Adeline, is in Upper KG. The three children stay with their maternal grandmother as their mother

stays closer to her work place which is quite far away and she visits them once or twice a month.

Initially, Abinesh was sullen and rude with classmates and teachers as his family situation affected

him badly. He was an average learner in the beginning. The teachers worked on his temperament

and he is now cheerful and friendly, while doing well in his studies as well. He is very talented in

drawing and colouring. He loves to speak in English and converses with his fellow mates in English.

All the three children enjoy having the noon meal provided in the school and this is their best meal of

the day.

Abinesh also loves travelling from home to school in the school bus. They never

miss a day of school. He has many friends and he says “I love all my teachers

and they are very kind to me.”

Their mother is deeply grateful for the opportunity her children are getting

thanks to the Full Educational Support provided by Isha Vidhya, which covers

their entire schooling expenses including tuition, books, note-books, noon

meals, transport and uniforms.
