My tenure as Chair of theBoard of Trustees has been atime of great excitement forthe museum — under BobFitzpatrick’s inspired leader-ship, the MCA has truly comeinto its own in this buildingover the past four years. I amdeeply grateful to my fellowboard members, to Bob, andto the entire MCA family oftrustees, supporters, members, and staff for being genuinepartners in accomplishing somany great things for themuseum, for the city ofChicago, and for our visitorsfrom all over the world.

In light of the bleak eco-nomic climate this year, weresponded by taking very pru-dent measures — most notablyby reducing our staff and bynot extending raises. By mak-ing these diªcult decisions, wewere able to focus on the coreof our mission, and to preservedirect benefits for our visitors.Throughout this trying time, our trustees, most notably rep-resented by Helen and SamZell, the Pritzker FamilyFoundation, the Harris FamilyFoundation, the Irving HarrisFoundation, Anne and KennethGriªn, Nancy and SandyKoltun, and Sylvie and RobertFitzpatrick, came forward withgifts that freed us from theneed to withdraw from theendowment. These gifts are atestament to their faith in theMCA, and to them I extend mydeepest thanks.

Sadly, this year we saidgoodbye to our good friendand trustee Pamela Alper, who,in her steadfast support of themuseum, represented the trulyremarkable commitment andpassion of our trustees and thewide group of MCA supporters. We are blessed beyond measureto be sustained by such a pas-sionate and loyal community.

We welcomed five newmembers this year to the boardof trustees — Michael Alper,Steven Fradkin, Anne Kaplan,Sandy Koltun, and BradSmith — all of whom bring gen-uine enthusiasm and dedica-tion. I also thank our trusteeswho chaired the year’s success-ful fundraisers: Barbara BluhmKaul and Don Kaul and Margieand Bill Staples chaired theMCA’s Evening of Fashion andArt gala, made possible byMarshall Field’s; MarleneBreslow-Blitstein and MarilynFields chaired Feast for theEyes; and Margot Greig, withCheryl Seder, chairedVernissage.

As my time as Board Chaircomes to an end, I welcomeHelen Zell as she assumes this challenging position. Helenhas a longstanding and passionate commitment tothe museum and I know she will fulfill her duties asChair with wisdom and élan. I look to the MCA’s futurewith great optimism andconfidence — we are blessedwith a large and eclectic family of supporters who

contribute in many ways asthey help the museum fulfillthe core of its mission: toengage a broad and diverseaudience, create a sense ofcommunity, and be a place forcontemplation, stimulation, and discussion about contem-porary art and culture.

The title of our fall exhibitionLife, Death, Love, Hate,Pleasure, Pain in many waysaptly summarized this pastyear. When our James W.Alsdorf Chief Curator, ElizabethSmith, organized this extraor-dinary exhibition and catalogueof works from the MCACollection, we had no idea howappropriate it would be for usin a year that was diªcult—pri-marily because of tighteningbudgets—but one that alsobrought together our staff, trustees, and volunteers tocontinue presenting outstand-ing exhibitions and program-ming without compromise tothe public.

One way that we haveworked to fulfill our mission tobuild a world-class collection isby acquiring important works from our own exhibitions.Andreas Gursky’s Avenue of the

Americas and Prada III wereboth added after the majorexhibition of the German pho-tographer’s visually stunning,large-scale photographs thissummer. The exhibition had atremendous reception fromvisitors and became one of themost highly attended shows inMCA history.

Matta in America: Paintingsand Drawings of the 1940s, animportant historical look at thework of this Chilean-born sur-realist who played a critical rolein bridging abstraction andfiguration, was followed by aprovocative exhibition of Britishartist Gillian Wearing’s videosand photographs, attractingmany curious visitors. We con-tinued our commitment toyoung and emerging Chicagoartists by renewing our popularmonthly series 12 x 12: NewArtists/New Work.

By winter, when our countryentered into war with Iraq, theexhibition War (What Is It GoodFor?) brought visitors eager tosee how artists have depictedvarious conflicts in the twenti-eth century. At the same time,Hiroshi Sugimoto: Architecture,in one of the most dramaticinstallations in the museum’shistory, provided a beautifulrespite with a series of monu-mental blurred photographs ofarchitectural landmarks.Manilow Senior CuratorFrancesco Bonami curated thisexhibition even as he began work as the director of theInternational Art Exhibition atthe Fiftieth Venice Biennale.

John Currin, a painter whohas been celebrated as one ofthe most important artists ofhis generation, debuted at theMCA in May in his first majormuseum exhibition. Organizedby the MCA in collaborationwith the Serpentine Gallery inLondon, this exhibition of stun-ning and provocative paintingsreceived wide critical acclaimand generated major excite-ment among visitors and pressalike both at the MCA and onits tour to the Serpentine andto the Whitney Museum ofAmerican Art in New York. PaulPfeiffer’s videos, photographs, and sculptures also took centerstage in our galleries, prompt-ing us to reconsider the impli-cations of ever-more-astonish-ing technological revolutions in visual representation. PaulPfeiffer was also on view at MITList Visual Arts Center and TheContemporary Museum inHonolulu.

In keeping with our commit-ment to collaboration, wejoined with the College ofArchitecture and the Arts at theUniversity of Illinois at Chicagoto present the first in a series ofcommissions for temporaryarchitectural works on the frontplaza: Garofalo Architects:Between the Museum and theCity. With fabric awnings, steelbeams, wooden platforms, andconcrete benches, this workextended the museum beyondits physical boundaries, trulyconnecting the museum to thecommunity. A popular spot forlounging and people-watching,the structure was also the sitefor educational programs andperformances.

In addition to world-classexhibitions, the museum’s edu-cation department, led byWendy Woon, Beatrice C.Mayer Education Director, pre-sented a range of engagingprograms. More than 200 chil-dren attended our popularsummer Arts Camp, a series ofweeklong programs includingdirect contact with local artists, while high school studentsbenefited from artist-led muse-um tours as part of the State ofthe Art program. We also pub-lished what has become anenormously popular familyguide to the MCA Collectionthat provides imaginative activ-ities for museum visits. Newand ongoing partnerships withlocal schools, community cen-ters, parks, and colleges anduniversities continue to expandour outreach to an ever-broad-ening young audience, whileour classes, tours, and lecturesoffer visitors real insight.

This year brought a world ofcontemporary performance tothe MCA Theater, promptingthe Chicago Sun-Times to praisethe MCA as “a haven for international performance.”Highlights of the season, whichwas curated by Peter Taub,Director of PerformancePrograms, included the Italiantheater company Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio’s daring ver-sion of Julius Caesar. For theculmination of a three-year long

Composer in Residence proj-ect, Ernest Khabeer Dawkinscomposed a work performedby his Live the Spirit youthjazz ensemble and MuntuDance Theatre of Chicago.Continuing a focus on collab-orations by leading interna-tional artists of our day, weco-commissioned a work byThe Builders Association andmoti roti, from New York andLondon; and coproduced anoutdoor dance-music projectby Amsterdam choreographerBeppie Blankert and LouisAndriessen. Among otherremarkable projects, the MCAhosted Chicago’s About FaceTheatre’s Festival of New Plays, which featured I Am My OwnWife, which has gone on togreat success on Broadway andwas awarded a Pulitzer Prize.

The rigor of our program-ming and its enthusiasticreception perhaps belies thefact that it has been one of themost diªcult years in recentmemory for many nonprofitorganizations. In the face of aharsh financial period, howev-er, our staff, notably JanetAlberti, Chief Financial Oªcer, and Greg Cameron, AssociateDirector and Chief DevelopmentOªcer, remained resolute intheir commitment, and thosewho support the MCA gener-ously came forward to revital-ize our contemporary cam-paign with a challenge grant.Led by Chair, Sally MeyersKovler, to whom heartfeltthanks for four years of leader-ship is due, our trustees have

shown unwavering dedicationto the museum, and it is withtheir guidance that the muse-um continues to flourish. Iextend to them my sincerethanks.

Lastly, I call your attentionto the many supporters listedelsewhere in this document—those of you who continue tosustain us, enabling us to pro-vide outstanding educationalprograms and bring the best incontemporary art and perform-ance to Chicago.
