To promote contact between and action by Africa members on matters related to

environmental health, to strengthen epidemiological research and capacity

development in environmental health and to improve public health outcomes in

Mentors and Partners Wanted

ISEE Africa Chapter is seeking experienced Mentors and Partners that are

interested in promoting environmental epidemiology research in Africa. Please let

us know how you can help

ISEE Africa Chapter 2020 Achievement (1/2)

1. Had many firsts for the chapter and exponential growth

in active ISEE membership from 10 in August 2019 to

about 100 as at July 2020

2. Held 1st chapter event on African soil. The CAPE and

chapter sponsored short course on environmental

epidemiology and exposure assessment in collaboration

with the University of Ibadan, Nigeria attracted over 500

applications from 15 African countries and 59

participants from Nigeria, Uganda and Guinea.

3. Held side meeting at the Planetary Health Conference in

The Gambia, with 43 participants and panel discussion

on how to promote regional research collaboration and

capacity development

4. Updated database of environmental health and allied

institutions in Africa. Sent letters to introduce the chapter

and seek for new members to 242 institutions in 11

countries (Nigeria, Uganda, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya,

Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Gambia,

Sudan, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea)

5. Facilitated reduction of annual ISEE membership fees

for LMIC to US$30.

6. Held 1st webinar in the chapter, with 50 participants. The second webinar series attracted 266

people (though only 100 could participate due to limitation of Zoom account)

11. Appointed and held induction for national coordinators. Onboarded new joiners to the chapter via

letter from the chapter chair

12. Held successful selection of two ex-officio positions and ongoing election to fill two councillor

positions in the chapter council. ·

2021 Priorities/Workplan1. Chapter Operations/Administration

a) Meetings: Hold bimonthly Africa Executive Council and quarterly chapter call

b) Reporting: Issue quarterly chapter news to members and submit quarterly report to ISEE

2. Revise chapter bylaws to reflect improvement Ideas and hold elections for expiring

3. Active participation in ISEE and ISEE 2021 conference

a) Get chapter members and African researchers to be more active in ISEE committees/events

b) Sponsor 2 - 3 symposia at 1SEE 2021 and organize chapter activities for ISEE 2021

4. Capacity Building and Education Workstream

a) Organize two webinar series on ‘’Research Funding opportunities for Africa’’ or other topic of interests to

members

5. Regional Membership Recruitment Workstream

a) Get volunteers from more African countries to be National coordinators and to compile list of

environmental health institutions in their countries

b) Introduce the chapter to more Environment/public health related institutions in additional countries in

Africa (at least all countries where there are active members e.g South Africa, Mauritius, Senegal, Benin

Republic, Algeria)

c) Intensify in-country membership recruitment from Masters and PhD students. Develop framework and

hold one in-country meeting of ISEE members (where there is critical mass, face-to-face if practicable)
