A SPECIAL MESSAGE

Welcome to the Shiloh Community Restoration Foundation 11th Annual Legacy Gala!

We truly appreciate your continued support and commitment to preserve and share the

story of the Shiloh Rosenwald School so that this important chapter of American history

will never be forgotten. During the past year, the Board has focused on preserving the

School as a museum and preserving the rich history of the School and the Community.

We have begun to capture oral histories from alumni, residents and others.

On August 12, 2016 the first permanent exhibits, developed in partnership with Middle

Tennessee State University Center for Historic Preservation, were unveiled at the Shiloh

Rosenwald School. The new permanent exhibits tell the inspiring story of quality

educational opportunities for African Americans in Macon County from 1922 when the

school first opened until 1964 when court ordered segregation led to its closure. The

exhibits capture the history of the School and the Shiloh community, especially the value

of education, the diverse partnerships and the significance and tragedy of the U.S. Public

Health Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male.

The Shiloh Rosenwald School is becoming an important destination for visitors from

around the country and internationally. Visitors, especially students are amazed to learn

that students had such a strong desire to be educated even with two or more grades

in the same classroom and very few amenities. For most visitors, seeing the School, the

outhouses and the water well is an unforgettable experience.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for joining us on the journey of

“Remembering Our Past, Celebrating the Present and Preparing for the Future.” The

Shiloh Community, through self-determination and commitment, charted its own course

and created opportunities through education. Thank you for joining us today and your

ongoing support of the Foundation.

Felecia Chandler

Chairman of the Board

SHILOH COMMUNITY RESTORATION FOUNDATION 11TH ANNUAL GALA

THE HISTORY

The story of the Shiloh Rosenwald School located in Notasulga, Alabama is one of a community charting its own course and creating opportunities through education. It is a story of self-determination, commitment and community representing American values

at their best. It is also a place of sadness and tragedy representing one of the worse moments in our history. The School is now a Museum with permanent exhibits – a place that you can visit to touch and feel the best and worst of mankind and a determined perseverance through it all.

The Shiloh Rosenwald School building is the only historic Rosenwald school left standing at its original location in Macon County, Alabama, the county where the entire Rosenwald Program began. The Rosenwald School program began as a partnership between educator Booker T. Washington, President of Tuskegee Institute and Julius Rosenwald, CEO of Sears and Roebuck. As one of the of the communities that supported the program from its infancy, Shiloh has long been recognized as an important place in the program’s history. Julius Rosenwald and his wife even visited the school and the adjacent Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church to thank the community for its support, sponsorship and commitment.

The Shiloh Rosenwald School was built in 1922 and operated until December, 1964. In 2002, the National Trust for Historic Preservation placed the Rosenwald Schools on its national Most Endangered List. In 2006, the Shiloh School was identified as a Rosenwald School for long-term preservation as a historic site. Shiloh is a place to visit to see where history took place. The Shiloh Community is unique – one place with three historic sites and nearby is Moton Airfield, home of the Tuskegee Airmen. The Shiloh Rosenwald School, the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and the Shiloh Cemetery are listed in the National Register of Historic Places and in the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.

The School originally had two classrooms separated by a folding door and a small vocational room that later became a classroom. The school had no electricity and no indoor plumbing. Pot belly stoves provided heat and outdoor privies were the only toilet facilities. The Shiloh Rosenwald School and the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church were impacted by the forty-year U.S. Public Health Service Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male in Macon County (1932-1972). The Church served as a gathering place for the men involved in the study and the African-American nurse for Macon County and the Shiloh Rosenwald School was recruited by the U.S. government as a coordinator for the Syphilis Study.

Today, many of the Rosenwald schools are gone, lost to changing times and communities.

The restoration and preservation efforts began with the self-determination and commitment of three remarkable women, Deborah Gray, Shirley Johnson and the late Elizabeth “Liz” Sims. Each played a pivotal role with Deborah assisting with the official identification of Shiloh as a Rosenwald School; Shirley leading the effort to obtain approval from the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church to appoint a Project Team and Liz accepting the role as the Project Team Leader. Liz formed and led a diverse team of volunteers that included school alumni; church members, descendants of participants in the syphilis study, university partners, community leaders, local and state office holders. The Shiloh Community Restoration Foundation was established in October, 2006 as a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization. Liz served as the First President of the Foundation until her untimely death on November 6, 2010.

Lessons from the past will continue to be documented and become learning experiences for visitors from around the world. Ongoing support from individuals throughout the United States has enabled the Foundation to restore and preserve the school as a historic site and community heritage center for the present and future.

We appreciate your ongoing support. The work must continue forever.

The Center of Historic Preservation at Middle Tennessee State University is one of the first eight centers of excellence established in the Tennessee higher education system. Created in 1984 the Center is dedicated to training the next generation of historic preservation

and public history professionals to be leaders in scholarship, community engagement, and public service. We believe in reciprocal partnerships between faculty, students and citizens to design, develop and carry out projects, large and small, that empower communities to use their pasts to shape their futures. We were honored when Liz Sims, Edie Powell, and Shirley Johnson in 2007 asked us to help the Project Team preserve and present the story of the Shiloh community to Alabama and the nation. We remained privileged and humbled that the Shiloh Community Restoration Foundation has presented us with this very gracious acknowledgment and award. We look forward to future projects and your continued success.
