  • the allied arts CounCil of st. Joseph, Missouri ex-ists “to bring arts and people together.” Founded in 1963, the Council is one of the oldest in the State of Missouri and is acknowledged statewide as an arts leader. In 1990, the City of St. Joseph designated the Allied Arts Council as the City’s official community arts agency. Operating with a staff of four and a volunteer base approaching 2,000, the Council takes the lead in our community in organizing, fund-raising, advocating, educating, and servicing the lo-cal arts community.

Organizational membership in the Council is open to non-profit agencies who provide arts related activities. Current-ly sixteen arts and cultural agencies are members. As an umbrella agency, the Council assists with scheduling, funding, and marketing for all member agencies. TheCouncil is also working with the City of St. Joseph to in-crease marketing for the major performing arts center inthe city, the Missouri Theater.

    About the Allied Arts Council...

    2

    A chat with your President...

Greetings to all of the art lovers in St. Joseph and the surround-ing area. This is the last time I will have the opportunity to visit with you as president of the Allied Arts Council Board. My position expires at the July Board Meeting and I will pass the gavel to a very capable Alison Schieber, who will be an excellent Board Presi-dent.

The local arts organizations have continued to bring educational opportunities to the community through various forms of art. This is one of the things that makes St. Joseph unique. The arts help make us comfortable with our-selves in the community and to appreciate our diverse cultural heritage.

We are in the process of finish-ing the Arts Fund Drive. Byron Myers has done an excellent job heading up the drive as he did last year. I am optimistic that we will reach our goal this year. How-ever if you have not sent in your donation it is NOT TOO LATE! The office will always accept your dollars. You know it is for a good cause.

Scott Johnson and his steering committee have planned a won-derful Trails West!® Festival Au-gust 20-22. You can look forward to great entertainment, food and a good time as they celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Pony

Express. Mark your calendar and plan on attending.

It has been a good experience working in the arts arena. We are indeed fortunate to have the Al-lied Arts Council to spearhead the educational programs, exhibits, youth art and many other activi-ties promoting art in our commu-nity. I want to thank the staff for all the help given to me during my tenure.

Teresa Fankhauser has a pas-sion for the arts and works con-stantly to provide guidance and direction for the Council. Cathy Ketter, Tammy Santos and Rog-er Singleton do the work of six people to get it all done. They do get it done! It is amazing! Give them all a big thank you the next time you meet them. Remember the Council Board is committed to advancing the arts in St Joseph….But we need all of your help.

See you around in the Arts,Rich Crumley

and a special gallery where children can display their art creations. It simply wouldn’t be Trails West!® without a tempting assortment of festival food like barbeque, funnel cakes, ice cream, kettle corn, pizza, roasted nuts, Greek cuisine, and old fashioned root beer, among many others.

“I’ve often wondered what attracts so many people to Trails West!®, and I think it boils down to diversity. The festival has such a diversity of entertainment, art, music and food. Every age group has something they can see and do for three days,” says Scott Johnson, Chair of the Trails West!® Steering Committee.

Admission to the festival is by sou-

venir button or 2010 Trails West! ® t-shirt. The buttons, good for admis-sion to all three days of the festival, will be $6 in advance and $8 at the festival gates. All festival guests over the age of 12 will need a button or t-shirt for admission. Trails West! ® 2010 t-shirts must be purchased in advance and can be worn to the fes-tival as an alternative option to pur-chasing an admission button. Trails West!® is an arts festival, cel-ebrating the unique cultural heritage of St. Joseph. A program of the Al-lied Arts Council, the festival is co-ordinated by a volunteer steering committee, and receives financial assistance from the St. Joseph Con-vention and Visitors Bureau, the City of St. Joseph, and the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.

Alison Schieber moved here 10 years ago with her family from the Kansas City area. Coming from a family who always stressed the importance of the arts, and from a grandmother who studied and performed opera in Italy, she was thrilled to find a new community that expressed her same feelings.

    Annual Festival continued...

of arts organizations, activities and events.

“It was reported in the St. Joseph News-Press that in a recent commu-nity survey, seventy-eight percent of residents thought that arts and cul-ture were important to St. Joseph. The arts are definitely thriving in St. Joseph. There are talented organi-zations that bring us performances, generous and dedicated volunteers who help to bring about the arts and the audiences and participants who enjoy the arts. Even while the arts are going strong, Allied Arts is tak-ing steps and developing programs to reach those under served by arts programs. The arts have an impact on the economic, social and learning aspects in the city which I want to see expanded,” Alison said.

Her three children are thriving in the St. Joseph arts community as well, and all of her children play musical instruments. She feels this gives her the perfect chance to spend time with her children.

“Taking them to a local performance is a great shared experience. It is great to see all the arts programs that are available to children and adults in St. Joseph,” she said.

Incoming AAC President expresses passion for local arts

She quickly found herself involved with the Allied Arts Coun-cil Arts Fund Drive and af-ter being on the Board of Directors for 4 years, she was recently asked to take

over as Allied Arts Council President.

“The arts are important to me, my family and the community because the arts enrich our lives. Art gives us beauty. Art expresses meaningful ideas,” Alison said.

Arts have always been a part of her life, and having lived in several larger artistic communities, she was pleas-antly surprised that St. Joseph sus-tained such an amazing collection

“Without the help of our volunteers the Arts Fund

    to support the arts.”

According to Executive Director Teresa Fankhauser every contribution regard-less of size is needed to
