PRESIDENTS MESSAGEDear Members of Southern California Germans from Russia!

I hope you’re enjoying the Fall weather and soon Thanksgiving Day will be here. For many of us it’s the time of year when we get together with our extended family and thank God for the many blessings we enjoy living in America! I hope that you will have a good Thanksgiving!

Marge Benson’s presentation at our September meeting was informative and demonstrated the features of SOAR and how it could be used to search for ancestral information. It’s a large database that continues to grow and if you haven’t utilized this resource, I would encourage you to do so.

In September, Al Hart and I participated in the meeting of the California District Council. It was good to visit with representatives of other chapters and to plan future events. Among them is the Heritage Fest that will be held in Lodi on Saturday, April 28, 2012. If you haven’t attended a Heritage Fest, I’m sure you would enjoy it—so plan to attend!

This year AHSGR is making a special effort to recruit new members. You will see information about that in this newsletter. I would urge you to invite a friend to join our chapter and participate in Chapter events. If each of us would invite and encourage one other person to join us, the membership of our chapter would flourish. So, accept the challenge! If you haven’t renewed your membership for the coming year, please do so now.

Our Christmas luncheon will be held on December 3 at Marwick Place, Monte Vista Grove in Pasadena, a place that we have enjoyed for our recent Christmas luncheons. This year we will be entertained with a special musical presentation by a lively and talented family of instrumentalists, the McIntire family. These young people are skilled musicians and will be playing/singing Christmas music and will invite us to join them in singing some Christmas carols. You won’t want to miss this so submit your reservation on the form included in this newsletter.

All of you are aware that recently we were presented with a lovely painting by artist and chapter member, Ella Curtis.(see photo) As a fund-raiser, we will be selling the painting to the highest bidder. This lovely painting would be a wonderful Christmas gift for someone to receive. We have a starting bid of $200 and welcome your bid. Please send your bid to me at: [email protected] We will close bidding at the December 3 Christmas luncheon.

I look forward to seeing you at our Christmas luncheon!

Sincerely,

David J. Karber, President

BOOK REVIEWAHSGR has just published a book that has been translated from German into English on the German colonies in the Black Sea region. Many thanks go to Tim Geiger who initiated and supported the efforts to translate this book and bring it to publication. It is highly recommended reading for those interested in the history of the German colonies in the Russian Empire, and while its locale is in the Black Sea region, it has relevancy for those whose ancestors settled in the Russian Empire regardless of the area in which they lived. Book Review: Origin, Development, and Dissolution of the German Colonies on the Black Sea via the Example of Kandel from 1808 until 1944 by Anton Bosch and Josef Lingor

Reviewer: Jerome Siebert

This book traces the history of the people and villages established by German colonists in the Black Sea area beginning in the early 1800s until 1944 using the village of Kandel and neighboring villages as examples. It is an attempt to provide insights into all aspects of economic, religious, and cultural life from the immigration into the area through the highs and lows of World War I, the Civil War, and Stalin’s persecution during and after World War II. It describes various events and achievements focusing on people in Kandel and emphasizing people who were instilled with an undaunted pioneering spirit, and who were diligent, hardworking, and deeply rooted in the language and culture of the old homeland of Germany. From the colonies’ origins to the height of their development, and then to eventual decline and dissolution through events that changed the political and economic landscape and environment, the book details the impacts on the lives of the colonists and provides insight into their unyielding spirit and quest to succeed and overcome adversity. However, in the end, the village ceased to exist with their inhabitants dispersed in many parts of Siberia, Kazakhstan, Central Asia, East and West Germany, the United States, and Canada. However, the achievements they accomplished while colonists in Russia in order to assist it in becoming a huge empire and make it possible to achieve the status of a world power, are both notable as a tribute to their energy, and hard work. Whether someone has roots in the Black Sea area or is interested in German-Russian history, the book will provide interesting insights.

The Green ThingSubmitted by Betty Campbell of the New Mexico Chapter Newsletter - Velma Jesser, Editor

In the line at the store, the cashier told an older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. The woman apologized to him and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day."The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment." He was right–our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day. Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts–wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day.Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house–not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then.Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint. But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?
