ANNIVERSARY.

T he Twentieth Anniversary of the American Seamen’s Friend Society was celebrated in the Broadway Tabernacle, New York, on Monday evening. May 8,1848.

Captain Edward Richardson presided on the occasion. After the singing o f an original hymn by the immense congregation, the Rev. Dr. Ferris led in a prayer of grateful acknowledgement and earnest supplication. An abstract of the annual report was then presented by Rev. J. Spaulding, one o f the secretaries; and the meet- iug was addressed by the Rev. H. Chase, of New York, John Thompson, Esq., of Po’keepaie, Rev. C. Forbes, late missionary and chaplain to seamen at the Sandwich Islands, and the Rev. Dr. Bethune, Philadelphia. Mr. Chase gave a historical sketch of the origin and progress of the efforts for the social and spiritual improvement of seamen, and closed with a graphic contrast of the past and present aspects o f this cause. Mr. Thompson made an eloquent plea in behalf of what he called one of the noblest enterprizes of the present age; showing how, like an angel of mercy, it leaves the city and the country, and goes over the sounding sea on its errand of love. Mr. F o r b e s spoke feelingly of its bearing on the cause of missions, and related several anecdotes illustrating the importance of a vigorous prosecution of this work. Dr. Bethune, with much point and power, urged the importance of such a baptism and consecration of mercantile enterprise as to make it missionary in its influence throughout the world; so that every ship should have several missionaries, every where illustrating and enforcing the teachings of the Gospel, instead of as formerly contradicting and opposing its claims.

A deep interest pervaded the whole meeting. It was one of those sunny elevations in life’s journey and toils where one loves to stop, run the eye over the way travelled, and look joyfully into the brightening future.

A collection was taken amounting to $165 82, a doxology was sung, and the benediction pronounced by the Rev. Dr. Hutton, of New York.

Agreeably to previous notice, the Society was then called to order, and Trustees were elected for the ensuing year.

TWENTIETH ANNUAL REPORT

OF THE

AMERICAN SEAMEN’S FRIEND SOCIETY,P R E S E N T E D M A Y 8 , 1 8 4 8 .

J u s t before the lamented death o f Dr. Morrison, in China, he thus wrote to a friend in A m erica :

“ I beseech you, i f you have influence among the opulent Christians in America, to consider the practicability o f a Bible ship to navigate the shores o f Eastern Asia. I f science, and discovery, and luxury, and com merce have their ships, w hy should it be thought strange that the Christian should also have his ships to convey to man the written mandate o f his Maker— the message o f mercy from the Saviour o f the world ?”

American Christians have considered this matter; and the result is a deep conviction, not only o f the practicability and importance o f a Bible ship, but o f an immense Bible fleet, navigated by Bible men, and freighted with the messages o f mercy to all the shores o f the globe. Nothing .short o f this will fulfil the “ sure w ord o f p r o p h e c y b r in g the sons o f Zion with their consecrated treasures from afar, and brighten the glories o f millennial day. Indeed this conviction has become a settled principle o f faith, inscribing “ Holiness unto the Lord ” on the bows o f the ships, as well as on the bells o f the horses, and making a sanctified commerce greatly instrumental in the conversion o f the world to God. It is not then a mere matter o f form with the Directors o f the American Seamen’ s Friend Society, in presenting the Twentieth Annual Report, to express their sense o f the magnitude and far-reaching influence o f their work, and to record their acknowledgments to Him who crowneth the year with his goodness. Praised be his name, that they have been enabled to do more towards furnishing seamen with a preached Gospel during the last twelve months, than they ventured to attempt during the last six years.

Seven additional chaplains have been commissioned within the year for the foreign field.

F ore ign O perations.CANTON, CHINA.

One o f these chaplains, the Rev. George Loom is, is stationed in the principal port o f the Celestial Empire. Judging from the character and qualifications o f the man, and from the favorable circumstances under

Page 7: ANNUAL REPORT.imageserver.library.yale.edu/digcoll:297051/500.pdf · I give and bequeath to T he American Seamen’s Friend Society, incorporated by the Legislature of New York, in

other nations 1214; total 2114. In the latter port in a single year, Am erican vessels, 439; British, 114; from other nations, 839; total, 1392. Other ports o f considerable importance are conveniently accessible from these ; and a chaplain, the Rev. J. M. Pease, has been commissioned to explore and report, with a view to future operations there.

MARSEILLES, FRANCE.

W hatever may be the results o f the recent revolution in the land o f the vine, certain it is, that the present is a most propitious time for the introduction o f a pure Christianity. The popular mind, panting for civil and religious liberty, is yielding the homage o f respect to the great Deliverer o f man ; and the popular heart is open for the reception o f those truths ■which make men the freemen o f the Lord.

Com merce has cut the channels through which a pure Christianity may ■ flow. Hence the establishment o f seamen’s chaplaincies in the principal ports o f that R epublic; to act first upon the seamen, and then upon a people sick at heart with a formal religion, and solicitous for the Gospel.

The number o f American seamen annually in the port o f Marseilles is not la rg e ; yet large enough to justify the sustaining o f the Am erican Bethel Flag there at small expense. Says the Rev. George H. Hastings, chaplain, commissioned by the Foreign Evangelical and the Am erican Seamen’s Friend Societies, and who sailed from New Y ork on this mission on the 9th o f October last, “ J find many who speak English, and taking all o f this class who com e from America, England, Sweden and Denmark, there is full demand for the entire labors o f an English or Am erican chaplain. I f the Am erican Society feels justified in extending missionary labor to foreign seamen, it may be well assured, that in this port o f Marseilles there is a noble field, which none can occupy so peaceably as an Am erican.”

A month later, February 22, Mr. Hastings again writes, “ There is really a noble field here and states the number o f British and American vessels there in 1847, to have been 296, navigated by 2962 men. The frigate United States was then in port, on the eve o f starting on a cruise along the coast o f Italy. Her chaplain having left her o ff the coast o f Africa, Mr. Hastings was welcom ed on board by the commodore to labor a few weeks among his 400 men. Having perform ed this service, he would return to his post in the city w hich Cicero called “ the Athens o f Gaul.”

BORDEAUX, FRANCE.

Under the auspices o f the Protestant Society o f France, the Rev. T . L . Schiep labors as chaplain among the 4000 Protestant seamen annually in this port. This evangelical Moravian minister is indefatigable in his labors on ship-board, in the hospital and prison, as well as in preaching Christin three or four different languages in his chapel. The northern countries o f Europe, including Russia, send their annual contributions to Bordeaux, to sustain him in his labors for the benefit o f seamen. The amount o f these contributions being insufficient— only 2500 francs— his appeal to the American Seamen’s Friend Society for aid has been answered by a small appropriation. Under the circumstances o f the case, the Board felt constrained to do something, and only regretted its inability to do more.

TWENTIETH ANNUAL REPORT. 9

HAVRE, FRANCE.

At the date o f the last Annual Report, the Rev. E. E . Adams, chaplain, was on a visit in the United States. On the 7th o f March last, he thus writes from Havre : “ During the six months o f my ministry, since my return, w e have had on the whole more encouragement than formerly, so far as attendance on the word in the chapel, and resort to the reading room are concerned. W e have had several cases o f inquiry among sailors, but their stay has been so short, that we could not judge o f the permanency o f their impressions.”

W hat effect the solving o f the Republican problem may have on the usefulness o f our chaplain in this field, remains to be seen. W e confidently expect the happiest results.

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN.

O loff Peterson having been employed in the service o f the British and Foreign Bible Society, A . M. Ljungberg has taken his place as our Sailor Missionary in the port o f Stockholm. His quarterly reports published in the Sailor’s Magazine, show the fidelity and success o f this faithful sailor missionary, in bringing his shipmates into the desired haven.

GOTTENBURG, SWEDEN.

So also do the reports o f the Sailor Missionary, F. O. Nelson. Many will forever bless God for the instrumentality o f this fervent and faithful Swedish apostle. W e cannot speak o f his signal success better, than by quoting his own modest and heartfelt language : “ Glory be to God. Heean with a little spark kindle a great fire ! T o him be all the glory. Am en.”

RIO DE JANEIRO,

W here annually are found some 10,000 seamen, and other important foreign ports, are now being surveyed by the Board, with a view to the establishment o f chaplaincies, wherever the good o f seamen and the ad* vancement o f the Redeemer’s kingdom shall demand them.

D om estic O perations.

But while the Society has thus been engaged abroad, it has not forgot* ten the direction o f the Master to his Apostles to begin at Jerusalem. At home, in connection and co-operation with numerous auxiliary and local Societies, it has sought the social and spiritual good o f the men o f the sea. Its Secretaries have spent considerable time in raising funds and otherwise, for the support o f local institutions for the benefit o f seamen. Hence, as well as for the sake o f a summary view o f what is done in this department along the seaboard, the following sketch is presented.

Page 9: ANNUAL REPORT.imageserver.library.yale.edu/digcoll:297051/500.pdf · I give and bequeath to T he American Seamen’s Friend Society, incorporated by the Legislature of New York, in

1 0 TWENTIETH ANNUAL REPORT.

PORTLAND.

The Sailor’s Home in this city, kept by Mr. George H. W ilson, like the noiseless stream in the meadow, continues to develop its life-giving results. A Seamen’s Chapel is in process o f completion. It gives us sincere pleasure to record a growing interest in the spiritual welfare o f seamen in M aine; a state which furnishes more men for the sea, than any other in the Union.

BOSTON.

W e know o f no abatement o f any o f the efforts for the good o f seamen m the city o f the Pilgrims. But we have occasion to know, that while some o f the churches have greatly increased, others have more than doubled their donations to the Seamen’s cause. The preachers in the mariners’ churches speak encouragingly o f their respective fields o f labor. One o f them, the son o f a sea captain, and brother o f a sea captain, in a letter recently received says, “ I am delighted with the sublime w ork o f preaching the glorious gospel o f the blessed God to men whose ears are not dull o f hearing. A number o f them have found peace in Jesus. The glorious cause o f temperance is prospering among seamen. I have a pledge nearly forty feet lo n g ! W hen seamen become temperate men they are then capable o f receiving the glad news o f salvation with all readiness o f mind.

“ W e have formed a new Society for Seamen, called ‘ The Anti-Swearing Society.’ The following is the pledge : The members o f this Society do solemnly promise and agree, that their motto shall be, P u r e l a n g u a g e f o r e v e r : that they will not swear, nor make use o f profane language, or any vile com m unications; but will faithfully reprove, entreat and persuade all with whom they meet, and have opportunity, to break o f f from this Heaven-provoking, most degrading and criminal practice.

“ A sea captain was the first to put his name to the pledge, and a num ber o f seamen have followed his worthy example.”

T he “ Mariner’s House,” under the charge o f Mr. Nathan Howes, and the Sailor’s Home, under the superintendence o f Mr. John O. Chany, take the lead in Boston, not only in elevating seamen, but in improving other sailor boarding houses. The Home had the first year, ending Nov. 1st, 1846, 1300 sailor boarders; the 2d year, 2,380, and, the number for the 3d year promises to be about 2,500. Says the superintendent, “ very many o f my steadiest men now, when they first came to board with me, were very intemperate. I cannot tell o f many truly converted , but ten or twelve men have been here the last year, w ho, I have every reason to believe, have given their hearts to God. And many have gone from us during the year, whom I believe to be earnestly inquiring 4 what must w e do to be saved ?’ T w o have sailed to-day, fine fellows in every respect, w ho have just decided on the Lord’s side.” The Boston Seamen’s Friend Society is efficiently co-operative as a Branch with the Parent Society in its great work. T he Rev. William Bushnell, the secretary and representative o f both in Massachusetts, continues to labor in that field with increased acceptance and success.

NEW YORK.

W ith the increase o f the shipping and commercial business in New Y ork, there should be a corresponding increase o f the means for the

Page 10: ANNUAL REPORT.imageserver.library.yale.edu/digcoll:297051/500.pdf · I give and bequeath to T he American Seamen’s Friend Society, incorporated by the Legislature of New York, in

TWENTIETH ANNUA I. REPORT. 11

benefit o f seamen. The number o f arrivals o f vessels from foreign ports for the year ending Jan. 1st, 1848, was 3,117, belonging to 31 different nations. This number is 854 greater than in any previous year. The number o f coastwise arrivals during the same time was 4,864; or 1,559 more than during the preceding year. E igh t thousand and eleven arrivals in the port o f New Y ork in a single y ear! making an average o f more than twenty vessels each d a y ! and bringing to this city thousands o f seamen to be cursed or blessed by the influences which surround them. And what is done to save them from death ? W e have six mariners’ churches, increasingly attended by seamen, where the Gospel is faithfully preached. Bible and tract distributors go along the wharves and on board the vessels on their errands o f mercy. "Various meetings for social and moral improvement are held almost every evening in the week. In some o f the recent built vessels the forecastle is arranged for the health and com fort o f the sailor, and other improvements have been made in his home on the sea. A few are putting on board for the use both o f the cabin and the forecastle well selected libraries. The sailor boarding houses have been generally im proved; while some o f them are not only strictly temperance houses, but places o f prayer and healthful religious influence. T he home for colored seamen, kept by Mr. W m . P. «Powell— believed to be the only establishment o f the kind in the United States— has-had within a year about 450 boarders. So many o f these were true objects o f charity, and so heavy have been the burdens o f Mr. P., occasioned by the destitute, and so important is the influence o f this establishment, as to induce the Board to grant a small appropriation for his relief.

The Sailor’s Home, established by the American Seamen’ s Friend Society, is still in successful operation. The number o f its boarders the last year is 3,663,and in sixyears, ending with May 1st, 1848,21,919. Capt. Edward Richardson continues to be its faithful superintendent, and keeps it free o f charge to the Society, except an inconsiderable sum for necessary repairs on the building and furniture. It is due to Mrs. Richardson to repeat that she fills her important place with maternal kindness and Christian fidelity. Interesting cases o f conversion, traceable directly to the influence o f the Home, are occasionally published in the Sailor’s Magazine. Old boarders feel themselves so identified with the house as invariably to come home when they return to this port; and the demand for such men as are here furnished has been almost constantly beyond the supply. T he experience o f years is now a lucid and living demonstration o f the fundamental importance o f such establishments.

T he N ew Y ork Mariner’s Tem perance Society, now the largest in the world, and numbering more than t w e n t y -t w o t h o u s a n d m e m b e r s , continues to hold its weekly meetings and exert a life-giving influence. I f some o f its members fall, the great majority stand true to their pledge. Various other efforts are also put forth for the benefit o f seam en; yet what is done in the metropolis o f American commerce correspondent with its rapid increase, and commensurate with the interests at stake ?

PHILADELPHIA.

In addition to the other means for the improvement o f seamen in this city, it is proposed to erect a floating chapel for the worship o f God. The Mariner’s Church, the Rev. O. Douglass preacher, continues to be well attended, and the place where impressions o f good are made upon the minds and hearts o f seamen, never to be effaced. Between twenty and thirty hopeful conversions are reported within the year.

Page 11: ANNUAL REPORT.imageserver.library.yale.edu/digcoll:297051/500.pdf · I give and bequeath to T he American Seamen’s Friend Society, incorporated by the Legislature of New York, in

1 2 TWENTIETH ANNUAL H£PORT.

The new Sailor’s Home, under the superintendence o f Mr. Samuel L. R oom , has now been opened more than a year, and to many a sailor has been a well-spring o f life. The number o f its inmates the last year, was 934. T h e Pennsylvania and the Female Seamen’s Friend Societies aro acting in harmonious and efficient concert.

BALTIMORE.

Notwithstanding the counter-currents o f vice, and the multiplied pernicious influences which meet seamen here, there is manifestly a hand stronger than human, working out their freedom from sin, and bringing them into the desired haven.

' CHARLESTON.

This, in years^ast, has been a highly favored port. Under the faithful ministration o f the chaplain, the Rev. W m . B. Yates, many seamen have been changed in heart and life, in their hopes and prospects. The last has not been so distinguished, as some years have’ been, for the outpouring o f the Holy Spirit ; yet the various means employed in the public and social meetings ; in the distribution o f Bibles and tracts ; in securing more than 600 names to the temperance pledge, and urging on the sailors’ attention the one thing needful, have not been in vain.

Some o f the dead have been brought to life, and the lost found. The Sailor’s Home, under the judicious management o f Mrs. Jane Hamilton, has had 300 boarders within the year; to some o f whom it has been a moral dressing room, where they have been making ready to sit down with the redeemed m the Home above, in robes made white in the blood o f the Lamb.

SAVANNAH.

The second Sabbath in April last, w as a memorable day in the Penfield church. About twenty persons, having been duly organized under the name o f the M a r in e C h u r c h o f S a v a n n a h , sat down for the first time at the table o f the Lord. This is as it should be. W hile they are'not, and should not be sectarian, or denominational, w e know o f no reason for excluding converted seamen from the privileges o f a church relationship o f their o w n ; no reason for depriving them o f the children’s bread at their Master’s table ; no excuse for their neglecting to confess Christ in a public profession ; no excuse for refusing obedience to his dying com mand, This do in remembrance o f me. The Rev. Thom as Hutchings, an old seafaring man, ministers to this church and congregation, with peculiar unction, acceptance and success.

The Home, under the superintendence o f Captain Orrin C. Parker, had, within the year ending December last, sailor boarders, 412; lodgers, 262, w ho took their meals on board their vesse ls ; total, 674. T en or twelve are supposed to have become pious, while numbers more have left port so“ changed in life and character as to justify the belief that they will make the port o f eternal rest.

MOBILE AND BAY.

The Rev. A . McGlashan, chaplain, under date o f April 5, writes in respect to his labors among the 15,000 seamen annually in the Bay :

Page 12: ANNUAL REPORT.imageserver.library.yale.edu/digcoll:297051/500.pdf · I give and bequeath to T he American Seamen’s Friend Society, incorporated by the Legislature of New York, in

TWENTIETH ANNUAL RErOET. 13

“ I devote one third part o f my time to this interesting field. I leave Mobile on Saturday, and go to the bay, visit the ships, converse and pray with the men in the forecastle. On Sunday I hoist the Bethel Flag on some large ship in the centre o f the fleet. W hen the crews from the neighboring ships are on board, and the hour o f 11 arrives, I conduct the services regularly as i f in churcli. I preach twice, v i z : morning and afternoon, to serious and attentive congregations. On the following Mondays I com mence visiting the ships with good books, Bibles and Tracts, and spend two or three days sometimes in this work before returning to the city.”

After speaking o f the apparent and gratifying fruits o f these labors, tho Chaplain add s: “ But much o f the good which I am enabled to do, is almost lost in the intervals o f twt> Sabbaths. H ow much more good could be done i f we had a floating chapel moored in the bay, and the right man on it. It would be a moral light-house to the world ! Our Sailor’s Home, Mr. Joseph S. Tow ne, keeper, is still exerting a salutary influence, It has had since Dec. 6, 915 sailor boarders, and is now full to overflowing. I sat down to breakfast this morning with more than seventy noble tars. The services in the Bethel Church have been usually very solemn, and better attended than in any previous year. Many have gone away seriously impressed, but the results can be known only in eternity. Our Sabbath School children are educating, by monthly contributions, a child in heathen lands.”

Various meetings on week-day evenings for social and religious improvement are well sustained. The subject o f a Floating Bethel is by no means abandoned; its importance is appreciated by the Board, but its heavy expenditure they have no means o f meeting at present. T he Mobile Bethel Society, in the establishment o f their Bethel and Sailor’s Home, have manifested a most commendable devotion to the seamen’s cause. A s in the two previous years, the American Society has made an appropriation towards sustaining their chaplain in preaching the Gospel to seamen in the Bay.

NEW ORLEANS.

During the past year, with the exception o f the summer months, three Bethel chapels have been opened on the Sabbath, and at other stated and occasional times, for the accom modation o f seamen. W e are gratified to learn, that the attendance o f seamen is very good, and that much interest is manifested in the services. The work o f distributing Bibles and Tracts and good books, as also efforts to promote the cause o f temperance among them, is successfully continued. Much credit is due a merchant for the persevering zeal and fidelity with which he has now for a long time visited all the vessels in the 2d Municipalty every Sabbath morning, conversed with the seamen on spiritual subjects, and invited them to the house o f God.

In la n d C om m erce.

Tw elve years ago the Am erican Bethel Society was organized to meet the spiritual wants o f the sailors and boatmen employed on the inland waters. This Society, as an affiliated branch, acts in harmonious concert

That it has done much good, the half deserted jails along the water courses, the dockets o f the criminal courts, the purified language o f the men and boys, their temperate habits, their observance o f the Sabbath, and their self-respect abundantly testify. In addition to six ordained ministers, w ho officiate as chaplains at important posts on the shores o f the great lakes, the Society employs twelve lay missionaries on the Erie Canal and its tributaries; one in Albany Basin; three on the Delaware and Hudson Canal; two on the Delaware and Raritan C anal; one on the Morris C anal; and four on the Canals o f Ohio and vicinity. This is a good beginning; but these and other agencies for good need to be multiplied a hundred fold, to keep pace with the unparalleled increase o f inland com m erce. T en years ago a considerable portion o f the vessels employed on Lake Erie were employed in carrying provision to the ports o f Michigan, to feed the new settlers. T w o years ago it required fifteen steamboats o f the largest class, twenty Propellers, and one hundred and twenty Ships, B rigs and Schooners to bring forward to the eastern market the surplus products o f that country !

The receipts o f this branch for the year ending April 1, 1848, including $2000 raised by the W estern Seamen’s Friend Society at Cleveland, and expended in Ohio, were $9313.

SAILOR’S MAGAZINE.

The Society’s Monthly Publication continues to increase in favor with ■the community, as its steadily increasing list o f subscribers sufficiently indicates. Its present monthly issues are 6,000 cop ies ; 1000 more than last year, and 1,750 more than two years ago. It aims at interesting the mind, and improving the heart; and is regarded as an important auxiliary in awakening and perpetuating an interest in behalf o f seamen.

FINANCES.

The sources whence the incom e o f the past year has been derived, furnish a practical commentary on the words o f the virtuous king o f Judah; The grave cannot praise thee, death cannot celebrate th ee: the living, the living, he shall praise thee. Nearly all the receipts o f the year have com e from the living. The whole amount has been 24,081 40, while the expenditures have been 24,048 15. The Treasurer’s account gives a more minute statement o f the society’s finances, showing not only a gratifying gain, but such an economical and judicious application o f the funds as is calculated to accomplish the greatest and best results.

SUMMARY REVIEW.

Before entering the field o f a new year’s labors, it is well to review and interrogate the past. Is then the work o f promoting the social and moral improvement o f seamen practicable ? The constantly increasing results o f the last twenty years are a sufficient answer.

Is it an important work ? I f it is important to improve the physical condition o f men preparatory to their spiritual elevation; i f it is important to pour light into darkened minds, and joy into sorrowful hearts; i f it is important to reclaim men from sin, and restore them to the image and favor o f G od ; important to save souls from the interminable woes o f the second death, and to sanctify one o f the mightiest influences o f earth, the w ork in which the American Seamen’s Friend Society is engaged is important.

TWENTIETH ANNUAL REPORT. 1 5

Is it an essential w ork ,— essential to the best interests o f the world ?W h o can doubt it when he sees at least nineteen twentieths o f the

great cities located on the sea-shore and navigable rivers, accessible and thronged by seam en; estimate the wide-spread influence o f these men, and find that the sure word o f prophecy has placed the ships o f com merce in the van to lead on the triumphs o f Z ion ’s K ing ? Piety and good works are not more essential to Christian character, than are the efforts to save seamen in the work o f the world’ s conversion to God.

But do the results justify the expenditures, and furnish encouragement for the continued and more vigorous prosecution o f this work ?

Tw enty thousand dollars in a y ea r! or rather more than four times that amount, (for the receipts o f local and auxiliary Societies com e not into the account o f our Treasurer,) raised in the United States, and spent in a single year for the benefit o f seam en!

Eighty thousand grains o f wheat cast into a good soil produce such a harvest as makes the reapers g la d ; and are there similar results from this field ?

W e point to the external improvement o f seamen, every where seen, and by every body acknowledged; to the thousands o f dollars deposited in the Saving’s Banks to their credit; to the sober and manly manner in which they go to sea ; to the testimony o f their masters and officers on their return ; to the general disuse o f the former grog rations at s e a ; to the well filled temperance boarding-liouses on shore ; to the great diminution o f prosecutions in the marine cou rts ; to the thousands o f hearts made glad by the correct deportment o f their sons and brothers; and more especially we point to those displays o f divine grace by which seamen have becom e new creatures in Christ Jesus! Here are fruits not only abundant, but rich enough for the sickles o f angels to gather. Oh, i f the reaper o f wheat forgets the few grains he scattered in the joy s o f the golden abundance he gathers, shall we so dwell on the few dollars expended as to forget what God hath w rought!

The means employed should not be named except to excite regret, and to raise the blush that so little has been attempted ; while the results should awaken new and prolonged thanksgiving to G od ; new and persevering efforts for the year to come.

W e might here record a more particular account o f the conversions o f seamen by means o f the Sailor’s Homes, a preached Gospel, the reading o f the Bible, good books and tracts, personal conversation, and striking providences ; we might speak o f the revivals at sea which have com e to our knowledge the past y e a r ; but these so far as it may be desirable to give them publicity will speak to the heart in the pages o f the Sailor’s M agazine; a few however, are subjoined in an appendix. The Directors congratulate the friends and patrons o f the American Seamen’s Friend Society in view o f its present healthful condition, the happy results o f its labors, and the richer harvests in prospect.

New and important fields are opening, and they hope with the prompt and liberal aid o f all interested in the welfare o f seamen to occupy them. They earnestly bespeak that aid from every friend o f man. They feel that it would be treason to Z ion ’s King, to falter in a work which carries joy to the dwellers on the sea, and rolls a tide o f salvation on every shore. They join the friends o f the cause in a fresh consecration to the work, and in heartily commending it to the continued blessing o f God.

APPENDIX.

These see the works of the Lord and Ms wonders in the 'deep.

T h e B ib le .

O n board a whaler in the Pacific. Ocean, the attention of a sailor was drawn to his Bible. He improved every opportunity alone to read it, and meditate on its truths. In about two months he found the pearl of great price. That voyage was a fortune to him.

A ship about to sail from Philadelphia was supplied with the Bible. At sea she sprung a leak, and for four days all expected to go to the bottom. One of the sailors on his return took occasion to say, “ Oh ! that long neglected book you put on board was sought out, and in perusing it, I found peace in a precious Saviour.”

A whale ship went to Honolulu, in the Sandwich Islands, for supplies; where the captain and crew came under the influence of the faithful labors of the seamen’s chaplain. “ In a few days,” says the captain, “ we left port in search of the whale, but not as before. A change had come over us ; all appeared thoughtful. The Bible which had so long been neglected, or treated with contempt, was read. “ ’Twas then I felt the importance of religion. W e read the Scriptures and attempted to pray together, and God blessed us. Some of us were changed; we hoped made new creatures in Christ, and our ship became a Bethel. Whether in port or at sea, during the remainder of that voyage, I hoisted the Bethel flag on the Sabbath, and many a good meeting we had on board that ship.”

On a voyage from Liverpool to Sidney, a sailor read a portion o f“ Allein’s Alarm.” He arrived at his destination in great spiritual distress. While here, however, God met the returning penitent. In prayer on one occasion he sweetly realized a sense of the divine acceptance in the beautiful language of Watts:

When Jesus shews his heart is mine,And whispeis I am his.

A Pennsylvania blacksmith left his shop for a whale ship. About twelve years passed away and he returned neither to his friends nor to his God. On shipboard a copy of “ Baxter’s Call” fell into his hands. He read it with great interest; was awakened, came to the Sandwich Islands in great distress, and was instructed more fully in Spiritual things by the Rev. Mr. Damon, Chaplain. The result was the submission of his will and heart to God, and the peace which flows from believing in Jesus.

One day in March, a Swedish sailor came to the office of the American Seaman’s Friend Society, to thank one of the Secretaries for a copy of “ Baxter’s Call” given

TWENTIETH ANNUAL REPORT. 17

him about the middle of January last, and which he said had been the means of his own conversion and that of two of his shipmates.

At the Sailor’s Home in Boston, an intelligent seaman was convinced of his sinfulness by reading Buchannan’s Researches. One hundred and nineteen days at sea matured his convictions into what was believed to a sound conversion to God. His influence on his shipmates was decidedly good; several of whom professed to have experienced a similar change.

T racts.

One who had been a sailor thirty-two years gives the following account of himself. “ One day, now about four years back, it rained very hard, and I was scudding between the drops as well as I could—-just getting from awning to awning, at last I stopped under one, and found in my hand the tract called the “ Forgiving African.” How I came by it I can’t call to mind, but I had not read more than a dozen lines when it struck my mind like a flash of light;—what a wretch I am ! How shall I meet God in peace? Why this poor negro, whom perhaps I should have despised, knows more than I do—practises a great deal better. My tears trickled down my face ; my heart was broken all to pieces. I had much distress, but after some time I found peace in Jesus.” Numerous have been the instances where the little tract has been as “ a handful of corn in the top of the mountains.”

A W o r d F it ly Spoken .

Between two and three years ago, the bark “ Siberia,” Captain Bartlett, sailed from Boston for Calcutta. Among the crew was a sailor fond of making light of serious things, and soon after coming on board remarked—“ Well, I learn that there are a couple of pious fellows in our crew.” “ Yes,” said a sailor standing by, “ and I hope I am one of them.” “ And I,” added the next to him, “ hope I am the other.” Never was a sailor more thoroughly thrown aback. His sport was over. He was led to reflection, and to the Saviour. These three commenced prayer meetings in the forecastle, and before they arrived in India, six more were hopefully converted.

G. A. S, is a native of Bjomeboro, Finland. He spent his early youth in that city in the employ of a merchant. Becoming unsteady and dishonest in his habits, he fled his country, and six years ago he was hunting along the docks of London for a sailor’s berth in some vessel. He succeeded, and came to America, where he shipped in a U. S. vessel bound to China and the Pacific Ocean. In the Chinese Sea he was sick both in body and mind. A fever had seized the former, while some words fitly spoken by a pious marine had greatly affected the latter. On the way thence to the Sandwich Islands he read some of the volumes of the “ Christian Library,” by which his convictions for sin were increased. He arrived at Honolulu, and was conveyed to the hospital a wretched man. Here the Rev. Mr. Damon, the seamen’s chaplain, made his acquaintance, and directed his anxious mind to Christ. But he found no peace. His ship had sailed, leaving him sick and sad. He felt that he had been too wicked to claim anything of God, and too unworthy to have any favor bestowed upon him. Gradually his health returned ; and about the 1st of April last he came to New York, and on Sabbath to the Floating Bethel, to hear from the Rev. Mr. Hedstrom words whereby he might be saved. Here the Lord opened his heart, and his peace was as a river. He had saved his money, and now came up the question of making amends for the dishonest deeds in his native city. He went to his minister, and with him to the Swedish Consul, through whom he got a draft for about seven hundred rix dollars. This he has sent to his mercantile employer, with penitent confession, to pay him principal and interest, and with the request that with the balance he will serve some others in the same manner. At the same time he wrote a letter to his relations, telling them the story of God’s merciful dealings with him.

1 8 TWENTIETH ANNUAL REPORT.

I am permitted to make an extract:—“ Having myself found peace in believing, my bowels yearn towards those who are the same bone and ftesh with me, I wish that they also would come to Jesus and be washed clean of their sins, and taste of the cup that is filled with redeeming love.”

M in isteria l F id e lity .

A f e w months since a ship sailed for Calcutta with Missionaries on board. They were bound to a land of darkness to light the pathway of the benighted to Heaven; but they found “ men benighted ” in the same ship with them. As they could unobtrusively, they gained access to the minds and hearts of the sailors, and before the voyage closed, two were rejoicing in new-born hopes, and several other were inquiring the way to be saved.

On board another vessel, bound from Cork to Bermuda, a godly minister was a passenger. He had sailed from Liverpool for New York, but was wrecked and found upon the coast of Ireland. Hence his being found on board the “ British Queen ” bound to the Island of Bermuda. At the end of the voyage as he was on the point of bidding them farewell, the Captain, officers, and crew thus addressed him in a letter:—

“ Rev. and dear Sir—“ W e must acknowledge the goodness of God, who, in His kind Providence,

sent you amongst us to enlighten those dark minds of ours; for truly great was the darkness that beclouded us when you undertook a passage with us from Cork, (Ireland) to this Island. By your good example and the interest you took in our soul’s salvation, we are happy to say_. through divine grace, that it has brought most of us to the knowledge of the truth, and we hope as it is in Jesus our Redeemer.”

T he noble Ship “ Thomas P. Cope ” of Philadelphia, was recently loBt by fire at sea. None but one who has stood ’mid ocean on the hot deck of a burning ship can appreciate the terror of such a scene. One person who was on board and lost all, refused to receive any sympathy from friends on his return, saying, “ I feel that I have not lost any thing, but gained a kingdom.”

Not long since an old seaman. now worn out, and an inmate of the “ Snug Harbor,” spent a night at the “ Sailor’s Home,” New York. Before leaving in the morning he took the superintendent by the hand, saying, “ You, sir, and your good lady are all the friends I have in this world ; all my relatives in Sweden are dead. You have been a brother to me, and I feel deeply sensible of your kindness ” “ Well, my friend, remember that there is one that sticketh closer than a brother.” “ Yes,” replied the old Swede, “ I do remember, that while falling from the main-top gallant-yard at sea once, I cried out, Lord .lesus save me, or I perish ! and the mizen top-sail brace brought me up, which was the means of saving my life. I trust I shall never forget Him.”

S a ilor ’s H om e.At the close of the usual Saturday evening prayer-meeting, a sailor came to the

Superintendent, who in the course of the meeting bad spoken of the immortality of the soul, and said, “ Sir, can I obtain leave to speak with you a few minutes'?” “ Oh, yes, certainly ; why not?” “ Well, sir,” said the sailor, “ will you please to tell me what is a soul I I’ve been thinking a good deal of what you said at family worship,

Page 18: ANNUAL REPORT.imageserver.library.yale.edu/digcoll:297051/500.pdf · I give and bequeath to T he American Seamen’s Friend Society, incorporated by the Legislature of New York, in

and in the prayer-meeting to-night.” They conversed till nearly midnight, and as they separated for their respective rooms, the sailor remarked, “ It is a dreadful thing to die then, if the soul lives forever.” The next morning he professed to feel happier than he had in his life before, and it is believed that he left the Home for the sea a changed man.

A sailor rose in the prayer-meeting one evening, at the Sailor’s Home in New York, and spoke substantially as follows: “ When I last left the Home for the sea, I was very unhappy. I felt bad about this thinking thing within me—what would become of that ? I knew that my body would crumble in the dust, but that—would it think, and think, and think forever ? I grew more and more unhappy, wretched, till I could stand it no longer; so I cast all about the ship for some place where I could get alone to pray. I couldn’t find it, so I went into the forecastle, and before my shipmates fell on my knees, and cried, God be merciful to me a sinner! They laughed at me ; they ridiculed me, and tried to drive me from a throne of grace ; but the more they ridiculed, the more I cried, Lord Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me ! Presently one of my shipmates came and fell down on his knees on my right hand. Then I felt encouraged. Soon after another came and fell down on my left. Then we had a threefold cord, not easily broken. And that—pointing to a fellow sailor sitting by—that is one of them, who is rejoicing in the same Jesus I found at sea.”
