FACILITATING QUALITY LEARNING BY
LINGUISTIC MINORITY CHILDREN This project aims at facilitating quality learning by the children of linguistic minorities with the
participation of the community in Thally, Kelamanagalam and Shoolagiri blocks of Krishangiri
Districts. The project is supported by India Literacy Project, USA.

Training to Anganwadi Workers
Refresher Training to the Anganwadi
Workers was organized during the 1st
week of December 2017 in 3 batches.
During the training the workers were
oriented on the latest Activity book and
Child Assessment Card developed and
designed by ICDS. 28 workers from
Kelamangalam block, 21 workers from
Thally Block and 7 workers from Shoolagiri
block participated in the training. The
participants told that the session was useful to get updated on these materials even before the
department conducted the training.

School Libraries
As planned, 7 school libraries were set up. Books were purchased. The students have been
provided with the membership card. There are
no sufficient teachers in 4 schools to take care
of the school library activities. The project staff
ensured functioning of libraries during their
visit to these schools. The teachers are
managing in other schools. The reading
assessment was carried out in 8 schools
during the months of January and February
2018.
Science Experiments & Exhibitions
45 basic low cost kits were distributed to 13 Middle and 9 High schools in the working area for
Science experiments by the students. CDs were also distributed along explaining how to use
these kits. The kits are used by the teachers in Middle Schools to explain and experiment the
Science concepts. The kits are not properly used by high schools due to lack of availability of
teachers. The project staff used these kits for experiments whenever they visited the school
where there was no teacher. The students those used the kits got motivated to use the low / no
cost materials for such
experiments. School level Science
Exhibitions were organized in 21
schools during the months of

presentations on Science and
showed during the exhibition. This
facilitated the students to show
their understanding in science.
Parents, teachers and peers of
students appreciated those who did outstanding. SMCs arranged to issue prizes in some
schools. The experiments through the science kits helped the students in developing their
creativity.

Learning Level Assessments (LLA) Learning Level Assessments were conducted in all 71
schools during the month of February 2018. The
assessment was done for the students from 2nd to 8th
standard for 5 subjects. 5006 students participated in
these assessments. The following tables show the

Career Guidance and Counseling
Sessions for guiding the students on career opportunities after completing 10th standard were
organized during the period from December 2017 to
March 2018. The Project Manager and Education
Program Associates facilitated these sessions with the
support of teachers. The facilitators explained the
different opportunities available for the students in the
present context after completing 10th standard. The
sessions also included tips to manage the fear of exams and guidelines for appearing
examinations. Career Guidance Chart is displayed in 13 schools.

Sessions on Life Skills
One round of sessions on Life Skills was organized for 374 selected peer leaders studying from
7th to 12th standard in 6 schools. 54 such sessions were organized in regular classes during
the year. There are 3155 children studying in these classes. Trained peer leaders were utilized
as resources. The following topics were taught
during the session through group discussion,
games, lecture and video screening methods.

Meetings of Parents
Meeting of parents of children were organized in 59 villages to motivate them to involve
themselves in the process of learning by the children. 1328 parents participated in these
meetings. It was not possible to
organize the meeting in Alasatti
village due to lack of cooperation
from the Teachers. These meetings
were organized in the schools /
Anganwadis at the villages
concerned. Parents especially

Meeting cum training to Members of SMCs
There was 50 % change over among the members of SMCs during the year. So there was a
need to train the new members in the committees. The trainings were organized during their
monthly meetings. 34 such Meeting cum Trainings were organized during the year. 286
members of SMCs and 298 parents attended these training sessions. The following topics were

Vidhyagiri Matriculation School,
Krishnagiri on 28th January 2018.
12 scholars from ARCOD, 11 scholars from VRDP attended the meeting. Mr. Suriyan from ILP,
Chennai facilitated the meeting. He explained the aspects of Goal Setting (Short term and long
term) and Resume Development.

ADOLESCENTS DEVELOPMENT AND HOME
BASED CARE FOR ANTE NATAL & POST NATAL
MOTHERS This is the 3rd and final year of this project which is supported by UNICEF.
Club Melas
20 club melas were organized during the period from April to September 2017. The club
members got an opportunity to show case their cultural talents in the forms of skit, singing,
dancing etc. As a part of these melas, the club members painted labels on the important and
ancient places, buildings. This helped the club members to understand the history and
importance of their own village. The club members were also trained on making nurseries. They
have raised seedlings and distributed them to the general public and schools.

Meetings with the Community
Meetings of parents and other stakeholders were organized by the club mentors. The results
of monthly tests of the club members were shared with their parents during these meetings.
The parents were encouraged to spend time with their children and involve themselves in the
process of learning by children.
Monthly Tests
The monthly tests were conducted for Tamil, Maths and Science subjects to monitor the
progress of learning by club members. The test question papers were prepared by the project
team in consultation with the teachers and experts in education. The question papers were
prepared for maximum marks of 30 for each subject. The comparative results of tests
conducted in June 2016 and June 2017 are given below. It is evident that there has been
increase in percentage of attendance in tests. The No of members scored > 15 has
considerably increased.

Exposure Trip (Summer Camp)
It was collectively decided in the planning meeting held on 08/04/2017 at Denkanikottai project
office that camp would be
arranged in Mysore. It was also
decided to organize the camp in
6 Phases starting from 2nd May
to 1st June 2017. It was decided
to have around 100 club
members per batch for 14
batches. The core team visited
Mysure on April 25th & 26th
2017 and identified the places to
visit and arranged
accommodation at Youth Hostel, Mysore. The team recommended visiting of Mysore Sri
Chamarajendra Zoological gardens (Zoo), Railway Museum, Brindhavan Garden, Mysore
palace and Sri Chamundeeswari temple. The trip started as per the plan on 2nd May 2017,
buses picked up the eager club members from their villages.
They started from their place on the 1st day morning and reached Mysore in the after -noon
and visited Zoological park, had lunch and visited the Brindavan garden in the evening. Stayed
in Youth Hostel at the
night and started their
tour in the 2ns day by
visiting Railway Museum,
Mysore Palace and
Chamundeeswari
Temple. They were
provided with A School
Bag, Water Bottles, Cap
and snacks.

Training to Club Mentors on Reproductive Health
A three days training to the club Mentors on Reproductive Health was organized in the month
of June 2017 in 2 batches. Ms. Saulina Arnold, Consultant and Former Executive Director of
TNVHA facilitated the training. The sessions were participatory. She exposed the participants
to various aspects of Reproductive Health.
Follow up of AN/PN Mothers
Anti Natal and Post Natal Mothers were given
orientation on the importance of hospital care
during pregnancy, preparedness for safe and
institutional delivery, exclusive breast feeding,
immunization and nutrition. A total of 635 AN
and PN mothers were followed up during the
reporting period.

CHILDLINE - 1098 As a result of continuous efforts in awareness campaigns over the years, the No of calls is
increasing year by year. There were also cases through outreach programs. Childline received
689 calls during the period from April 2017 to March 2018. The project is supported by The
Ministry of Women and Child Development Govt. of India through Childline India Foundation,
Mumbai.
Awareness
Awareness being a routine work, Childline organized the following awareness campaigns in

During the program information on Childline and its services was disseminated through cultural
programs, pasting stickers, group discussion, and issue of notices etc.

CAB Meeting
The Childline Advisory Board (CAB) meeting held
twice in the year. The board discussed about
Awareness, visibility, protocols to be followed during
interventions and support of allied departments during
interventions especially Child Marriage cases.
Open House
This mass program was conducted once in a month in which the entire Childline Team involved
to organize the program. Various cultural events, sport activities and quiz programs were
conducted for the children during these awareness
programs. Children performed well were honored
with gifts. The children were given opportunity to
express their feelings and discuss the issues
affecting them. The general public was also given a
chance to discuss about the issues related to
children and found solutions for many issues
themselves. 12 such programs were organized
during the year.
Press Meet
The press meeting as a part of Se Dosti week was held at Krishnagiri on 15.11.2017. The media
persons were briefed about the Childline Interventions during the meeting.

Mass Awareness
The District Legal Services Authority organized a Mass Awareness Program in Singarpetai and
Hosur. CHILDLINE set up stall in these two programs along with all other Government
Departments. CHILDLINE organized various programs for the visitors. It was a big opportunity
for CHILDLINE to reach out to thousands of people to spread awareness on CHILDLINE. The
District administration organized Mango Exhibition at Krishangiri during July 2017. CHILDLINE
set up a stall and organized games for the children.
Resource Organizations Meeting
District Child Protection Officer, Chairman of CWC, NGOs and representatives from other
organizations working for children participated in the meeting held 23.02.2018 at Childline
office, Krishangiri.

CHILDREN OF KRISHNAGIRI This initiative is to support the children infected by HIV / AIDs in Krishangiri and Dharmapuri
Districts. Individual sponsors are supporting the initiative.
Summer Camp – Light House 2017
The 3rd summer camp for the children (9 to 18 years of age) was organized during the month
of May 2017 in 3 batches at St. Joseph’s Convent Training Center, Anginayanapalli, Krishnagiri.
The 3 days camp was residential. About 130 infected children (Krishnagiri - 100 & Dharmapuri
– 30) attended the camp. Various sessions including counseling and health were organized for
2 days. Dr. Chitha, St. John’s Hospital and her colleagues facilitated these sessions. Thanks to
Sr. Anu of Aikyalaya for having arranged accommodation for the participants. The children were
taken to Agastya International Foundation, Kuppam on the 3rd day for exposure on Science
where they had opportunity to experiment several Science concepts with games and fun.
Exposure Trip – Camp Rainbow
The camp rainbow was organized by YRG Care, Chennai during the month of May 2017. 22
Children were selected from Krishnagiri to attend the camp. The camp held for 5 days at
Chennai. As usual the children enjoyed the trip.
Distribution of Nutrition Kits
The infected children need a balanced nutritious food. As decided in the previous year, the
support for the children is being given as Nutritious Kits. The kit contained Jaggery, green gram,
Soya Beans, Health Mix, Fried Gram, Black Chenna, Karamani, Dates and ground nut. Apart
from the nutrition packets the kit also included toothpaste, hair oil, soap and shampoo packets.
Previously, the kits were distributed in the office at Krishnagiri. This year it was distributed at
the clusters by the staff team.
8th Deepavali Celebration
The 8th Deepavali Celebration was organized for the Children of Krishnagiri on 15.10.2017.
About 275 children with their parents and care givers gathered for the celebration at Meenakshi
Mahal, Krishnagiri. As last year, the majority of the programs were designed and performed by
the children themselves with variety of events this year too. As usual, the children were
distributed with dresses, sweet boxes and crackers boxes. Special thanks to Mr. Subramani,
Aaha Milk Products, Kaveripattinam for having sponsored a very good Lunch to the gathering.

This year’s special gift for the children was Nokia Mobile Phone. Mr. K. G Murali planned to
walk 100 KMs from his residence at Bengaluru to Krishnagiri to mobilize sponsors for phone.
He successfully walked 75 KMs till Shoolagiri on 9th October 2017 and he had to stop there as
he was exhausted. He completed the mission by walking the remaining 25 KMs on 12th October
2017. He could mobilize about Rs. 5 lakhs through the walk.
Medical Care
The children are encouraged to visit the Government Hospitals regularly at the local area to
keep the health. Those who needed intensive treatment were admitted in the Govt. District
Headquarters Hospital, Krishangiri and St. John’s Medical College Hospital, Bengaluru.
Home for Children
As decided the construction of Saranyam – Home for the children started at Bodampatti Road,
Rayakottai. The foundation stone was laid down on 04th March 2018. A proposal requesting
for the support of Rs. 44,73,188/- for construction of buildings has been submitted to M/s. Saint
Gobain Fondation, France.

TANSACS – TARGETED INTERVENTION The Targeted Intervention project is implemented in 6 blocks of Krishnagiri District with the
objective of prevention of spreading of HIV through sex workers. This project is supported by
TANSACS, Chennai.
Community Events
5 block level community events were organized during the year. The following table show the

The Peer Educators took the lead role in mobilizing the community members along with the Out
Reach Workers. The community members were motivated and encouraged to visit the ICTC
and STI clinics to ensure their health and get treatment if needed. The Medical Officers, ICTC
Counsellors gave their inputs to the community during the events.
Medical Camp
A health camp was organized for the target community at Singarapettai,
Uthnagarai block in the month of July 2017. 52 Community members were
screened for illness during the camp. The Medical Officer of ARCOD
TANSACS TI Clinic screened the target people for illness. Health
awareness was also given in the camp.
DIC Level Meetings
Meetings at Drop in Center level were organized in all the working areas during the year. Total
of 983 HRG Women participated in these meetings. The Program Manager, Nurse / Counselor,
Monitoring & Evaluation Officer cum Accountant and ORWs of other blocks were present in the
meeting to provide inputs when necessary. General health check - up was done for the needy
HRG Women. BP and Anemic problems examined for HRG women. 53 women were examined
for minor STI Problems. The community women entertained through cultural activities.

THOZHI – EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN AT
WORKPLACE
Training to members of Federation
10 representatives from workers groups and 13 group members participated in the training. Ms.
Prasannakumari, Coordinator, Krishnagiri CHILDLINE facilitated a session on Communication
on the day 1. Mr. Shaffiq Ahammed, Advocate, Krishnagiri facilitated a session on different acts
and rules related to workers. Mr. Balachandran, NCLP, Krishnagiri explained the different
issues affecting the labour force in Tamil Nadu. Ms. Mahalakshmi, DEEPS shared the
importance and strengths of collectives like federations. The participants were divided in to sub
groups and given topics for discussion. Ice breaking sessions were also organized in the midst
of the training. The participants wrote the proceedings of the group discussion in chart papers
and presented the outcome.
Sensitization Workshop to Media Persons
The workshop was organized on 14th May 2017 at Krishangiri. Mr. T. Sivmurthi, Finance
Manager, ARCOD welcomed the guests and participants. Mr. M. Shankar, presided over. In
his presidential address, he explained the purpose and objectives of the workshop. He also
shared the experiences of Thozhi project at the state level. Mr. Jalaluddin, Director, SWORD,
Krishnagiri, Mr. Shaffiq, Advocate, Krishnagiri also participated in the workshop. 5 workers (Ms.
Muruga, Ms. Shubashini, Ms. Mubina and Ms. Arthi) explained the issues they faced in their
workplace.
Regional Consultation Meeting
The regional consultation meeting was organized on 27th July 2017 for Krishangiri, Dharmapuri
and Vellore districts. 5 workers representatives participated in the meeting from Krishangiri.
Ms. C. Leelavathi coordinated with the team of DEEPS. Ms. C. N. Prasannakumari,
Coordinator, CHILDLINE, Krishangiri addressed the gathering on the issues faced by the
women workers and their rights as per the law. Ms. Sasi from Kaveripattinam explained her
experience as a worker. The District Social Welfare Officer of Dharmapuri addressed the
gathering. She has explained the social security schemes available for the grass root workers,

District level Convention – Rally of Workers for various Demands
The district level convention – Rally of women workers was organized in Krishangiri on 27th
October 2017. About 200 women including various workers, members of self-help groups and
general women participated in the Rally. The Rally started from Anna Statue, Near Bus Stand
Krishangiri and went through Erikarai, Pazhayapet Road to Gandhi Statue, Pzhayapet. The
women participated carried placards showing various demands of the rally. They also
thundered with their voices during the rally. The demands included PF and ESI for all the
unorganized workers, ensuring safety measures at work place, ensuring minimum wage etc.
Consultative Meeting with NGOs
The Consultative meeting with the NGOs in the district was organized in Krishnagiri on 19th
December 2017. 10 Directors
of NGOs in the district
participated in the meeting.

Sivamurthi welcomed all the participants and explained the activities carried out for the past 2
years in the district under Thozhi Project. Mr. Shankar explained the objectives and activities
of Thozhi at the state level. The participants were requested to share their views and ideas for
the future strategies of the project,

INTERNET SAATHI
Internet Saathi is a joint initiative of Google and TATA Trusts and implemented through Voice
Foundation, Chennai. This program aims at creating awareness among rural communities
about Internet and its benefits. This digital literacy program is implemented in Krishangiri by
ARCOD.
Training to Internet Saathis
149 Internet Saathis were identified in the district. The Internet Saathis are trained on
implementing the literacy program in 4 batches during the month of March 2018. These
trainings held in Uthangarai, Krishangiri, Shoolagiri and Denkanikottai. Each saathi is expected
to reach out to 700 women in 3 or 4 revenue villages and train them on mobile phone and
internet usage.

The Hindu Kush Nivaran Sangh, Chennai gave an amount of Rs. 50,000/- for the welfare of
Leprosy Patients. The following materials were purchased and distributed to 50 patients

The patients were invited to
the office of ARCOD at
Denkanikottai on 9th September 2017. About 13 patients came and got the aid materials kit.
Mr. V.R. Keshavraj, Executive Director, Mr. T. Sivamurthi, Finance Manager of ARCOD and
Mr. Joseph Stalin of RDC, Denkanikottai distributed the kits. Remaining kits were distributed to
patients at their home by the staff team of ARCOD.

PROMOTION OF FARMER PRODUCER COMPANY
ARCOD promoted a
Farmer Producer
Company at Anchetty by
mobilizing farmers and
registered a Company.
There are 500 farmers as
shareholders in the
company with a capital of
Rs. 5 lakhs. Efforts were taken during the year to establish Rural Mart with the support of
NABARD.
GIFT A FUTURE
Gift a future is a support program for the students from economically backward families and
studying in private schools. The
program aims at providing
financial support to motivate the
students and parents. The project
is implemented in Krishnagiri and
Dharmapuri Districts. An amount
of about Rs. 12.00 lakhs has been
paid towards school fees on
behalf of 243 students during the

EVENTS
30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
ARCOD celebrated its 30th Anniversary on 17th March 2018 at SGR Mahal, Rayakottai. Board
Members, Guests, Children, Women and members of staff team gathered and the event started
at around 11.00 am. Mr. P. Chandrasekar, President, ARCOD welcomed the gathering. Mr. T.
Sivamurthi introduced the Project staff team and explained about the present projects. The staff
team shared their experiences in the field. A panel discussion held to discuss about the scope
and vision for ARCOD for the next decade. NGO leaders, experts in development sector, youth
and farmers participated in the discussion and shared their thoughts. Cultural programs
including singing, dance and magic show were organized as a part of the celebration.
VISITORS
Dr. Aruna Rathnam, Education Specialist, UNICEF visited during 21st and 22nd April
2017 and had discussion with the club mentors.
Mr. A.L. Rangarajan, ILP visited Nanadimanagalam, T Sulagunda, Bidireddy and A.
Kothapalli villages on 25th July 2017. During the visit he interacted with the teachers
and children.
Ms. Padmaja, Ms. Sumitha and Mr. A.L. Rangarajan visited B Lakkasandiram,
Poonapalli and Dodda belur villages on 26th July 2017. During the visit they interacted
with the teachers, Anganwadi worker and children.
Mr. Raj Kishore, ILP, USA, Mr. A.L. Rangarajan and Mr. Ravi visited Karadikkal, T.
Sulaginda and Ullatti Villages on 4th January 2018.
