ANNUAL REPORT 2012
About the Foundation
Founded in 1957, the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) is a leading, national
organization with an extensive network of chapters, support groups and Centers
of Excellence in the United States, Canada and internationally. Unique among
the Parkinson’s organizations, NPF has a singular focus: our mission is to improve
the quality of Parkinson’s care through research, education and outreach. NPF has
funded more than $172 million in research, education and support services.
We have created a global network serving the
needs of the Parkinson’s community including:
· 39 Centers of Excellence at top medical centers
around the world, including 24 in the United
States and 15 internationally
· Chapters and support groups across the
United States, serving more than 100,000
people with Parkinson’s and their families
· Parkinson.org and educational materials that
reach more than one million people each year.
The mission of the
National Parkinson
Foundation (NPF) is
to improve the quality of
Parkinson’s care through
research, education and
outreach.

Chairman’s Message
2012 was a landmark year for the National Parkinson Foundation.
Not only did we continue to deliver our full array of research and
programs to improve the lives of everyone living with Parkinson’s
today, we also launched brand new programs and exciting
campaigns specifically designed to improve the lives of people
with Parkinson’s, their families and healthcare professionals.
Let me highlight a few of these for you: The Parkinson’s
Outcomes Project, the largest study of Parkinson’s ever
conducted, is still in its infancy, but this year we showed
how different approaches to care and, specifically, managing
depression has the potential to slow the impact of this disease.
Through the Parkinson’s Outcomes Project, we are setting the
standard for quality care. Moving Day® continues to gain momentum and soon enough will be
in many major cities. Finally, the Aware in Care hospitalization kits are flying off the shelves and
reaching people across America; we are empowering thousands of people with Parkinson’s
to take control of their own health while in the hospital.
The pages within this report detail the amazing work that has happened across the NPF network
over the past year. I commend the hard work of NPF’s vast network of doctors, nurses, social workers,
volunteers and staff for turning our mission into a reality on a daily basis.
From east coast to west, north to south and all the way around the world, NPF has become the leader
in the Parkinson’s community focused on families and patient care. None of this would be possible
without the support of donors such as you and those around the country. Simply put, we could not
have done any of this without you. It’s true – People Who Move Actually Do Change the World!
Warm wishes,
Bernard J. Fogel, MD Chairman of the Board

“ The most memorable moment
for myself, and my mother as well,
was definitely meeting some very
wonderful and amazing people who
share the same goal as us: raising
awareness, education, and funds
to improve the treatment for those
suffering from Parkinson’s. ”
NPF’s Moving Day®,
Walk for Parkinson’s, is a
national, grassroots campaign
that raises awareness as well
as funds for local programs
and services. What started in
three pilot locations in 2011
expanded to 17 Moving Day
walks in 2012.
With this national event, we are beginning to
change the world for people with Parkinson’s;
the slogan of Moving Day is “People Who Move
Change the World.” Moving Day highlights
movement and exercise as a symbol of hope
and progress because of its essential role in
treating Parkinson’s disease.
NPF could not have accomplished this without
the generous support of our Honorary National
Chair, Katie Couric, and our National Corporate
Partners: UCB, Teva/CNS, Right at Home,
Medtronic, and thousands of families nationwide.

People with Parkinson’s are admitted
to the hospital 50 percent more than
their peers, and have longer hospital
stays. Once admitted, three out of four
do not receive their medications on
time – some with disastrous results. After funding research
to understand this problem, NPF launched a national
Aware in Care campaign to empower people with
Parkinson’s disease to advocate for the care they need.
Aware in Care includes a free kit and educational materials
to help people engage with their support network—family,
friends, and support groups—to ensure the right care.
Everything you need to manage a hospital stay and materials
to share with hospital staff are together in one place.
The Aware in Care kit includes: a Hospital Action Plan,
an ID Bracelet, a Medical Alert Card, Medication Forms,
a Parkinson’s Disease Fact Sheet, “I Have Parkinson’s”
Reminder Slips, a Thank You card, and a magnet for
a hospital bed.
generous support for the Aware in Care campaign has
been provided by the leading sponsor, The Edmond J. Safra
Phil anthropic Foundation, Teva Neuroscience, Abbott,
UCB, Novartis, The Eleanor M. and Herbert D. Katz Family
Foundation, and The Thompkins-Broll Family Foundation.
Marty, 71Aware in Care kit recipient
“ Having the Aware in Care kit has
made a world of difference in the
treatment I received. As a result,
I didn’t have any trouble getting
my medications on time while in the
emergency room. Everyone with
Parkinson’s should have one. ”

MOvINg BEYOND LIMITATIONS: PARkINSON’SOUtCOMES PROjECtAt the end of 2012, NPF released the “Parkinson’s Outcomes
Project: Report to the Community” which identified depres sion
as the most important factor influencing health status. The
Parkinson’s Outcomes Project seeks to identify factors that
can slow the course of the disease and help people live longer,
better, and more active lives. This largest clinical study of
Parkinson’s ever conducted, represents data from more than
6,000 people living with Parkinson’s in four countries.
For the first time, the Parkinson’s Outcomes Project is
showing that different centers achieve different results in
their patients. Focusing on the entire spectrum of Parkinson’s
care, the project will determine best treatments and paths
toward better outcomes.
The project was funded by thousands of families
affected by Parkinson’s disease and generous support
from the following foundations and corporations: Abbott,
Braman Family Foundation, Inc., Major League Baseball
Players Trust, NPF Minnesota, Parkinson’s Unity Walk,
NPF South Palm Beach County Chapter, St. Jude Medical,
Teva Neuroscience, The greenberg-May Foundation, Inc.,
The Kinetics Foundation, The Leir Charitable Foundation,
and The Thompkins-Broll Family Foundation.
Matthew Stern, MDUniversity of Pennsylvania, President-Elect
of the Movement Disorder Society
“ Routine aspects of care are
rarely studied, so this research is
invaluable in proving that there
are vast disparities in Parkinson’s
treatment and showing which
aspects of care really work. This
latest data demonstrates how
important it is to quality care to
refer patients for multi-faceted
treatment of depression. ”
