LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE Stephanie Fahringer

*CALL TO WORSHIP……………………………………...Stephanie Fahringer The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of seeds on earth; it grows up and becomes the greatest of shrubs, and the birds of the air make nests in its shade. Give thanks to God, whose promised reign is coming. Thanks be to God! *PRAYER OF THE DAY…………………………………...Stephanie Fahringer God, you are the gardener of all creation. You planted this world with the seeds of your love and grow them with your faithfulness. We are your harvest; we find our meaning and sustenance in you. May our minds listen to you calling, may our hearts be attuned to your will, may our feet follow you in the world, through Jesus, the Word become flesh. Amen. *HYMN #370 ……………………………………"This Is My Father’s World"

CALL TO CONFESSION…………………………………….Stephanie Fahringer PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) ………….…………Stephanie Fahringer Holy God, the parable of the mustard seed teaches us that a little faith can produce great work in your kingdom. Yet we are too timid to bear the fruit of your righteousness, for we walk by sight and not by faith. Forgive us, Lord; we do not uphold the poor or the oppressed. We do not advocate for the powerless or the voiceless. We do not sacrifice ourselves for the needs of our neighbors. Renew us with the love of Christ so that we live no longer for ourselves, but for Christ who became the seed of your righteousness in us. Amen. SILENT PRAYER OF CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE *RESPONSE IN SONG #469 Lord, listen to your children praying. Lord, send your Spirit in this place. Lord, listen to your children praying. Send us love; send us power; send us grace. *THE PEACE Jesus said: “As the Lord has forgiven us, let us also forgive one another.” The peace of the Lord Jesus be with you. And also with you. We exchange signs of peace.

SPECIAL MUSIC “Faith of our Fathers” arr. Lee Rogers Shirley Schoffelman, Pianist PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION……………………………….Stephanie Fahringer PSALM 20: A RESPONSORIAL SETTING Refrain Verses 1-4 Refrain Verses 5-6 Refrain Verses 7-9 Refrain OLD TESTAMENT…………………………………1 Samuel 15:34-16:13 (pg. 259) EPISTLE……………………2 Corinthians 5:6-10, 14-17 (responsive, The Message) That’s why we live with such good cheer. You won’t see us drooping our heads or dragging our feet! Cramped conditions here don’t get us down. They only remind us of the spacious living conditions ahead. It’s what we trust in but don’t yet see that keeps us going. Do you suppose a few ruts in the road or rocks in the path are going to stop us? When the time comes, we’ll be plenty ready to exchange exile for homecoming. But neither exile nor homecoming is the main thing. Cheerfully pleasing God is the main thing, and that’s what we aim to do, regardless of our conditions. Sooner or later we’ll all have to face God, regardless of our conditions. We will appear before Christ and take what’s coming to us as a result of our actions, either good or bad. Our firm decision is to work from this focused center: One man died for everyone. That puts everyone in the same boat. He included everyone in his death so that everyone could also be included in his life, a resurrection life, a far better life than people ever lived on their own. Because of this decision we don’t evaluate people by what they have or how they look. We looked at the Messiah that way once and got it all wrong, as you know. We certainly don’t look at him that way anymore. Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
