Announcements for Sunday, October 13, 2013 St. Matthew’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Wauwatosa www.stmattslutheran.org We welcome each of you to worship. Our gracious, all-forgiving God receives you with open arms. May his love strengthen you today. Introduction for the Day: It’s a miracle! Multiple miracles! The waters of holy baptism have healed us. The body and blood of Jesus in Holy Communion have made us clean. We have died with Christ and been raised with him. From all this we have returned to offer thanks. From this place we are sent on our way rejoicing to share the good news. A Library Book has been given to the church library by Joe, Lisa and Emily Chiesa in honor of Abby’s 12th birthday. Sheri Masiakowski is our guest organist today filling in while John is away. Please make her feel welcome. Ministry Scheduler Pro Sunday morning volunteers are scheduled utilizing Ministry Scheduler Pro (MSP), on on-line automatic scheduling program. All volunteers have been sent e-mails with log-in information. If you need the information please contact Sue Swing; [email protected]. Questions about the schedule and system can best be answered via phone call and e-mail to Sue Swing; [email protected] or 414-774-0441. Tip for the Week: Why Am I Getting So Many E-Mails for Sub Requests? When a volunteer requests a sub the system sends an e-mail request to ALL qualified volunteers. For example, an 11:00 Usher sub request will go out to ALL 11:00 ushers. If you/your family are involved in multiple areas of service on Sunday morning you may receive a lot of sub request e-mails. There is no need to ever reply to these e-mails unless you want to fulfill the sub request. Just delete them. If you don’t want to receive the e-mails or be available as a sub we can make that adjustment in your profile. Contact Sue Swing; sueswing @sbcglobal.net.

October 13, 20 and 27Finding Christ in a secular society: Faith and reason in a modern worldA prominent Catholic philosopher recently kick-started an international debate with this question: “Why was it virtually impossible not to believe in God in, say, 1500 in our Western society, while in 2000 many find this not only easy but even inescapable?”In this class, we will seek to answer that question -- and many more. For example, what does it mean to live in a secular society? Just how different is our view of the universe and God from that of Christians just a few years ago? Why does faith flourish in some Western societies and not others? How are people integrating their Christian faith with their otherwise secular views? Daniel Bice will lead this three-week discussion and debate on the changing nature of faith and reason.

‘Building for the Future’ Annual Stewardship Program begins Oct. 20 This year’s theme, ‘Building the Future,’ describes much about St. Matthew’s - ‘building’ in terms of construction, in terms of faith, and in terms of building community. We are blessed with talents, resources, and a ‘can-do’ spirit that guides us in building to make a difference in the world! This year’s campaign uses the familiar route captain approach. Following the campaign kickoff on the Sunday, October 20, you will be contacted by your route captain to schedule the drop-off and pick-up of your Stewardship materials. Some members receive their commitment packets by mail. As you complete your commitments, please consider how you can ‘Build for the Future,’ whether thru financial commitments or deeper involvement in our many activities and ministries.

For those with interest in an Adult Mission Trip to help our Oklahoma neighbors In Luke’s gospel a lawyer asks Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus responds by telling the story of the Good Samaritan, a story that calls us to move beyond our comfort zone to reach out and help others. We have that opportunity in Moore, Oklahoma where on May 20, a level 5 tornado touched down killing 23 people, injuring about 400, and destroying over 1,100 homes. Based on a mission trip currently being run by St. Luke’s in Waukesha, plans are taking shape for St. Matthew’s to do a similar trip some time this spring. There will be a meeting on September 24 to share information on a St. Matthew’s trip.

Your Help is Needed to Ship Food to El Salvador! Can You Help Us Raise $20,000? The Salvadoran Lutheran Church needs your help in the fight against hunger. Each year, the church depends on food shipments sent by St. Matthew’s to meet emergency food needs of struggling families and senior citizens. The shipments, which contain packets of nutritionally fortified rice, cost approximately $10,000 to ship (for over $50,000 worth of food). We hope to ship two containers of food in the next 6 months, with the next shipment occurring later this fall. If you can help us reach our goal of $20,000, please make a check to St. Matthew’s, and designate it for “El Salvador Food Shipment.”

Blessing Sunday at Reformation Lutheran on October 20th

A special invitation to all from Pastor Marilyn Miller:

Have you ever seen or experienced a Ò shower of blessingÓ ? Well, if not, I invite you to come to Reformation especially when your faith gets weak or you’re feeling lonely or blue. Come if you want to see what good partnership ministry looks like or you just need to be reminded of how good our God is! Join us for Blessing Sunday on Sunday, October 20th. We will celebrate our partnership with worship at 10 AM and potluck afterwards. Partners are asked to bring a gift for Reformation’s ministries and a dish to pass Ð meat, casserole, or salad. Thank you in advance for the gifts that you shower on God’s home on the corner of N. 35th & Garfield. Let it rain! Amen.

- OR -If you want to remain in your car and your child is not waiting for you, continue to drive forward and circle in the parking lot until your child has been released from Sunday School. Rather than going onto Milwaukee Ave when you circle, you can make the circle while still in the parking lot.

A musical outreach event to help another church’s musical legacyJohn Paradowski offers Benefit Organ Recital at St. Francis Church, Milwaukee On All Saints Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 3:00 the pipes of the 1885 Wm. Schuelke organ at St. Francis of Assisi R.C. Church in Milwaukee (1927 N 4th Street; 4th and Brown) will sing to the strains of music of the period and beyond. John Paradowski is giving a benefit organ concert to help maintain this historic pipe organ from 1885. This organ has remained virtually untouched for over 125 years. Included on the program are works by composers of the era of the organ, sounds from this instrument that these composers would know intimately. What is even more intriguing in repertoire planning is finding the modern pieces that work on an historical instrument. So in a triptych in honor of All Saints Day/Sunday we hear music of contemporary composers. We even will dip into the musical waters of South America for a little Jazz. I hope you will be able to attend and enjoy the sounds of 1885 no matter when the music to be shared was written. Ample and secure parking is available next to the church. John Paradowski, Director of Music
