Keep up the great work, everyone! Now Accepting Abstracts for Scientific Day
We are now accepting clinical and basic science abstracts for oral presentation at Scientific Day from residents and fellows in the Department of Surgery. Abstracts will be presented in the CNSI Auditorium on Wednesday, April 29, 7:00 am – 10 am. Presenters will receive a 4-8 minute time slot, a commemorative certificate and complimentary attendance at the Longmire Surgical Society Dinner taking place on Friday, May 1, 2020. This year’s honored guest is Dr. Frederick R. Eilber who will be presented by Dr. Fritz C. Eilber.
Frederick R. Eilber, MD did his undergraduate work and attended medical school at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1965. He did his medical internship and
surgical residency at the University of Maryland Hospital. Dr. Eilber applied for the elite Associate Training Program at the National Institutes of Health. He was accepted for one of five coveted positions and it was in that program that he became interested in cancer research. Following
the NIH program, Frederick Eilber returned to the University of Maryland Hospital as chief surgical resident,
and later was a senior fellow at M.D. Anderson.

Save the Date
Our Fourth Annual General Surgery Family Bowling Social is scheduled for Saturday March 7 from 3:00 – 6:00 pm at Bowlmor in Santa Monica. Come and enjoy food, games, and family friendly good times. Mock Orals are scheduled for Wednesday June 3, 2020 from 7 am – 10:30 am. This year, we have a full house. We’ll be hosting Cedar Sinai and USC residents.
House Staff Forum and Breakfast As you grab breakfast, U-ACT (UCLA Advocacy Collaborative Team), a new GME wide collaboration to share advocacy efforts and calls to action across training programs, invites you to stop by their “Take Action Table.” You will learn about the 2020 census and how to talk to your patients about the importance of participating in the census.

The 15th Annual Academic Surgical Congress in Orlando, Florida
The Second Annual Chancellor’s Award for Community-Engaged Scholars
This program offers five $10,000 awards to support a cohort of UCLA ladder faculty who will advance community-engaged research and integrate this work within undergraduate education. What is community-engaged research? It is research and creative work across all fields that address an agenda of social justice and achieves high levels of scholarly recognition with the field. The application requires a 2-3 page proposal, a CV, and evidence of support from your department chair. The deadline to submit your application to [email protected] is April 3, 2020.

The Second UCLA Solid Organ Transplant Symposium is a one-day conference coordinated through UCLA Health Department of Transplant Services, the UCLA Office of Continuing Medical Education and the UCLA Transplant Multi-Disciplinary teams. The goal of this program is to provide a forum for UCLA Transplant multidisciplinary team experts to discuss the organ shortage crisis and explore recent changes to organ allocation and expansion of donor criteria that may help attenuate the gap between the supply of and demand for organ donors, while striving for ethical management of a scarce resource. The CTSI Training Program in Translational Science are accepting applications for their Certificate Program and MSCR Program
The Training Program in Translational Science (TPTS) Certificate Program is a structured, two-year certificate program that provides participants with the necessary training to become successful patient-oriented investigators who can bridge molecular medicine and clinical research. Successful completion of this program leads to the CTSI Training Program in Translational Science Certificate from the David Geffen School of Medicine. Participation in the Certificate Program is viewed favorably by K23 study sections. Certificate trainees audit courses, lectures and seminars. The audit option requires no fees, and no graduate credit is given. Applications accepted until May 15, 2020. Visit http://ctsi.ucla.edu/education/pages/tpts#track2 for further details.
The Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) Graduate Program is designed to train fellows and faculty to:
Design and conduct clinical research Successfully compete for funding Analyze data and interpret research
results Present research at scientific meetings
and in the medical literature It is a two-year program, including the requirement of a research thesis or capstone project, for those with career aspirations in academic medicine. The MSCR Program has two tracks: Clinical Research/Clinical Trials and Biomedical informatics. Tuition source is required. Applications accepted until May 15, 2020. Applications for the 2020 Innovation Fund competition are now open. The UCLA Innovation fund speeds technologies from idea to market and bridges the funding gap between academic and industry.
You could be awarded up to $200K for your project to support commercialization activities not supported by basic research grants. The application includes a letter of intent, full application, and a pitch presentation. This is not your traditional research award. UCLA Bio design Faculty Innovators represent UCLA faculty interested in inventing technology at the intersection of medical devices, diagnostics, software, and digital therapeutics. UCLA Bio design Faculty Innovators is a longitudinal program during the 2020 – 2021 academic year beginning the last week of July 2020. A two-week intensive boot camp led by executives from across the healthcare, med tech, and investor communities introduces participants to design thinking methodologies, product design and development, data utilization, manufacturing, regulatory strategy, intellectual property, healthcare economics, and more. Postgraduate Training and Licensing Q&A Who is required to obtain a Postgraduate Training License? A resident who has not already completed 36 months of accredited training. When should I start my application for a PTL? ASAP. Enrollment forms for all residents that require a PTL have already been submitted. Will I be reimbursed for the application fee? Yes, submit receipts and proof of payment to Andrea as soon as you can to allow for faster processing. What is the deadline for obtaining a PTL? June 30, 2020. Can the holder of a Postgraduate Training License be issued a DEA controlled substance permit? The Board has confirmed with the DEA that a resident with a PTL can have this permit. What is the next step once a Postgraduate Training Licensee meets the 36-month requirement of postgraduate training? The applicant must submit an Application to Transition from Postgraduate Training License to a Physician’s and Surgeon’s License. Residents may submit the transition application up to 120 days prior to completion of the 36 months of Board-approved training.

Dr. Richard Hall was an Irish immigrant who overcame great obstacles to become the first director of the surgical department at Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara’s first hospital. In 1886, Hall performed the first successful appendectomy in the US. Ironically, he died of a ruptured appendix on January 24, 1987.
Thank a Resident Day was February 28th, 2020. This initiative was created by The Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) to honor those in residency for their dedication to their instutition and the medical field.
