Arise, shine, for your light has come:the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.Arise, shine, for your light has come:the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.The Lord will arise upon you: and his glory will be seen over you.The glory of the Lord has risen upon you.Nations shall come to your light:and kings to your dawning brightness. The glory of the Lord has risen upon you.Your gates will always be open, shut neither by day nor by night. The glory of the Lord has risen upon you.The Lord will be your everlasting light: your God will be your glory. The glory of the Lord has risen upon you.Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.Arise, shine, for your light has come:the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

And that future years shall see,Evermore and evermore.

At his Word the worlds were framed. He commanded, it was done:Heaven and earth and depths of oceanIn their threefold order one;All that grows beneath the shiningOf the moon and burning sun,Evermore and evermore.

O that birth for ever bless-ed,When the virgin, full of grace,By the Holy Ghost conceiving.Bare the saviour of our race,And the babe, the world’s redeemer,First revealed his sacred face,Evermore and evermore.

Christ to thee, with God the Father,And, O Holy Ghost, to thee,Hymn and chant and high thanksgiving,And unwearied praises be;Honour, glory, and dominionAnd eternal victory,Evermore and evermore. Please be seated.

read by Ken BarkIn the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For weobserved his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priestsand scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Responsory Please stand.

This day a star leads the wise men to the manger.Arise, shine; for your light has comeAnd the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.Nations shall come to your lightAnd kings to the brightness of your rising. They shall bring gold and frankincenseAnd proclaim the praise of the Lord.Your gates will lie open continuallyShut neither by day nor by night. No more will the sun give you daylightNor moonlight shine upon you.But the Lord will be your everlasting lightYour God will be your splendour.

Hymn (Puer nobis nascitur)

Page 5: Announcements 13 Jan 2013

From east to west, from shore to shore,Let every heart awake and singThe holy child whom Mary bore,The Christ, the everlasting King.

Behold! The world’s creator wears The form and fashion of a slave; Our very flesh our Maker shares,His fallen creature now to save.

For this how wondrously he wrought!A maiden, in her lowly place,Became, in ways beyond all thought,The chosen vessel of his grace.

Assenting to the angel’s word,She chose what God the Spirit willed,And suddenly the promised LordThat pure and hallowed temple filled.

He shrank not from the oxen’s stall,He lay within the manger bed,And he whose bounty feeds us allAt Mary’s breast himself was fed.

And while the angels in the skySang praise above the silent field,To shepherds poor the Lord most high,The one great Shepherd, was revealed.

All glory for this bless-ed mornTo God, the source of all, is due;All praise to you, O virgin-born;All praise, O Holy Ghost, to you.

Bidding PrayerIn the name of Christ, who called us out of darkness into his marvellous light, to be a kingdom of priests to our God, we welcome you. Grace to you and peace. As we rejoice in the Word made flesh, who comes among us to reveal God’s glory,so we pray that his kingly reign may be acknowledged throughout the world. And so we pray for the unity and mission of Christ’s Church, for the ministers of the gospel of Christ, and for all for whom we bear witness. We pray for this world, which is already Christ’s, that we may have reverence for the natural order and respect for every person, made in the image and likeness of God. And we pray for those who stand in need, for the lonely, the fearful, the anxious, for the sick and the bereaved, and all who have no one to pray for them. May God our Father take us and use us in his service; may he open our eyes to see his glory, and equip us to bless his people, now and at all times. Amen.

And so we say together the prayer Jesus himself taught us:Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.Thy kingdom come.Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation;but deliver us from evil:for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Please be seated.

Reading: Matthew 2: 7-12 The Wise Men present their gifts read by Darryl NakamotoThen Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sentthem to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their owncountry by another road.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Hymn (Greensleeves) Please stand. What child is this, who, laid to restOn Mary’s lap is sleeping?Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King,Whom shepherds worship and angels sing:Haste, haste to bring him praiseThe Babe, the son of Mary.

Why lies he in such mean estate,Where ox and ass are feeding?Come, have no fear, God’s son is here,His love all loves exceeding:

Page 8: Announcements 13 Jan 2013

Nails, spear, shall pierce him through,The cross be borne for me, for you:Hail, hail, the Saviour comes,The Babe, the son of Mary.

So bring him incense, gold and myrrh,All tongues and peoples own him,The King of kings salvation brings,Let every heart enthrone him:Raise, raise your song on highWhile Mary sings a lullaby,Joy, joy, for Christ is born,The Babe, the son of Mary.

Please be seated.Choir: When to the temple Mary went – Johann Eccard (1553-1611)

Reading: Luke 2: 22-33 Jesus is Presented in the Temple and acclaimed the light of the world read by Helen Taylor When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, Jesus’ parents brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to theconsolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents

Page 9: Announcements 13 Jan 2013

brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God,saying, “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.” And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
