SYSTEMS APPROACHES FOR AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

An International Symposium on Modeling in Agricultural Research in Developing Countries, November 1991, Asian Institute for

Technology (AIT), Bangkok, Thailand

This symposium is organized by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), in collaboration with AIT (Asian Institute of Technology), CABO (Center for Agrobiological Research, Wageningen, The Netherlands), IBSNAT (International Benchmark Soils Network for Agrotechnology Transfer, USAID/University of Hawaii), SARP (Simulation and Systems Analysis for Rice Production, a collaborative project of IRRI, CABO and TPE) and TPE (Department of Theoretical Production Ecology, Wageningen Agricultural University, Wageningen, The Netherlands).

The objectives of the symposium are • To review the status of systems research and modeling in agriculture,

with special reference to evaluating their efficacy and efficiency for achieving research goals, and to their application in developing countries.

• To promote international cooperation in modeling, and increase awareness of systems research and simulation.

Leading speakers will present keynote addresses on systems approaches in Agricultural research; Education, training, and technology transfer; Agricultural policy and practical applications.

250 Announcement

Submitted papers, posters and demonstrations will be arranged according to the themes: Crop production systems (genotypic constraints; weather related constraints; soil constraints; and biological constraints); Farming systems; and Training in systems research.

Participants will include senior research leaders from developipg countries. Agricultural scientists from developing countries, North America, Australia and Europe are expected to participate. Participation from CGIAR centers is anticipated. Many collaborators of the SARP and IBSNAT projects on systems simulation will take part. The number of participants is expected to be about 150. The proceedings of the symposium will be published as books and/or special issues of Agricultural Systems.

If you are interested in attending the symposium or in receiving further information about it, please contact Dr F. W. T. Penning de Fries or Dr P. S. Teng, IRRI, PO Box 933, Manila, The Philippines (Fax. No. 63 2 8182087; CGNET address CG1401; Telex (ITT) 45365 or (RCA) 22456).
