Primary Sources.

Act of Congress, Signed into law by George W. Bush. The Patriot Act.< http://www.fincen.gov/>

The patriot acts were acts passed in the wake of the events that took place on September 11th, 2001. Its

goals are to strengthen domestic security and broaden the powers of law-enforcement agencies with

regards to identifying and stopping terrorists. This act threatens civil liberties, and the democracy it seeks

to protect. This act can be related to the Homeland security act, due to the fact that it is interfering with

the civil liberties of citizens. The information from this source helped me in proving my points, and it

helped me study deeper into the acts.

Bill of Rights. The Fifth Amendment. The fifth amendment is an amendment to the Constitution of the United States that imposes restrictionson the government's prosecution of persons accused of crimes; mandates due process of law and

prohibits self-incrimination and double jeopardy; requires just compensation if private property is taken

for public use. This amendment helped me prove that people have the right against self-incrimination,

and Homeland security is contravening the amendment for the sake of the war on terrorism.

Bill of Rights. The First Amendment. The first amendment is an amendment to the Constitution of the United States guaranteeing the right of

free expression; includes freedom of assembly and freedom of the press and freedom of religion and

freedom of speech. This amendment helped in my research by providing additional support that proves

the right to our privacy.

Bill of Rights. The Fourth Amendment.The Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution is the part of the Bill of Rights that prohibits

unreasonable searches and seizures and requires any warrant to be judicially sanctioned and supported

by probable cause. This amendment helped in my research by allowing me to use it as an argument to

prove that Homeland Security is accusing those of terrorism, and believe they have the ability search and

seizure those who fit the profile.

Group presentation Essay, John A. Dowell as instructor. How Has the War on Terrorism Affected CivilLiberties?

This essay speaks about governments responsibility to protect citizens, and the new gained power that

law enforcement and intelligence agencies obtained after September 11th, 2001 in order to prevent any

terrorist attacks in the future. The essay also talks about what civil liberties or amendments are being

jeopardized due to governments new responsibility. I used this essay in assistance to form my main

points, and look for valid details to include.

Homeland Security. This website includes the cause, news, and involvement of Homeland Security. It is also the primary

website for Homeland Security. It speaks about the cause, and reason for its birth, and how the common

man can assist in protect the nation. I used this essay as a source just to be more informed on Homeland

Security in general, to make sure I got all my information correct, and not going off biased information

from other secondary sources.

Leonard Wong and Douglas C. Lovelace, Jr. Homeland Security and civil liberties.

This is a PDF document from the University of Pennsylvania Law School that discusses Homeland security

and civil liberties. The Global War onTerrorism (GWOT) is a challenge unprecedented in American

history. It dictates a reexamination of the balance between national security and civil liberties to

accomplish the dual goals of preventing future attacks and maintaining our commitment to the U.S.

Constitution This is a general point of the document, as well as speaking about the tension and the way

Americans cherish their liberties. This helped in my project for information from a legal view coming from

a law school.

John Smith channel, Lawrence G. Walters as speaker. Civil Liberty Issues After 9/11 June 21st,2013.

As clearly evident by the title of the video, this video discusses the issues that occurred after 9/11.

Lawrence G. Walters, the speaker, mentions security issues and privacy issues during the era of

terrorism. I used this video as a resource for additional information on the issues, and how to explain

those issues vividly.

Surveillance Under the USA PATRIOT Act December 10, 2010

This website speaks about many different things, involving the Patriot act. Some of the things mentioned

were the reason for the passing of the act, the region of increase for governmental power, and how it can

be seen as unconstitutional. I believe this information is viable due to the fact that it comes off of The

American Civil Liberties Union website. I used the information in this article basically for verification of

my claims, and general ideas.

This debate provides a great example of others views on the subject by having users provide their own

personal response based on their take in the poll. 21% of users claimed it is justifiable to violate certaincivil rights in the name of nation security, while the other 79% disagreed. This debate was used in order to

see others opinions of the subject.
