Unit Title: Recycle, Reduce, Reuse

Unit Rationale: Students need to learn how to recycle, so they can start helping to save our

environment at a young age. Starting to teach your children to recycle is a great idea because if

they grow up doing it, then they will most likely do it thought-out their whole lives

Goals: Students will identify and demonstrate ways to promote good health. This unit

incorporate different subjects and multiple ways students can recycle, reuse and reduce.

Extension of Lessons across the curriculum: This unit plan not only covers health standards but

it also covers writing and art standards.

Accommodations: Any student with an IEP or 504 plan will have modifications made to meet

the expectations of that student’s plan. Other students (ADHD) who are in need of

accommodations to the lesson will also have modifications made to meet the expectations of

the student.

Assessment: The instructor will use formative and summative assessments to assess the

objectives. Students will be assessed with teacher observation, worksheets, student

cooperation and collaboration.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

Determine solutions for encouraging recycling in their community.

ND Standards/Benchmarks Health 3.7.1: Identify ways to promote good health.

Materials/Resources/Equip. What is Recyclable? worksheet Recycle Match-Up worksheet Poster paper Pencils Markers, crayons, or colored pencils

Introduction/Modeling Anticipatory Set (5 minutes)

Ask students what they know about recycling. Talk about different ways people can recycle. Ask students what they recycle at home and at school. Explain that objects can go into three categories when

you need to get rid of them: trash, compost, objects that can be broken down and used in the soil, and recycling, which is generally glass, plastic, and paper that can be broken down and made into new items.

Guided Practice (15 minutes)

Pass out the What is Recyclable worksheet.

Read the worksheet together as a class. Allow students to color the worksheet. Have student cut out the "stickers" on the worksheet

and glue them on the correct objects. Have a class discussion on ways to help people become

aware of recycling and how to recycle appropriately. These ideas may include educating people, putting up posters, coming up with incentives, and making recycling more convenient.

Independent Practice (15 minutes)

Pass out the Recycle Match-Up worksheet and allow

students to complete it. Have students partner up and make an awareness

poster about recycling. When students are done with their posters, encourage

them to hang them up around the school or in their community

Assessment

Students will be assessed by the completion of their worksheets and the effort put into the posters they have created.

Closure/Wrap Up (5 minutes)

Have students share their posters with the rest of the

class.

Explain that we recycle to save the earth by reusing our waste to limit our dependence on Earth's resources.

Explain to your students that recycling occurs in three steps. The first step is to collect and sort goods. Ask your students if they have a recycling bin at home. Ask your students what some items are that they put in the recycling bin. Record the answers on the board.

Tell your students that the second step in recycling is manufacturing. Explain to your students that once the objects are collected and sorted, they are used to create new objects!

Tell your students that the final step in recycling is selling! Tell your students that once the objects are manufactured, they are sold in stores.

Guided Practice (20 minutes)

Give your student the Create an Item worksheet to

create an item out of a recyclable item. Ask each student to pick one item that they would like

to create from the Create an Item worksheet. Have the students partner up with another who wants to do the same creation.

Give your students the appropriate materials to create the item they picked.

Create a Vase Step 1- Wrap the bottle in wrapping paper.

Step 2- Cut out the wrapping paper required to cover the

bottle.

Step 3- Stick the wrapping over the entire bottle to cover it.

Step 4- Create designs using construction paper, markers, and

colored pencils to stick on the wrapping paper.

Step 5- Place the flowers inside the bottle.

Day 3

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

Share their ideas about helping the Earth visually, verbally, and in writing.

ND Standards/Benchmarks Health 3.7.1: Identify ways to promote good health.

Materials/Resources/Equip. White construction paper Permanent markers Pencils Large piece of white paper Globe or map of the world Coloring utensils Computer Speakers Projector

Introduction/Modeling Anticipatory Set (10 minutes)

Gather the students together in a large circle. Place a globe or a map in the center of the circle. Explain to the students that today they will be

exploring ways they can keep the Earth healthy and happy.

Explain to them that although people know it is important to keep the Earth healthy and happy, many people still hurt the Earth without even knowing it.

Explain to the students that you are going to have a sharing circle. In the sharing circle, each student will share his thought with the classroom. Start by saying: People hurt the Earth by _____. Ideas include

Page 11: Annmarie Decoteau · 2018-04-24 · Lesson Plan Input-----Process-----Output Subject: Health Grade Level: 3rd Teacher: Annmarie Decoteau Date: 5/1/17-5/5/17 Read the worksheet together

polluting the land, polluting the water, littering, buying too many things, using too much plastic, using too much energy, cutting down trees, etc.

Allow the students sufficient time to share their ideas. If a student struggles to think of an idea, help him

come up with an idea

Guided Practice (15 minutes)

Ask students to head back to their seats. Tape up the large piece of paper on the whiteboard. Make three columns on the paper. Write the

words Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse on the top of each column.

Ask the students what the word reduce means. Allow students to share a few ideas, and make sure students understand that reduce means to make something smaller, or less in amount. Explain to the students that when we reduce the amount of water we use, trash we make, or the pollution in the air, that we are helping the Earth.

Under the word Reduce, write a few examples of how people can reduce. Examples include: I can take shorter showers, I can use less plastic, I can ride my bike to school, and I can turn off the lights when I’m not using them.

Ask the students what the word recycle means. Remind them that recycling is a process that changes waste to useful materials. Explain to the students that some paper, glass, cardboard, tin cans, and plastics can be recycled.

Under the word Recycle, write a few examples of how people can recycle. Examples include: I can keep a recycle bin in my classroom, I can recycle my bottles, and I can recycle at my house.

Ask the students what the word reuse means. Allow students to share a few ideas and make sure students understand that reusing is a process where someone reuses an item that has already belonged to someone else or was used in a different way.

Under the word Reuse, write a few examples of how people can reuse. Examples include: I can give my toys to someone else, I can give my clothing to someone else, I can make art out of used items, and I can use old glass bottles to hold pens and pencils.

Explain to the students that today they will have a chance to give the planet a hand

Independent Practice (15 minutes)

Get out one of the white pieces of construction paper. Stretch out your hand on the paper and trace your

hand on the construction paper with a pencil. Next, go over the hand with a permanent marker.

Explain to the students that they will need to come up with five ways they can help the planet and write them on each finger.

Ask a student to come up with a way he can help the Earth. Write his idea down on one of the fingers. Continue this process until each of the fingers has a sentence written in it.

Explain to the students that when they are finished with their ideas, they can draw pictures and decorate their traced hands.

Pass out the white construction paper, pencils, and coloring utensils.

Allow the students to get started. Rotate around and assist students who need help

tracing their hands. Encourage students to look up at the chart in front of

the classroom as a reference.

(15 minutes) Distribute a set of the Ecology Word and Meaning cards to each student.

Give students a few minutes to try to pair each word with its corresponding definition.

Display your set of word cards in the left-hand column of a pocket chart or bulletin board.

Invite volunteers to guess which meaning cards belong with which word cards.

As you discuss their responses, place the meaning cards next to the correct corresponding word cards on the chart.

Reinforce the concepts by encouraging students to brainstorm ideas of how they can reduce, reuse, recycle and conserve our resources to help the environment. Tie in messages from the book to help apply these concepts.

Independent Practice (20 minutes)

1. Divide the class into small groups of four to five students and provide each group with a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! graphic organizer.

2. Assign each group one of the ecology vocabulary words and challenge students to learn more about it. (You can use the ecology word cards or challenge students to think of additional terms.) Have students work together and use classroom resources (e.g., library books, textbooks, dictionary, computer, etc.) to research their term and how it impacts the community. For example, they can find out how recycling newspapers and bottles helps decrease the waste in landfills.

3. Instruct students to fill out their graphic organizers as they find examples of their term and how it is used.

4. Challenge students to create a rap or chant to teach the class about their ecology word. Have them write it on their organizer. Encourage students to add a visual prop. (For example, they can bring in a picture of a rain forest for “environment.”)
