The 160th Anniversary of the Signing of Washington Hebrew Congregation’s Congressional Charter

On June 2, 1856, President Franklin Pierce signed into law

“An Act for the Benefit of the Hebrew Congregation in the City of Washing-ton.” Serving as the charter for Wash-ington Hebrew Congregation, the act conferred all the “rights, privileges, and immunities heretofore granted by law to the Christian churches…to the Hebrew congregation of said city.”

This June, at our Annual Meeting, Washington Hebrew Congregation will celebrate the 160th anniversary of the signing of our Congressional charter. To help mark this special occasion, William H. Davis, archivist at the U.S. National Archives’ Center for Legislative Archives and WHC member, has shared copies of original records from the National Archives, which document the efforts and ac-

tions that resulted in the creation of Washington Hebrew Congregation’s charter.

Washington Hebrew Congregation — the first Jewish religious institution in the nation’s capital — was founded in 1852. In 1856, WHC members petitioned Congress for a congres-sional charter because the laws of the District of Columbia did not contain provisions permitting Jewish religious organizations the right to “be consti-tuted a congregation, having power to purchase and hold for their com-mon use and religious exercise a place of worship or other real estate….”

Senator and presidential aspirant Lewis Cass of Michigan enthusias-tically introduced the petition on February 5, 1856 in a moving speech that criticized prejudice against the

musical career and will star in a cabaret-style evening of sto-ry and song at Temple on Sunday, June 5 at 6:00 pm. The Amram Scholar Series is sponsoring this special, celebratory program as its season finale.

of the Irene and Abe Pollin Music Program Initia-tive concludes on Friday, June 10 with a very special 6:00 pm service at Temple, Hanefesh Shel Shabbat (The Soul of Shabbat), followed by a congregation-al dinner hosted by the Boomers and Kol Rinah.

The prayer leaders of Nava Tehila Jewish Renewal Congregation in Jerusalem will take us on a musical Kabbalat Shabbat journey at Temple on Friday, May 27 at 6:00 pm for the next Irene & Abe Pollin Music Program Initiative service.

Nava Tehila’s original melodies — celebratory, meditative, joyful, and reflective — are rooted in Middle East-ern, Hasidic, contemporary Israeli, and world music. They will weave a service of

chants, prayers, psalms, and hymns that will connect to your spirit, lift your head, and uplift your soul.

Visit our website, whctemple.org/Pollin, to familiarize yourself with Nava Tehila’s melodies and enhance your May 27 Shabbat experience!

164th Annual Meeting of the CongregationEach year in June, Washington Hebrew

Congregation’s members, lay leaders, and clergy gather for the Temple’s Annual Meet-ing. This year’s meeting on Thursday, June 2 at 7:30 pm will, after a vote by the Congrega-tion, feature the installation of the Temple’s officers, who will serve two-year terms; cur-rent Board members, who are beginning their second terms; and new directors, who are beginning their service on WHC’s Board.

The proposed 2016–2018 Executive Committee includes David Astrove – Presi-dent; Nell Shapiro – First Vice President; Mark Director – Vice President; Richard Newman – Vice President; Jeff Weiss – Vice President; Andy Marks – Treasurer; Carrie Coonin – Assistant Treasurer; Janet Katz – Secretary; Deborah Goldman – Assistant Secretary; and Lewis Wiener – General Counsel. Current Board members who have been re-nominated include Lynn Sachs, who will serve a three-year term from 2016 to 2019, and several directors who served partial terms prior to their 2013–2016 term: Joan Adoff and Richard Sussman, who will serve one-year terms from 2016 to 2017; and Cathy Scheineson, who will serve a two-year term from 2016 to 2018. Joining the Board of Directors for the first time are Sharon Dan, Diane Cutler Green, Andrew Lazerow, Bill Miller, Steve Robins, Melissa Schwartz, and Aaron Stopak, who will serve three-year terms from 2016 to 2019; and Susan Gerson, who will serve a two-year term from 2016 to 2018.

In addition to the Board installation, the Congregation will also hear from in-coming and outgoing Presidents and the Treasurer on the state of the Temple, and will recognize the work of officers Meg Flax – President, Jim Klein – Vice Presi-dent, and Faye Levin – Secretary; and directors Daniel Caplan, Sherri Gottlieb, Daniel Kohl, Susan Rosenblum, Jim Salander, and Josh Weinberg, whose service on the Board of Directors is coming to an end.

A dessert reception will follow the Annual Meeting. We hope you will join us for this very special evening.

Celebrate LGBT Pride with WHC at the Capital Pride Parade

Join Rabbi Shankman and your extend-ed WHC family when we march behind the Washington Hebrew Congregation banner alongside the Religious Action Center (RAC) at this year’s Capital

Pride Parade on Saturday, June 11. The Parade is the District’s largest, liveliest festival where thousands come together to celebrate the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community. It travels 1 ½ miles through Dupont Circle and 17th Street, passes by the Logan Circle neighborhood, and ends along the revi-talized 14th Street corridor at S Street.

We will meet at the RAC (2027 Massachusetts Avenue NW) at 3:00 pm for a short prayer rally, sign making, and refreshments before heading to the parade as a group.

The Reform Movement and WHC have advocated for LGBT rights since the mid-1960s. As a Congregation, we

support civil marriage, the elimination of discrimination in the Armed Forces and Boy Scouts, and explicit workplace non-discrimination and civil rights legislation.

Marching in the Capital Pride Parade is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate our community’s deep, long-held support for LGBT rights. Bring your friends and family — and show your Pride by wearing your loud-est, most colorful outfit! If you can join us, please register online at whctemple.org/PrideParade.

Rising 8th through 12th grade students are invited to spend a week this summer as a Motzi Fellow: working on an ac-tive farm whose vegetables are designated for local shelters; participating in social action projects; learning about the connection between poverty, food instability, and economic justice; and laughing, bonding, reflecting, and growing with a great group.

Mornings and early afternoons are spent on One Acre Farm; mid-afternoons are at home, so Fellows can clean up and rest; and evenings bring the group back together for dinner and inspiring social justice programming that ends by 8:30. The teens sleep at home. We offer The Motzi Fellowship twice during the summer: June 20-24 and July 18-22. The cost for each week is $500 for WHC members and $600 for non-members. For more information and to register, please visit whctemple.org/MotziFellowship.

Jonathan Comisar, an award-winning pianist and composer. Bob has loved music since childhood and played accordion and clarinet. His passion for Jewish music was kindled when he began singing with Kol Rinah 20 years ago, under Cantor Manevich’s direction. Weekly practices and regular performances gave Bob, a tax attorney by day, an opportunity to explore the deeper meanings of Shabbat prayers. Over 15 years, he developed tunes that came to him into new music and English lyrics for 10 prayers and three original songs, which evolved into Hanefesh Shel Shabbat.

The service is spiritual, lively, and contemplative. The music of each prayer reflects its inner meaning and feeling. “I wrote Mi Chamocha, the song the Hebrews sang at the Red Sea in Exodus, to celebrate the triumph over slavery and the joy of new-found freedom. So it is high-energy, and fast,” Bob said. “The Sh’ma begins slowly then builds to a beautiful cre-scendo; the meditation is soulful and contemplative.” Hanefesh Shel Shabbat also offers a “sermon in song.” Bob’s daughter’s confirmation inspired one song, “What Do You Ask of Me?” — a musical debate between a Jewish young adult and God, in which the young person questions beliefs and wrestles with the demands of faith.

The service will highlight the artists who helped bring Hanefesh Shel Shabbat to life: Cantors Manevich and Bort-nick, and David Lang, conductor and artistic director of the Reston Chorale. It will also feature a combined choir of WHC’s Kol Rinah and the Reston Chorale. Cantor Jonathan Comisar will accompany on piano and conduct a musical ensemble that includes cello, woodwinds, and percussion.

After the service, please join us for a celebratory congregational dinner. The cost is $26 per person and reservations may be made online at whctemple.org/Pollin.

Congressional Charter (continued from page 1)

“faith of the patriarchs and prophets of Israel.” The petition was referred to the Senate Committee on the District of Columbia. Senator Albert Gallatin Brown of Mississippi, Chairman of the committee, reported favorably on the petition and introduced Senate Bill 199.

Although an 1844 act had con-ferred powers and rights on religious bodies “without restriction as to sect,” the Congregation felt a charter was warranted to resolve any doubts about our right to build a house of worship and operate a congregation. Both houses of Congress and President Pierce agreed, and S. 199 became law.

The exhibit, featuring items from the National Archives, is on display at Temple in the case nearest Kreeger Lobby.

WHC News

Join us for drinks and hors d’oeuvres as Katz recounts tales from his memoir — Blood, Sweat, and My Rock ‘n’ Roll Years: Is Steve Katz a Rock Star? — which Judy Collins has described as “a dizzying, delicious, head-spinning, heart-wrenching tale of the Sixties.” Guitar in hand, Katz will musically illustrate his tales with sev-eral of the hit songs that sold millions and earned Blood, Sweat & Tears three Grammys, including one that edged out The Beatles’ “Abbey Road” for Al-bum of the Year in 1968. Among the band’s singles that ruled for months at the top of the charts were “Spin-ning Wheel,” “And When I Die,” and “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy.”

Born in Brooklyn in 1945, Katz says he was “a nice Jewish boy with beatnik tendencies,” who went on to study guitar with Dave Van Ronk and flourished in the dynamic musi-cal scene of Greenwich Village, along with such folk and rock legends as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, and Judy Collins. He later toured the world with Blood, Sweat & Tears and played the biggest pop music festivals of the time, before leaving the band to work as a producer for Lou Reed.

Our evening with Steve Katz, organized through the Jewish Book Council, is presented free of charge, but reservations are requested. Register online at whctemple.org/Amram. For further information, please contact Layne Weiss, [email protected] or 202-895-6307.

WHC Books Presents an Evening of Leonard Bernstein Cantor Mikhail Manevich will

join WHC Books at Temple for the closing program for 2015-2016 on Tuesday, June 28 at 7:00 pm. The evening, which will begin with a light supper, highlights iconic American composer Leonard Bernstein and will include songs led by Cantor Manevich

and a group reading of a play about Bernstein’s life and the impact his Jewish upbringing had on his music and career.

All are welcome! There is no charge for dinner, but reservations are re-quired. RSVP to Ellen Share, [email protected] or 301-354-3212.

WHC is here for you at every stage of the life cycle. Now, we’re inviting you to help sustain our Congregation by participating in Yad B’Yad, the WHC Annual Fund, co-chaired by Past Presi-dents Sherry Bindeman Kahn and Bob Shapiro. Yad B’Yad helps bridge the gap between our Congregation’s revenues and operating expenses, supporting our exceptional programming and keeping membership open to all, regardless of ability to pay.

When we gather to worship, study, draw comfort from clergy, launch our children on their Jewish journeys, or mark festive milestones, Yad B’Yad helps make these experiences possible. All gifts are tax-deductible and will be recognized in the 2015-2016 Annual Report. Donors at the leadership level of $1,000 and above will be invited to a special Shabbat dinner in a member’s home. Make your tax-deductible gift online, whctemple.org/giving, or contact Miriam Feffer, [email protected] or 202-895-6312.
