Wollongong since 1952?
Bishop Thomas McCabe Bishop William Murray Archbishop Philip Wilson Bishop Peter Ingham
Bishop Thomas McCabe ( 1952-1975)
Born in South West Rocks, NSW in 1902
His motto was “In omnibus caritas” –
In all things, charity(St Augustine d.430)
The first Bishop of the newly formed Diocese of Wollongong
He had been Bishop of Port Pirie in South Australia (1938-1951) before coming to Wollongong
His was the mammoth task to establish an identity for this new Diocese, made
up of parishes formerly in the Archdiocese of Sydney and
Canberra/Goulburn.He is remembered as “a humble, prayerful and pastoral Bishop”. The Catholic Church in the Illawarra 150 years
Born in Leichhardt in 1920, retired in 1996 as Bishop.
His motto was ‘Per Justitiam Pax’ –
Peace through Justice.
Bishop William Murray (1975-1996)
Rector of Springwood seminary before becoming Bishop and had a strong academic background in Social Justice
•Expansion of the Diocese featured strongly under Bishop Murray.
•New parishes were formed as the Catholic community expanded
• New Catholic schools and the Catholic Education Office established
• Developed Centacare Catholic welfare services (now CatholicCare) • Hosted The Marian Congress
Bishop Philip Wilson (1996-2001)
• Hosted a major national event – the Eucharistic Congress in 2000 in the Jubilee Year
• Tackled the sexual abuse issues through the national process called ‘Towards Healing’, set up by the Australian Catholic Bishops
• He established the Compeer program , with SVDP and CatholicCare, for people with mental illness
• Established the annual Marriage Anniversaries Mass
• Led a group to the 12th WYD in Paris, strong connection with children and youth
• Currently Archbishop of Adelaide and President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference.
Some highlights include:Became the youngest Bishop in Australia (Born 1950 in Cessnock, NSW).
His motto is Non Nobis Domine

Bishop Peter Ingham (2011- present)Formerly Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney (1993 – 2001)
• Led the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of the Diocese in 2002
• Accompanied young people to WYD in Toronto (2002), Cologne (2005), Sydney (2008) and Madrid (2011) and hosted World Youth Day ‘Days in the Diocese’ welcoming overseas pilgrims to the Wollongong Diocese
• Appointed a Disabilities Advocate and Aged Care Advocate
• Embraced the planning for the new demographics of the Diocese – one of the fastest growing in the State
• Initiated a 5 Year Pastoral Plan to meet the needs of the Diocese and take it into the future
• Strong pastoral outreach, aiming to put fresh heart into the People of God and encouragement to persevere in the faith
• Building community, ecumenical and inter-faith relationships
Born in Sydney in 1941
His motto is ‘per ipsum ipsa duce’ – meaning ‘through him, herself leading’Refers to the doxology of the Eucharistic prayer, and to the Blessed Virgin Mary
