A SHERIFF FOR BIG RO
It was a peaceful sunny day in Big Rock,
as Barney Carbon rode wildly down Main
Street, drew to a halt in front of the Sheriff's
office, jumped off his horse, and raced inside.
"Sheriff!" he called. "Sheriff!"
Barney looked around in bewilderment.
The place was deserted. He turned and ran
outside. Across the dirt road, sitting in the
shade of the General Store, an old man
squinted sleepily at him.
Barney dashed across the road and cried.
"Where's the Sheriff?"
The old man drawled, '"Gone."
"Where?" Barney demanded.
The old man shrugged. "Don't know."
"When will he be back?"
"Don't reckon he ever will!"
Barney was getting exasperated.
The old man grinned. "You're a stranger
around these parts. I've lived in Big Hock
for the last twenty years, and there hasn't
ever been a Sheriff that stayed longer than
six months' It's just too darn peaceful in this
town, and these Sheriff fellers just can't
stand it! Nothing ever happens!"
"You mean you don't have a Sheriff?"
Barney asked in disbelief.
"That's right," the old man replied. "At
least, not for the last three days!"
Barney groaned. "But . . . but ..." he stam-
mered. "I just saw a couple of men cutting'
through a barbed wire fence, and they looked
like they were fixing to rustle some cattle!"
The old man jumped up, and cried, "Hot
diggety! That's the first real excitement we've
had around here in twenty years!"
"But I don't like that kind of excitement,"
Barney protested. "I've got to find a sheriff!"
"Son," the old man said. "Like I said, there
isn't any sheriff and I'm too old to ride after
the varmints— you'll ha^e to go back and
catch them!"
"But ..." Barney protested. Then he
shrugged helplessly. The old man was right.
There was no time to spare, so he would
have to do it himself.
Barney turned abruptly, ran to his horse,
jumped into the saddle, and galloped off in
the direction from which he had come.
Ten minutes later, Barney reached the spot
where he had seen the men cutting the wire.
There was no question about it now— the
men had been nistlers. There were so manytracks on the ground, it was-plain that cattle
had been run out of the opening in the fence.
Barney followed the tracks. In half an hour
he came upon the missing cattle in a small
gully. The two rustlers were crouched over
one steer, busily changing the brand.
Slipping his gun out of his holster, Barney
rode quietly up behind the rustlers.
"All right, you two!" Barney said, "Put
your hands high over your heads!"
It was almost an hour later that Barney,
with his two prisoners riding ahead of him,
leisurely returned to Big Rock.
The old man was still sitting in front of
the store, but now there were quite a few
townspeople gathered around him.
As Barney took his prisoners into the jail
and locked them in the cell, the old mangot up and crossed the street, followed
closely by the local citizens.
The old man entered the Sheriff's office
and grinned at Barney. "Well done, stranger!
Now, if you'll just look in the top drawer
of that desk, you'll fin3 a badge there!"
"What do you mean?" Barney asked.
"1 mean, son, that as Mayor of Big Rock,
I hereby appoint you Sheriff of Big Rock!"
Barney walked over to the desk_and
opened the drawer. Picking up the badge,
he said, "I got a good notion to accept!."
f Barney pinned the Badge on his shirt, sat
down, put his feet up on the desk, and said,
"Yes, sir, if there's one thing I like, it's peace
and quiet! And if this town is anything like
you say, I may never leave!"

Read why DAISY
is the RIGHT GUNFor EARLY TRAINING and FUN . ,
Since 1888 Daisy Air Rifles have used the same safer
spring-type action—the safer short range— the safer
low "factory limited" power! Today Daisys are ap-
proved for the marksmanship programs of National
Rifle Association, the Boy Scouts of America. Today
Daisys are used in schools, camp3, air rifle clubs and
homes to teach proper gun handling faster, more safely,
more economically. Daisy is the accepted "first" gun.
Many Dads enjoy using the Daisy for inexpensive
home target practice. Daisy shooting is also F-TJ-N for
the whole family—fromseven
toseventy years old!
Buy your junior a Daisy and teach safety through
skill. See Daisy Air Rifles on display today at your
favorite hardware, sports goods or department store.

OTHER DAISY TRAINING ADVANTAGESIi's easy and fun to train juniors with a famous Daisy
because: {1) the official NRA spring-type range is only
15 feet— shorter than your, auto; agarage or 20'
roomwill dcr, {2) store cartons filled up with old magazines
makeasafe backstop; (3) aDaisycostsas3ittleas$5.95;
[4) ammunition costs only 5f for about 125 shots.
