Annie Leibovitz

BiographyAnnie Leibovitz was born on

October 2,1949 in Waterbury,Connecticut. She attended the SanFrancisco Art Institute. Her workappears in The Rolling Stone andVanity Fair. She has also publishedin New York Times and in theSmithsonian American Art Museum.

Her style is mainly fashion. This styleis about taking pictures of famouspeople in very elegant or unusualclothing. Herni Cartier-Bresson andthe other Robert Franks inspired herto become a photographer. Anniephotographed John Lennon with YokoOno. 5 hours later, John Lennon wasshot and killed. She is credited fordefining ‘the intimate celebrity look’.

• Annie Leibovitz used artificial lighting inside of a building.Some of the light on the door could be from a window but thelight shining on Nicole Kidman are from the overhead lights.The light is coming from above the subject. I think the lightingadds to the visual appearance of the photo.

• The main subject of the photo is Nicole Kidman. I can tellbecause the title of the picture is Nicole Kidman and becausethe background is either washed out from the light or just onthe edges of the photo.

• The composition of the photo would be to have the subjectstand in just the perfect place and position so that the lightsshine directly on her. Then cut out enough of the backgroundso that you can tell what the subject of the photo is.

• I think the photographer is trying to show how beautiful hersubject is by having her wear the elegant dress. I also thinkshe had her look away to make it look more dramatic.

• I chose this picture because it stood out to me the most on theinternet. What really caught my eye was the lighting of thepicture.

• The main subject of the photo is the lady laying on the couch. I cantell because everything else is plain.

• The composition is having her lay sloppily on the couch. It is agood photo because the lighting casts shadows on her that makes itmore appealing.

• I think Annie Leibovitz is trying to show how exhausting life canbe.

• I picked this picture because I can relate to it. I lay on my couchlike that all the time.

• The composition of the photo makes it strikingbecause the mother playing in the sand with herchild portrays the love she has for her baby.

• I think she is trying to show the love the mother hasfor her baby.

• I picked this picture because I love little kids andbabies.

• Natural light was used in this picture because thebike is outside. The light is coming from the sun.

• The main subject is the bike. I know because of thetitle and the rest of the photo is the asphalt.

• The composition of the photo is striking because ofthe blood on the ground and the way the bike is justknocked over.

• The photographer is trying to show that the teenageboy was riding his bike when he was killed.

• I chose this picture because when I read the title myheart instantly sunk and I felt sympathy for theteenager.

Emmylou Harris, Franklin, Tennessee, 2001

• The lighting is natural light because she’s standing in amuddy area. The light is coming from above her.

• The main subject is Emmylou Harris. I know because hername is the title and she’s the only important thing in thephoto.

• The composition works to make the photo so striking becausethe dirt road behind her leads your eyes to her. You can alsotell she likes music.

• I think the photographer is trying to show that EmmylouHarris’ passion for her music because she is holding herguitar.

• I chose this picture because I like the sound of the guitar andI am learning to play it.
