I was lucky enough to try the brilliant Minx nails

courtesy of Elysium in Grantham.

Sparkly metallics, personalized graphics and photo-quality designs currently unavailable in

the market make up the Minx nail line. Made of flexible film, Minx finally gives women completely customized nails that can feature the exact pattern and colors of their newest gown, their favorite photo, or that season’s hottest designs. Minx nails have become the latest must have fashion accessory for the celebs, being worn by names such as Victoria Beckham, Christina Aguillara, Rihanna and Beyonce to name but a

few.

“Minx is for those who love to stand out from the crowd,” declares Master Minx Janice Jordan. “For celebrities who wore Minx nails on the red carpet for the American Music Awards and the Music Rocks event, Minx opens up a whole new area of fashion. Once you’ve tried it, you can’t go back,” Jordan states.

What exactly are they?Minx is a solid film with an adhesive backing which is heat activated. The heat gives Minx the ability to fit over the curve of a nail, and seals the film onto the nail bed.

How long will they last? This depends on a range of factors but most wearers report them lasting upto two weeks.

‘I think a lot of what I do now is, in some way,

coloured by the experience I had with illness’

KYLIE MINOGUE aNd hEr prOdUcEr STUarT prIcE chaT aBOUT hEr NEw aLBUM, aphrOdITE

Congratulations Kylie, studio album number 11. How does that make you feel?

K: It is kind of unbelievable. I thought the tenth album, X, was a benchmark but this one has just been amazing. I wouldn’t care what number you called it. It’s been the most amazing experience.

This is your studio Stuart, is this where the album was recorded?

S: Essentially we finished the record here but the album was actually recorded over a couple of countries and a few studios; but we used this studio as a kind of base for everything. It was like the home of the record.K: Yeah, this is where everything came together.

Is this the spiritual home of the record?

K: Yeah… I think it is!S: I think it was important for us to make a record that sounded like it was a moment in

time, that came from the same place, from the same voice, from the same heart.K: The same time capsuleS: Yeah - this was the time capsule. Having it all in one spot just gave it the cohesive sound that we wanted from the start.

I guess you need that cohesive sound on an album?

K: Well for me this was a first, to have an Executive Producer. It was just the best experience, and funnily enough I think it’s the most cohesive album I’ve had since the beginning of my career, back in the PWL days, where by its very nature made it cohesive. There’s a lot to be said for working with different producers and trying different stuff which has worked really well for me in the past but I definitely wanted someone to tie this together as Stuart has done so beautifully ... so that it existed as a real body of work. >

september 2010 anne louise | 21

Page 22: Anne Louise Magazine

What was it about this album and this project that made you want to do it differently to before?

K: The idea (to do it differently) was at the forefront of my mind on this album because I’d had a little niggle with the previous two albums. But the added reason that all of this came around was because of our dear friend Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters, who was working in this very studio, as I had started recording my album in various studios around the world. He praised Stuart highly and loves me dearly, and basically pestered me and said “you’ve got to do this, it’ll be so amazing!”, so I’ve got much to thank Jake for.

Do you regard this album as a return to the dance floor? Or did you never leave?

K: Uh, it’s been described as a return to the dance floor; I don’t think I ever totally left but it is a return to form I’d say.S: Maybe you were in the “chillout room” for a while.K: Maybe. In one room or the other, but now you walk in the door and there it is.

Was there any point whilst recording the album when you thought ‘yeah, this is it’?

S: A lot of making any record, I think, is about staring into the abyss of nothing - and you just have ideas or you have some songs, and you look at it and you say “what is this?” or “does this mean anything yet?” and then you have a moment where all of a sudden the penny drops and it clicks. We had a session where we’d started writing some stuff for New York, and it’s funny at the start, because there’s a make or break sort of attitude to it, where I think you have to make it work. So there was definitely a significant moment there. We had Barbarella on; the first song we did was about angels; and I think there was a seed of an idea of what the record could become at that point. Then I think it really suggested the direction of the record, and at that point we could start sewing everything together to use as the basis of the album. So it’s like the idea of the doors swinging open at a nightclub and you come in; but you have to create this world with this talk of angels, etc. K: That was the first song we wrote together, we had our notebooks at the ready; yours was a very special one and mine was from the 99cent store! One of the titles was ‘Angel’ and Stuart asked me “have you ever had a song called Angel?” I literally had to think back because one would imagine I had done so, but no, we hadn’t. So that was our first song; in a tiny little studio in New York, very compact. It was nice.

What about the tracks themselves, were there an excess number of tracks? And how did you pull them together?

K: Hmm yes, there was! Trying to decide which tracks made it needs a highly technical device which you find in studios like this - the whiteboard.

S: There wasn’t really an excess of tracks because we were always conscious to evaluate stuff and say “is this right or is this wrong”K: There reached a turning point where we said “ok no more writing – let’s just focus on what we’ve got”S: There were ‘diamonds in the rough’ and there were things which felt like they should probably never have worked, but we would look at stuff again and say “well that wasn’t really happening last week but let’s try it again and change the style of the song”. Again that was the (advantage of) having everything here. We could open stuff back up and put it on the operating table.K: We had that freedom to bring the song back that we felt like doing that day.

Looking For An Angel, Cupid, Aphrodite… Do you think there’s a celestial feel to the album?

K: There is something of a celestial feel throughout the album, definitely not on every track but I think we tapped into that, on the first song we did together ‘Looking For An Angel’. Personally, I’m always attracted to those ethereal, starry, universal ideas S: Maybe because you are one! Just throwing it out there .. everyone’s thinking it .. I’m just saying it!K: Thanks! What does that make this place? If I’m a star then you must be in my cosmos.S: Recorded in Heaven.K: Does it get any better than that?! Actually, it was like it was recorded in Heaven.S: A song that was done really early on was Looking For An Angel, it was the first thing we did together - but the two other songs: Aphrodite and Cupid Boy - Aphrodite Kylie did with Nerina Pallot and Cupid Boy was done with Luciano and the Swedish House Mafia. I think it’s a good way of illustrating that, of the songs on the record there’s stuff that Kylie wrote and stuff she wrote with other people. It shows that songs were selected because they fit into the blueprint of the record. Songs would come in or we’d hear something and it would have a resonance with the rest of the record. At that point it’s almost like there’s no way it couldn’t have been on the record. It was as if everyone was there at that time and was part of the same thing. And I think that’s a good example there, Aphrodite, Cupid Boy, Looking For An Angel, all songs written by combinations of different teams but all sharing that unifying idea of the album. Of course Aphrodite went on to be the album title.

This is a much lighter album, was that some sort of reaction to the darker times that you had been through?

K: I think a lot of what I do now is, in some way, coloured by the experience I had with illness. I guess I was just feeling like expressing joy at this point, I’d written songs more about that period in my life either on or for the last album, so I didn’t feel like going through those again; this was about this moment, this time, and what a happy experience this has been for me.

22 | anne louise september 2010

Page 23: Anne Louise Magazine
Page 24: Anne Louise Magazine

After speaking about a theme, what’s your relationship with love at the moment?

K: Jeez! That’s a massive question! A lot of people question why so many pop songs are about love, why operas are so written, why paintings are painted, why we cry during really silly commercials. Love in all its various forms challenges us all the time and I guess you could say this was a little love affair with this album. I loved coming to work and I loved working with Stuart, I think that feeling comes through on the album.

What was the most fun that you had on the record?

S: Well what you probably can’t see is that by mine and Kylie’s feet there’s a little six foot square area that was designated the ‘dance zone’K: You guys are right in it! You feel some kind of movement?S: That was when you knew a song was right, and you knew that it was saying what we wanted to sayK: We’d both be listening in our own world and there’d be the point in the song when the hands would go up! Hands up - good reaction. And of course there was the “Dolly Parton Litmus Test” which I’ve got to tell you has travelled, I’ve been asked so much about that. S: It’s worked!K: Shall we tell that little story?S: You should yeah. That came from New York as well.K: It did! The soon to be trademarked and copyrighted “Dolly Parton Litmus Test” is a way of, testing a song’s viability as a song without production. He’d get his acoustic guitar out and we’d sing.S: Well it wasn’t quite singing it was more of a performance.K: True. S: Kylie does the best Dolly Parton impersonation there is on the planet, ever! We figured out that if that worked for any song, and we could see Dolly doing it; then on top of that we could sit down with a guitar and do it like that as well - the song was probably destined for good things. It became, as you say, a sort of litmus test for each song on the record. Subsequently it’s also gone on to be the thing that stays in your head - quite strongly as well!K: It does!S: And destined Kylie to do it at every dinner party she goes to from this point onwards to the end of time.K: Then as a celebration when it was my last day coming in here to wrap up a couple of things, I took it upon myself to get two of the cheapest, gnarliest, got-nothing-to-do-with-a-natural-fibre-at-all outfits - cowboy and cowgirl. One was couriered here earlier in the day with a message - I can’t remember what I wrote - but just reading it you could tell it was in ‘that accent y’all!’ S: It mentioned grits in it somewhere as well.K: It did mention grits. So by the time I got here later in the day, I did a quick change at the entrance and walked in to find my “cowboy” with Kenny Rogers blasting out of the stereo, then I came in and punched out a good old rendition of ‘Yeeeeeha!’ with All The Lowers, in “Dolly Parton Litmus Test” style. S: We got the baked beans on the fire for that one!

K: That was one of our most fun moments.

Was this one of the most fun albums you’ve ever made then?

K: Yep. Without a doubt!

Wedding planner and designer Zoe Lingard shares her tips on creating a wedding on a budget. www.zoelingard.co.uk

“Hi there, my name is Zoë and I’m the managing director of Weddings by Zoë Lingard, a London based wedding planning company. Weddings by Zoë Lingard was born from a passion for beautiful, seamless weddings. Having attended countless celebrations that didn’t quite fulfil their potential and whose bride and groom arrived at the alter stressed out and tired, we knew that a new approach was long overdue.

At Weddings by Zoë Lingard, we believe that a wedding should always be personalised and never generic. We believe guests should never be hungry, transitions should always be smooth and evening entertainment so good, guests simply can’t stop dancing. We believe the details really do matter and that above all, guests should leave your wedding feeling like they know you that little bit better.”

Instead of buying expensive favours that usually get left behind by guests, use your favour budget to create a Candy Bar. Simply fill glass containers hired from your florist with colour coordinated sweeties (available from all good cash and carries). Add paper bags, two or three scoops and invite guests to help themselves. Not only does this create a fabulous focal point, it also means you can cut back on expensive evening food.

Etsy.com is a fabulous website filled with a vast array of stylish handmade goodies often at unbeatable prices. You’ll

Don’t assume your dress has to be new. Today, there are lots of online stores such as oncewed.com or sellmyweddingdress.co.uk when you can pick up previously worn designer gowns for a fraction of the original price. This way you can get the dress of your dreams for a fraction of the cost.

Be ruthless with your guest list and keep total numbers down. The biggest expense within most wedding budgets is food and drink and by reducing your headcount you can save significant amounts.

Homegrown flowers and plants make great alternatives to traditional floral arrangements. Grow them ahead of time to make sure they look healthy and established for the wedding and pot them up into attractive containers.

Not only does this reduce your budget but you’ll also get a great keepsake for after the wedding. When planning your floral arrangements, consider whether you can use each one several times. For example, an alter arrangement can be reused on the top table and later placed somewhere such as a fireplace; making an expensive piece go a long way.

Manage your timings so that things start later in the day. This way you can avoid feeding guests twice and there is less time to fill with expensive drinks and canapés.

To add a little luxury to some budget friendly invitations, make your own envelope liners. Simply buy a paper rounder (available from most craft stores) and some pretty paper and paste into your envelopes.

Look for a venue that can only just accommodate your guest numbers, that way you’re not wasting money paying for space you don’t use.

Friendships naturally wax and wane, but the cosmos is urging you not to neglect people who matter. Why not pick up the phone and arrange to meet an old friend for lunch? The end of the month sees you in a reflective frame of mind, but don’t get bogged down in nostalgia.

This is a month where escaping the rigours of reality and the daily humdrum are going to have a magnetic pull on you. By all means indulge a little, but don’t go to town. The big news, however, is the entry of the sun to your sign later on in the month, as this is when the real fun begins.

If you’re a bit fed up at work, you’ll find the wherewithal to start looking for something a bit more suitable. Your steely determination to succeed is bolstered by this month’s cosmic activity, so you really can’t lose. The final week of the month sees you on fire socially.

Psychic astrologer Jason Caddy brings you your monthly horoscopesHOROSCOPESAries21 Mar - 21 April

Taurus22 April - 21 May

Gemini21 May- 20 June

Cancer22 June - 23 July

Leo24 July - 23 Aug

Virgo24 Aug - 23 Sept

You’ve been happy to let things tick along at work while knowing all along that you’d eventually have to shake things up. This time has come. You have been born under a sign with much potential and this is the month to talk in future tenses and broaden your vision.

Any obstacles you are faced with this month shouldn’t get the better of you as your steely determination kicks in from the get go. Your creativity is also in full flow and you can pretty much rely on it to get you out of any sticky situations that may arise at work.

If simmering family tensions boil over this month, you could be called on to mediate because of your uncanny ability to pour oil on troubled waters. Any discord will eventually give way to a sociable time, where you’ll be in demand for being an all round good egg.

Gossip and scandal are in the air and a piece of information may reach your ears concerning someone close to you. Don’t be too quick off the mark to judge or condemn. There’s also a surprise in store on the home front, when a family member relies on your sympathetic ear.

The accent is firmly on finances, as the cosmos encourages you to get this house in order. This is not a time to bury your head in the sand. Come the end of the month, your persuasive powers will ensure that you’re able to win most people round to your way of thinking.

Get ready to be energised by the return of the sun to your sign. This is the time to make plans for the next twelve months and realise ambition. Don’t let wet blankets smother your dreams or thwart your aspirations, as the cosmos is backing you every inch of the way. Take a chance.

Be prepared for the veil to be lifted on secrets this month. You may discover something about someone that you thought you knew inside out, although this could bring you closer together once the dust has settled. Fortune favours your sign as the month winds down.

September brings with it a desire to make your life more fulfilling. Why not start donating a little to charity, begin a night class or, perhaps, just spend a little more time with the special people in your life? Paying attention to detail brings its own rewards at work, where you will naturally excel.

Lost your way in love lately? Take time this month to reconnect with your loved one, by simply making more time for them. Single Pisceans are likely to stumble across a lively type who makes a lasting impression. Question is will you let down your guard long enough to show him or her any encouragement?

PersonalTrainerYour monthly guide to Health & Fitness with Emma McDonald

Exercise & Pregnancy

There will be some days throughout your pregnancy when getting out of bed can be a huge effort, so exercise might seem out of the question. But staying fit and active has so many benefits during your pregnancy, labour and the through your postnatal recovery. Whether you were a

fitness fanatic before you got pregnant, or more of a couch potato, there are lots of easy ways to exercise safely with a bump.

Pregnancy can leave you feeling tired and lethargic, especially in the first and last trimesters. Try and exercise as little and often as possible to help

boost your energy levels, such as a brisk walk to work or the shops, a gentle morning swim, or a Pilates or Yoga class specifically for Pregnancy. This will

help you to feel healthy and energised and much more able to take on your daily tasks and chores (Boscaglia et al, 2003).

Your heart and lungs become stronger as you exercise, so you won’t

feel tired as easily. With muscles that are strong and toned, you’ll need less effort to do most things, whether you’re shopping for food or having a busy day in the office.

Top 5 Reasons To sTay acTive duRing youR pRegnancy

Boost your Energy Levels

Prepare for labour The better shape you’re in, the easier you’ll be able to cope with the birth of your baby. Giving birth is like running a marathon. It requires stamina, determination and focus. Staying active during pregnancy is good preparation for the hard work that lies ahead. Keeping up a routine of weight-bearing exercise, such as walking or low-impact aerobics, may help shorten your labour and ensure your baby’s birth goes smoothly (RCOG 2006, Hatch

et al 1998).

Help eliminate aches and pains Exercise stretches and strengthens the muscles in your ever changing

body, which helps you cope better with the aches and pains of pregnancy (Clapp 2002, Artal & Sherman 1999). Flexibility movements such as gentle

stretching may ease neck, shoulder and back pain, walking improves your circulation, and swimming can strengthen your tummy muscles and is a good alternative to walking if you suffer with swollen ankles. Being in the water takes any pressure off your joints making you feel weightless.

Get a good night’s sleep When you’re pregnant it can be challenge to find a comfortable position to sleep in. Keeping active will help you work off any excess energy, and will hopefully help you relax enough to lull you into a deeper, more restful sleep.

Boost your self-image Although you know it’s for a good cause, watching the scales slowly creep their way up to figures you’ve never seen before can be disheartening. Try to regard this phase in your life as one where you can be proud of your new pregnant shape. Staying active can help you feel better about your changing body (Boscaglia et al 2003). Also the fitter you stay during your pregnancy the easier you will find it to lose weight and tone up when your baby arrives.

Top Tips To ensure you exercise safely

Now we have established the benefits of staying fit and active during your pregnancy we need to ensure that the activities you do are not going to harm you or your baby, please read the following before you embark on your new pregnancy fitness regime :

- Talk to your midwife before starting an exercise programme - Stay cool and chose the right clothing to avoid “overheating”- Always warm up - Avoid laying on your back after the first trimester - Avoid overdoing it (don’t “go for the burn” or exercise to exhaustion)- Stop immediately if you feel uncomfortable or are in pain- Drink lots of water before, during, and after exercising - Get up from the floor slowly and carefully - Always cool down - Last but not least, if you are unsure about anything always talk to your GP or midwife and listen to your body. If you are attending the Gym or any Fitness classes always make sure your instructor is aware that you are pregnant, this will allow them to make the correct changes to your workout to ensure it is safe and effective.
