FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,

The 2013-14 season “Novo’s Ninth,” as

you can easily tell, marks my ninth as

Music Director of the Annapolis Symphony

Orchestra. As I’m reminded of the great

ninth symphonies of composers such as

Schubert, Beethoven, Mahler, and Bruckner, I believe the

humanistic and epic qualities of these masterpieces inspire our

extraordinary 2013-2014 season.

I am honored to once again share the stage with not only one of

the finest orchestras in the region, but also with several world-class

soloists. Such guest artists as Peter Serkin and Jon Nakamatsu will

be performing monumental piano concertos by Brahms and

Rachmaninov that will certainly touch your soul.

In November, we celebrate the centennial of the birth of Benjamin

Britten, one of the 20th century’s most imaginative composers. Add

in Ravel’s La Valse, Sibelius’ First Symphony, Mozart’s Linz Symphony,

Dvorák’s “Sixth,” and Bruckner’s “Seventh,” and with this cocktail

for the season, you’ll soon realize you won’t want to miss a note!

If you’re not an ASO subscriber, this is truly your chance to

subscribe and Experience It! First time subscribers receive 50%

off Lexus Classic Series subscriptions. Please join us and celebrate

the magic of music.

With joy,

José-Luis Novo

Music Director

CHRISTMAS IN ANNAPOLIS

Presented by PNC Wealth Management

José-Luis Novo, conductorFeaturing the hit vocal group Five By Design

Celebrate Christmas in Annapolis with the ASO and the outstanding vocal quintet, Five By Design, whose symphonic pops collaborations have delighted audiences for 20 years. The unforgettable melodies, signature harmonies, and lush vocals of this nationally-acclaimed ensemble will provide the perfect accompaniment to your holiday season.

Family ConcertFEBRUARY 8, 2014 · 2 & 3:30PM

THE LOST ELEPHANTJosé-Luis Novo, conductorFeaturing Dan Kamin

The Lost Elephant introduces children to the magical power of musical imagery. A zookeeper arrives during a concert of animal-inspired music looking for Elmer, the runaway elephant. He and the Maestro strike a bargain: the zookeeper will help the audience visualize the animals in music, and in return, the orchestra will set a musical trap to lure the elephant to the concert hall. Symphonic music becomes vivid and accessible to children in this simple but exciting story, set to the music of Handel, Rossini, Stravinsky, and other favorite composers. Family concerts are recommended for ages 4 & up.

Meet the Musicians at 1:15pm or 4:30pm.
