Michael Cranny School Council

Our 2016-2017 school council members are listed below. Thank you to all who came out to our last meeting!

Mary Tsaktsiris and Melissa Mouldey (Co-Chairs)

Didem Tekin (Secretary)

Xiaoyun Wu (Treasurer)

Sangeeta Agarwal

Charles Menezes

Our school council meeting for the month of January will take place on:

Wednesday, January 18th, 2017

Thank you in advance for supporting our school council and all are welcome to attend.

On Jan 12th & Jan 19th, 2107, our Grade 4 to 8 students are participating in our Annual Winter Wellness Days. Students have the opportunity to participate in the following fun winter events; Ski in Snow Valley: Go skiing at Snow Valley. Lessons, grouped according to skier ability, are mandatory. Colour-coded stripes restrict access to more difficult hills until proficiency has been tested. The instructors offer a well-organized programme that reflects a keen awareness of safe skiing practices to allow students to ski with their peers. Please ensure that you speak to your child about staying with a buddy for the day. Students are responsible for their own belongings; teachers and Snow Valley employees are not responsible for lost or stolen personal items. It is suggested that all technology remains at home, as this is a fun day to enjoy with their school community. Please note, technology cannot be kept in a secure location while at Snow Valley. Tubing and Snowshoeing at Snow Valley: This day is split into two winter favourites, tubing and snowshoeing. Half-day snow tube with lots of chutes and large lanes so you can go down along with your group of friends! The other half of the day you will learn to snowshoe while enjoying the winter landscape and all the fun of playing in the snow. Snowshoeing is a popular Canadian winter pastime in which participants wear specially designed gear on their feet which distributes their weight, allowing them to walk on snow without breaking through it. Students are responsible for their own belongings; teachers and Snow Valley employees are not responsible for lost or stolen personal items. It is suggested that all technology remains at home as this is a fun day to enjoy with their school community. Please note, tech-nology cannot be kept in a secure location while at Snow Valley. Striking Success: Richmond Hill Soccer Club Com es to Cranny! Michael Cranny hosts a 2 -day module of “Shooting Suc-cess”, a RHSC Grassroots Soccer program designed in accordance with the FIFA & OSA Grass Roots philosophy. Participants learn the fundamental skills of the game in a familiar, safe and fun environment. The program advocates values such as inclusivity, respon-sibility, engagement, friendship, and of course, promotes the pleasure of practicing the beautiful game. Cranny Crafts: Do your kids like Arts & Crafts? New to Michael Cranny this year , students w ill have the opportuni-ty to unleash their inner creativity at Cranny Crafts. Using tools & techniques, students can explore their creative side with a variety of workshops and classes from drawing and painting, to clay making and molding, to gimp and beading. Students will be able to bring home, and show off their masterpieces. MCES Cooking Class: This year , Michael Cranny will be offer ing cooking lessons for our students. Your child will be participating in a variety of kid friendly cooking. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn the joy of cooking through engaging lessons and cooperating with other students. During the sessions students are encouraged to build their leadership and team-building skills as well as different methods of cooking in a fun environment.

Grade 7 Historical Wax Museum

The Grade 7 team at MCES would like to thank everyone who visited the Historical Wax Museum perfor-mance. It was a huge success! We greatly appreciated the maturity and respect that our student visitors demonstrated. The level of engagement from the students was made clear by the critical questions they asked. Also, thanks to all the staff and teachers who took time out of their busy class schedules to come visit the Wax Museum. The Grade 7 students had been working very hard for over a month on this, and though it was quite challenging we are VERY proud of the end result. -Genevieve K. & Daniel T.

Dress Warmly for Cold Weather

According to TIME magazine, research shows that the average person spends 87 percent of their

time in enclosed buildings and 6 percent of their time in enclosed vehicles. That’s a total of 93 per-

cent of your life spent inside. So at Michael Cranny ES, we believe everyone needs to get more fresh

air by spending more time outdoors – and there are many benefits you’ll receive by doing this,

above and beyond the fresh air. The benefits are so great that you should strive to get outdoors virtually every day –

even if it’s winter and the temperatures are low. Some of the benefits include boosting creativity and focus and im-

proving your mood and self esteem. So come prepared to BE OUTSIDE!

All our students will be expected to be outside before, during and after school in all weather conditions (i.e., rain or

shine, snow or heat). Students need to come to school dressed to play outside during recesses. Boots (for rain or

snow), rain jackets, hats, mitts, scarves and snow pants will help make recess an enjoyable time. It is advisable for

children to keep extra pants and socks at school in case they get wet. To avoid adding to our clothing collection in the

Lost and Found Bin, please be sure to label all articles of clothing. “Weather conditions are closely monitored daily. In

winter, recesses will be shortened or cancelled if frostbite is an issue.”
