    Introduction

Leadership is the ability to influence, involve and motivate others towards a common mission. A

leader is an integral part of an organisation and he is one of the elements which make that

company or organisation unique from the others.

From a very classical autocratic approach to a very creative, participative approach there are

many forms of leadership. Not everything old was bad and not everything new is good.

Different styles were needed for different situations and each leader needed to know when to

    exhibit a particular approach

Leadership strategies define every leader's personal leadership style

May adopt some of these in achieving the organization's goals and objectives

Basic leadership styles can be classified as

    y Autocraticy Bureaucraticy Democraticy Laissez-faire

    Autocratic

The classical approach in which manager retains as much power and decision-making authority

as possible. He does not consult staff, nor are the employees allowed to provide any input.

Staff expected to obey orders without receiving any explanations.

Structured set of rewards and punishments are in place and are strictly followed.

Greatly criticized during the past 30 years

    Gen X staff highly resistant

    Autocratic leaders

y Rely on threats and punishment to influence staffy Do not trust staff

y Do not allow for employee inputAdvantages ofAutocratic leadership

Sometimes autocracy is the most effective style of leadership to use. It can be very effective

    when

y New, untrained staff does not know which tasks to perform or which procedures tofollow.

y Effective supervision is provided only through detailed orders and instructions.y Staff does not respond to any other leadership style.y Limited time in which to make a decisiony A managers power is challenged by staffy Work needs to be coordinated with another department or organisation

    Disadvantages

    Autocratic leadership is ineffective when

y Staff become tense, fearful, or resentfuly Staff expect their opinions heardy Staff depend on their manager to make all their decisionsy Low staff morale, high turnover and absenteeism and work stoppage are existent

    Bureaucratic Leadership

Bureaucratic Leader manages the staff or the organisation by the book. Everything is done

according to procedure or policy. If any situation is not covered by the book, it is referred to thenext level above him.

A police officer is not a leader because all he does is enforce the rules. In the same way a

bureaucratic leader is not an effective leader as he is never proactive.

    Most effective when

y Staff is to perform routine tasks over and overy Staff needs to understand certain standards or procedures.y Safety or security training is being conducted for the staff and following the rules is of

    utmost importance.

y Staff is performing tasks that require handling valuable items or cash or any item whichhas a priority for safety and security.

    Ineffective when

y Work habits form that are hard to break, especially if they are no longer usefuly Staff lose their interest in their jobs and in their co-workers

y Staff do only what is expected of them and no more

Democratic Leadership StyleDemocratic Leadership Style is also known as participative style

Encourages staff to be a part of the decision making

Keeps staff informed about everything that affects their work and shares decision making and

    problem solving responsibilities

    A democratic leader

y Is a coach who has the final say, but gathers information from staff before making adecision

y Produces high quality and high quantity work for long periods of timey Staff like the trust they receive and respond with cooperation, team spirit, and high

    morale

y Develops plans to help staff evaluate their own performancey Allows staff to establish goalsy Encourages staff to grow on the job and be promotedy Recognises and encourages achievement

A democratic style of leadership is most successful when used with highly skilled or experienced

staff or when implementing operational changes or resolving individual or group problems.

    Most effective when

y Wants to keep staff informed about matters that affect themy Wants staff to share in decision-making and problem-solving duties.y Wants to provide opportunities for staff to develop a high sense of personal growth and

    job satisfaction.

y A large or complex problem that requires lots of input to solvey Changes must be made or problems solved that affect staffy Want to encourage team building and participation

Democratic leadership should not be used when

y Not enough time to get everyones inputy Easier and more cost-effective for the manager to make the decisiony Cant afford mistakesy Manager feels threatened by this type of leadershipy Staff safety is a critical concern

Laissez-Faire Leadership StyleLaissez-Faire Leadership Style is also known as the hands-off style

The manager provides little or no direction and gives staff as much freedom as possible.

All authority or power given to the staff and they determine goals, make decisions, and resolveproblems on their own.

An effective style to use when

y Staff highly skilled, experienced, and educatedy Staff have pride in their work and the drive to do it successfully on their owny Outside experts, such as staff specialists or consultants usedy Staff trustworthy and experienced

    Should not be used when

y Staff feel insecure at the unavailability of a managery The manager cannot provide regular feedback to staff on how well they are doingy Managers unable to thank staff for their good worky The manager doesnt understand his or her responsibilities and hoping the staff cover for

    him or her

    Conclusion

    Varying Leadership Style

Three factors that influence which leadership style to use are

    1. The managers personal background: What personality, knowledge, values, ethics, andexperiences does the manager have. What does he or she think will work?

    2. Staff being supervised: Staff individuals with different personalities and backgrounds; The leadership style used will vary depending upon the individual staff and what he or

    she will respond best to

    3. The organization: The traditions, values, philosophy, and concerns of the organizationinfluence how a manager acts

    Determining the Best Leadership Style

Should leaders be more task or relationship (people) oriented Leaders have a dominant style, one

they use in a wide variety of situations

No one best style - leaders must adjust their leadership style to the situation as well as to the

    people being led
