here are many great Bol-lywood dads but today I share just four father roles which I like, all dia-metrically different from the other but all qualify for the BEST DAD title. The message is simple, modern or traditional, understanding or strict, loving or harsh – Papa jaisa koi nahin...

Amitabh Bachhan in Baghban is the perfect fa-

ther and of course hus-band. He is a father to an orphan too, Salman Khan who is more a son to him than his own children. The movie is an out and out tear-jerker and frank-ly too one-sided with only black and white roles with no shades of grey but one can’t fault Bachhan as the father and grandfather in this movie!

Anupam Kher as the

doting understanding fa-ther to Shahrukh in Dil-wale Dulhaniya Le Jay-enge is one of my favour-ite on-screen dads. He is a father who accepts his son and fights for him at every step, going all out to en-sure that his son married the woman he loves! The easy humour and father-son bond in the movie make it a memorable role!

Another favourite of

mine is Aamir Khan in Dangal. He was a man who knew what was best for his daughters even when they didn’t. He is a father who breaks the gender stereotypes and even stands against his wife for what he believes is right. A father who commands respect, ini-tially out of fear but later respected and adoration of pure daughterly love

for a man who is not just a Dad but a ‘guru’!

Kamal Hasan in Chachi 420, lifted in its entirety from Mrs Doubtfire and Indianised with the local values so that the couple stays together etc is a good watch. It is to the credit of Kamal that he assayed the role so well that one forgets the Doubtfire connect and roots for him to get his

daughter and wife back! A rocking Dad he was for sure!

Some other roles of fa-thers which have left a mark are Naseeruddin Shah in Masoom, Shah-rukh in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Alok Nath who is played a sanskari father in so many movies and Dilip Kumar as a misun-derstood father to Am-itabh in Shakti.

or generations, c o nv e r s a t i o n s around menstrua-tion have been marked by a cul-ture of stigma and silence. A lack of

information and education has meant that even today menstruation is viewed as a cause for shame. As a re-sult, community participa-tion, especially by men, in menstrual health manage-ment has been non-exist-ent. In conventional homes, men don’t participate in conversations around men-struation, let alone procur-ing sanitary napkins or other hygiene products for women. Despite being criti-cal to women and girls’ health, it is willfully ig-nored. So strong is the ta-boo that if an advertise-ment for sanitary napkins appears on television, the channel is either quickly changed or the family hur-riedly disperses.

Fortunately, today there are more and more exam-ples of men working with women to destigmatize and improve menstrual health. One example of this is a fa-ther from a small village in the Bundi district who not only realized the need to build upon his understand-ing about menstruation but also educate his daughter about menstrual hygiene.

In Lakshmipura village in Bundi, Rajasthan, Shankar a local farmer was left to raise his daughter Kavita, when her mother left them. Kavita was only in Class 6 then. When she entered adolescence, Shankar faced the chal-lenges of explaining the

process of puberty and menstruation to his young daughter. His limited knowledge about menstru-ation left him feeling defi-cient. He was not aware of hygienic menstrual prod-ucts, use of cloth pads or sanitary napkins and his elderly mother was not equipped to have this con-versation with the teenager either.

Luckily, help was at hand. Population Founda-tion of India, in partner-ship with Shiv Shiksha Samiti, has been leading the FAYA (Feminist Adoles-cent and Youth-led Action) program in Bundi. The pro-gram aims at building knowledge among adoles-cents of their sexual and reproductive health and access to services. One of the FAYA field workers met Shankar during a meeting with villagers where changes in adolescence were being discussed with the community. This interaction had a major impact on the farmer, who started working hard to understand and empathize.

“When Kavita began menstruating, she would have unbearable stomach-aches and vomit too. I felt helpless, I was unable to do anything for her or even understand what was going wrong. If schools pro-vided information about menstruation, young girls like my daugh-ter wouldn’t suffer so much. After listening to the representatives of the FAYA program, I got to know that menstruation is a perfectly normal process and not a cause for shame,” Shankar said.

His daughter is grateful, and healthier thanks to his newfound knowledge. “When I reached Class 9, I used to skip school at times due to menstruation-relat-ed stomach cramps. Even though I had friends to confide in, I missed my mother and found it tough to discuss men-struation-related is-sues with my father.

However, thanks to a change in his own perspec-tive, he went on to trans-form my attitude to-wards menstru-ation. To-d a y , when I

get my periods, he brings sanitary napkins and as-sures me that what I am going through is perfectly

normal and there is noth-ing to feel ashamed about,” Kavita says.

Over time, Kavita has begun to see her father as a friend and is now able to openly discuss her issues with him. He is also sensi-tive to her problems, espe-cially when she is men-

struating.Divya Santhanam, Sen-

ior State Program Manager, Population Foundation of India says, “Kavita has re-cently turned 14, and Shankar is now building awareness in the commu-nity on subjects like men-strual hygiene manage-ment. Shankar has evolved as a champion and change-maker who has challenged gender constructs not just in the life of his daughter but for the entire commu-nity. He was recently hon-oured by the Sarpanch for being a beacon of change. Shankar also supports the Population Foundation of India’s FAYA initiative for the delivery of comprehen-sive health education and encourages adolescents to participate in sessions. This story reflects the im-portance of engaging key stakeholders like parents, teachers, PRI members to build an enabling environ-ment for adolescents to ac-cess their health rights and encourages us to go on do-ing the work we do.”

Father’s play a huge role in one’s life. Not only do they put their children’s needs before theirs, but they also guide them at every step. As such, while fathers and their selfless love need to be celebrated every day of the day, the third Sunday in June is specially celebrated as Father’s Day every year. City First spoke to a few children and their fathers about their sweetest memories, funny and happy ones!

SON’S FIRST HERO, DAUGHTER’S FIRST LOVE

A foundation has no feelings, it can-

not be decorated. It only knows how to do the job.

A father can never show emotions, can only keep a poker’s face and do

the job i.e., be a father. A foundation never shows pride even

though the house is beaming and fl aunts

its beauty. Likewise, a father will never

risk showing pride when his kids grow up into wonderful

human beings. He doesn’t want his

grown-up kids to become com-

placent. That’s what my father

is like.Kudos to all

the fathers’ and father-

like fi gures.

My son Reyansh has been my

source of strength. I cannot thank God enough for ths kind

of happiness he has brought to our lives. Reyansh is a very naughty kid but at such

a young age he is also very understanding and cooperative. As a father, I

always wish the ebst for my son, and wish him to

grow up with discipline and at the same time understand the impor-

tance odf relations and respect everyone

around him. I love how he cutely de-mands little things,

the joy on his face is priceless. All my

love and wishes to him for mak-

ing me feel the importance of

this day.

MITALI [email protected]

Like most adults, I have always had an unsaid shy-

ness with my father. It was always out of respect. My dad and I share a very close bond which always works on understand-ing. He would speak his heart out to me while I on the other hand would always keep things to myself. I am really grateful to him for the faith he has shown in me and for letting me be myself.

My most cherished memory with my father would be not very long ago. It was my wedding day, my father and grandfa-ther sat me down and acquainted me with

what marriage would mean and how I should always keep my better half’s opinion and choices a priority since she’s leaving everything to start a new life with me. I think that’s the best advice and memory I remember, so far.

My twins mean the world to me, very often people ask if I can ever distinguish between them and if I love someone more than the other, the answer to that is I am their Father,

I know their each and every bone, and, I love both of them with all my heart, and, I can’t wait for them to grow as beautiful human beings. They should inspire everyone and should grow up as strong beautiful and independent women.

When I look back and remember my child-hood days, especially with my father, I get very emotional. When my son, Aarudra was born, my happiness had no bounds. I became

protective and always felt more responsible. He is a kid with immense learning power and his innocent mischiefs also make us laugh. He is fond of Gems and wearing su-perman or policeman costumes. As a father, I make sure to fulfi l all his dreams and imbibe good values in him.

always had an

works on understand-

keep things to myself.

Before you make the world

know it’s ‘Father’s Day’ today.

Make sure your father knows one. Be-fore you get busy with

your social feeds about your father, make sure

you don’t forget him to tell virtually, how important he is to you. Before you make the world know how much

you love him, make sure you don’t forget to tell him your-

self. I feel wishing someone virtually or on call at 12 is

way better than updat-ing your status for that

person. And well I strongly believe in “Kabhi kabhi keh dena acha

hota hai.”

My Dad and I have a lot of things in com-mon, we regu-

larly go on adventures together, our eating habits are also alike. He has always been there when I needed him. We should embrace our relationship with our fathers as they are the ones who gave us the gift of life. As I consider Dad as my idol, I try to act like dad, walk like him, replicate his ac-tions, which helps me to improve my personality. Love you Dad, Happy Father’s Day.

The meaning of Father’s Day is more than the commercialisa-

tion. Often on such oc-casions, we think about giving gifts. Father’s Day is important to take time to refl ect on our fathers and grandfathers and forefathers who came before us. Well, the father, as one of the key fi gures in our lives, is someone who is always there for us, regard-less of the situation. On Father’s Day, all the children should show their gratitude to their fathers.

June to September is a delightful season for those who utterly enjoy the monsoon rains. As skies turn dark and landscapes turn green, the arrival of monsoon season infuses new hope for a predominantly agricultural society like ours. The season is a lifeline for India! The rainy season also heralds a much-anticipated break from the torrid summer heat across India. In the ‘Digital Baal Mela 2021’ Season 2, a creative platform sponsored by Fu-

BJP MLA Avi-nash Gehlot from Jait-aran of Rajasthan as-sembly, who partici-pated in today’s dia-logue with the chil-dren, talked to the children about the same. Anadi Agarwal, a student of class 8 of Mahatma Gandhi School from Pratap-garh, introduced MLA Avinash Gehlot to the children.

BJP MLA Avinash

Gehlot praised the kids and said that the big-gest contribution dur-ing this epidemic is from the end of chil-dren. Multiple restric-tions have been im-plied on children to keep them safe from C o r o n a v i r u s , which has been the most difficult decision, as it hin-ders their growth and development. And yet, the children took it positively and attend-ed the online classes with the utmost vig-our. They have fol-lowed the lockdown very strictly and en-gaged themselves in activities at home.

Janhvi Sharma, one of the participant at

DBM requested the special guest to share the experience of go-ing to the assembly for the first time. He said that when Narendra Modi went to the Lok Sabha for the first

time, he had laid his head on the stairs of the Lok Sabha. In such a situation,

I am also a common person who has trav-elled this journey like him. He also mentioned that it has been two and a half years since he was in any position in politics and his effort has been that no one should be harmed by his pen. He has always considered serving the public as his first duty.
