• The first animals who went into space were fruit flies aboard a V-2 rocket launched from White Sands Missle Range, New Mexico in 1947.

• The first monkey Launched into space was Albert II in june 1949. He reached the altitude of 134 km, but died on impact when the parachute failed

• In august 1950 a mouse was launched in space, the rocket reached the altitude of 137 km. Unfortunately the mouse died when the rocket disintegrated due to parachute failure

• In the 1950s, the USSR launched a total of 12 dogs on various suborbital flights

• On 3 november 1957, Laika became the first living being to orbit the Earth on Sputnik 2. Unfortunately the dog died after several hours because of heat and stress

In 1960, two dogs named Belka and Strelka became the first animals to survive a trip into orbit.

• The french launched the first cat into space on 18 october 1963. Félicette reached an altitude of 160 km and landed safely

During the Voskhod program, two russian space dogs Veterok and Ugolyok were launched into space on 22 February, 1966. They orbited 22 days before returning safely to Earth on 16 march.

On 3 February 2010, Iran became the latest country to launch animals into space. The animals were launched on top of the Kavoshgar 3 rocket and returned safely to Earth

On 23 September 2014, the SpaceX CRS-4 delivered 20 mice on the ISS for study of the long-term effects of microgravity on the rodents.
