• Animals with backbone are called vertebrates.• Vertebrates include many different kinds of
animals. They can be found everywhere – in oceans, rivers, forests, mountains and deserts.
• Animals with backbone can be broken up into smaller groups by characteristics.

Fish’ Characteristics• They are the largest group of vertebrates.• They come in many sizes and shapes.• Many fish are covered with scales that
protect them.• They have fins.• Their body temperatures vary in the water.• They breathe through gills.
![Page 6: Animals' classification](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022013116/568c53401a28ab4916ba0703/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Amphibians
![Page 7: Animals' classification](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022013116/568c53401a28ab4916ba0703/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Amphibians’ Characteristics
• Amphibians hatch from eggs and can live on land as an adult.
• Young amphibians breathe through gills like fish.
• Adult amphibians breathe air from lungs.• Some have smooth moist skin.

Reptiles
![Page 9: Animals' classification](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022013116/568c53401a28ab4916ba0703/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Reptile’s Characteristics
• Reptiles can move at various speeds.• They lay their eggs on land.• They have dry scaly skin.• They live in hot, dry deserts and in warm, wet
tropical rain forests.

Birds
![Page 11: Animals' classification](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022013116/568c53401a28ab4916ba0703/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Birds’ Characteristics
• Birds lay hard shelled eggs that hatch in their nest.• There are about 9,000 types of birds.• Birds are vertebrates that have wings and they are
covered with feathers. • The bird’s skeleton is very light in weight. This
helps them to fly.

Mammals
![Page 13: Animals' classification](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022013116/568c53401a28ab4916ba0703/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Mammals’ Characteristics• They include a wide range of animals: ape,
lions, kangaroos, bats, etc.• Their young grows inside the mother.• Humans are mammals but they (animals)
have more hair than we do.The hair keeps the animals warm.
• They feed milk to their young.

Invertebrates
![Page 15: Animals' classification](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022013116/568c53401a28ab4916ba0703/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
• Invertebrates are animals that don’t have a backbone.
• 97 % of the animal kingdom is made up of invertebrates.
• Some can be found in ponds, oceans, and other water environments.
• There are three groups of invertebrates.
![Page 16: Animals' classification](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022013116/568c53401a28ab4916ba0703/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Insects
![Page 17: Animals' classification](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022013116/568c53401a28ab4916ba0703/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Insects’ Characteristics• Insects have bodies divided into three parts: head,
thorax and abdomen.
• They have six legs.
• They are the only invertebrates that can fly.
E.g: fly, wasp, ladybird, mosquito…
![Page 18: Animals' classification](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022013116/568c53401a28ab4916ba0703/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Arachnids
![Page 19: Animals' classification](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022013116/568c53401a28ab4916ba0703/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Arachnids’ Characteristics
• Arachnids have two body parts: head and abdomen.
• They have eight legs.
• Most arachnids live on land.
E.g: spider, scorpion, tarantula…
![Page 20: Animals' classification](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022013116/568c53401a28ab4916ba0703/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Molluscs
![Page 21: Animals' classification](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022013116/568c53401a28ab4916ba0703/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Molluscs' Characteristics
• A mollusc has a hard shell, a rough tongue, and a muscular foot.
E.g: A snail is a mollusc with a single hard shell.
Squids and octopuses are also molluscs. Their hard shells are small, they are inside their bodies.
