PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Firstly, congratulations to all those who contributed to our show on Easter Sunday. That includes all the members, exhibitors and handlers who made it such a successful event in spite of the small entry.
Our judges on the day were Brian Tolley from New Zealand for breed classes and Phil Brown (NSW) for the Sweepstakes. They both seemed to enjoy their assignments and we are grateful for their input.
As usual there is a large number of people who organise, judge, steward and photograph an event like this .In particular I must mention our Secretary Sue Schweickle, the Show Secretary and Ring Steward Karen Baldwin and of course Joyce Mortimer who is not only a Club Patron but is also a Committee member and Newsletter editor.
Photographer on the day was Megan Rochester who took over 200 photos which will be available on CD .
Thanks Megan .
On the CD will be most of those photos which includes all Class placegetters along with candid shots and perhaps a short video taken on the day. Our Treasurer Pamela Ellis is organising this and CDs will be available shortly for $10. Details elsewhere in this News Letter.
A show such as ours can only be a financial success with the help of the many donors (listed in the Catalogue) and commercial sponsors Animal Network and Isle of Dogs. A big thanks to all of these.
The March Meeting of the Club was largely concerned with final details for the Show and at the suggestion of some members it was decided to hold a meeting immediately following the show. Minutes of 17th March meeting previously forwarded to members.
The meeting held on Easter Sunday following the Show was to consider suggestions about improving communication and services to those in remote areas who cannot attend meetings. Unfortunately no new ideas were forthcoming.
It was decided that the two shows to be held next year with Mike and Judi Tempest judging will also include a Sweepstakes class or classes for clipped down dogs. Final details yet to be decided but if you have suggestions please advise our Secretary Sue. There will also be an Obedience/ Agility demonstration. A judge for Sweepstakes has yet to be decided – suggestions to Secretary.
This meeting also called for nominations for the judge(s) for 2015.
When Paula Bockman advised that she would have international judges available for that year on Easter Sunday it was decided to defer nominations till we have advice from her regarding names and judging experience.
Enjoy your TTs.
Jim Hickie

Ricci came into the Pezzella Family in October 2004. Not real keen on the show ring much
happier at home with marmalade cat and other pets we have - he has got a big smile for
friends and a glare from under the chair for anybody else. I love him dearly and thank Ray
for letting me have such a beautiful beautiful boy.

This story begins in 1978 when I was looking for something to occupy me in retirement. Dog breeding
might be just the thing! At that time I had branched out from sporting terriers and had a pharaoh hound.
A smaller and long coated breed seemed a more glamorous and practical choice. I answered an
advertisement for Tibetan Terrier puppies and ordered a gold male from Granton in Sydney. My pup
wasn’t ready yet so I searched the local Hobart bookshops and came away with 3 books that each had 1
photo of a Tibetan Terrier. Apart from that bit of pre-knowledge it was watch and learn as my future
Champion grew: always the honoured house guest (as were all the others that came later).
Ch Granton Allas Allroary – from the second litter of
Ch.Hardacre Goodwish x EngCh.&Ch Hardacre Aurora
As the first TT in Tassie, Roary gained his title by 6 point
challenges; the judges were most sympathetic and never refused him.
Occasionally I found an interstate visitor to reassure me that Roary was as
he should be, especially during the change out of puppy coat when he
looked a mess and the adult coat was far off.
The romantic story of the kingdom of Tibet at the Top of the World was
strong in the imagination of early owners and I joined them enthusiastically. The birth place of the 14th
Dalai Lama lies in the Tibetan province of Qinghai and that name became my kennel prefix. To keep track
of each litter Qinghai is followed by a Tibetan number – Qinghai ka (litter one), then a Tibetan name that
shortens to something English. Qinghai ka Atisha call name “Ti”. Or Dolly from Dolma, Kammie from
Kamba, Sam from Samsar. Not everyone was happy, one woman was quite offended when she took
home Jigme (a good Tibetan name) as she saw only sexual connotations.
Next step - Roary needed a mate and no bitches were to be had. Three years of searching came to an
end when a lady in Victoria with ‘Boying’ stock (from Qld.) had to retire due to family illness, shortly after
she had bred her first litter. Another gold pup, lighter this time but well matched for size (pushing for
14”) made up my breeding pair. Mandy grew a very fine undercoat that needed to be finger teased;
instead I took to the scissors and didn’t show her. I was pleased to have two
slightly different lines to combine, as breeding wise that seemed good: it
turned out not good as the pair produced a case of Lens Luxation, revealed 7
years later from a pet home in SA.
The star from my foundation pair was Qinghai ka Atisha who made
history: taking Baby Puppy in Show at a Hobart Royal under an English judge
– the first Royal, Show Class for the breed in Australia. Hobart Royal became
a favourite for visitors hoping to take advantage of our unique conditions,
their attendance added to the interest in the breed and we got a chance
to meet owners and their dogs. Slight turmoil in the kennel area when 8
TTs turned up with only 3 benches allotted to the breed! Red faced
stewards said there couldn’t be that many TTs. We were all learning.
Locally TTs became a breed to be noticed and a number of show people
took a pup, presented it well and were invaluable in establishing the
breed in Hobart.

Cont...
Move on 2 years- and I had Barry Macdonald groom Atisha for a show. With that preparation she
took a once only Best in Group. With her very big coat on a small dog it took skill to present her with
some shape. In those times thinning or trimming were not approved, a TT must be ‘natural’- a concept
I believe I took too literally.
Late in the 1980s, with so many Australian TTs related I contacted Brian Harris to borrow his NZ Ch
Jemecs Briarus. He was sent over for 1 week, to fit his show commitments, and I only just got in a
mating as I hadn’t calculated the days necessary to have him prepared for his return flight. The dusting
he had to have stank (no other word for it) and no one would go near him. But the mating produced
the goods. The pick of litter went to Brian; and a black bitch, Betsy, stayed in Hobart shown with great
success with a local all breeds judge on the other end of the lead. Betsy became the first TT to
represent the breed in Tassie’s Champion of Champions competition.
Wanting to get to know the breed I began going overseas to see larger numbers of TTs. The English
reserve broke down when I kept returning, then members of the TTA couldn’t do enough for me. Later
trips included several TTCA American National Show weekends,
which were always a highlight in any trip. Also I found the World
Congresses interesting where you could meet breeders from
European countries who work under strict regulations that would
send us, freedom loving Aussies, up the wall.
Germ & Aust Ch Midgaardens Evergreen ‘Holly’
From contacts made in England I had the chance to import my two
B&W parti coloureds; Holly and then Jacko. I imagined they would give me B&W pups – their first
litter produced 3 pups - gold, or gold/W (I’ve never worked out how I got solid gold from B&Ws). Their
second litter was better with 4 B&W in a litter of 6. For Chombe I had a special soft spot - he was so
like Holly in appearance, with great strength which seemed right for bounding up mountains, but
might be over the limit for good stamina. This strength combined with Jacko’s fiery temperament
made him something of a handful. He did well in Victoria and in a year of particularly strong
competition took out the TTO newsletter pointscore.
A granddaughter of Jacko x Holly came back to me and became affected by PLL at a young age. The
research seeking a DNA test for PLL began before I entered the breed, but the test was not achieved in
time for me to know which of my imports carried the recessive gene – if only I could have had that
priceless breeding tool.
Jacko x Atisha produced perhaps my all-time favourite, Dan; a big lovable softy. He stood tall on
longer legs than my other TTs, right for an active working dog. His grey coat was not glamorous and
didn’t brush up as well as some other colours do, but he held his own when shown.
Being accepted into the TT world has been a privilege. Did I retire? No,
instead I found a new life and wonderful people who gave generous
support. In particular, important achievements under the banner of
TTO would not have happened without Max Baldwin, Ray Schuck, and
Jean Macdonald. But the real driver of it all was The Little People –
loyal, fun loving Tibetan Terriers.
If you can expand on this - email photos/comments to Joyce.

Just heard the other day that Debbie Pezzella’s husband
Michael has been in hospital and the news is that the Drs are
pleased with how his recovery is going.
The club wishes you’re back to doing all your normal things
soon...
Also notice that Roslind Ellis is back to the dog shows again after her
operation...not jumping around like her normal self but we are all sure that it
won’t be too long.

Canine Inherited Disorders in the Tibetan terrier
The disorders listed in the first 3 categories below are believed to have an inherited basis, or are known to have a predilection for this breed ('breed predisposition'). This means the disorder occurs more commonly in this breed compared to other breeds, or to the general dog population. Common sense suggests that these are inherited disorders, but for many breeds and many disorders, the studies to determine the mode of inheritance or the frequency in the breed have not been carried out, or are inconclusive. We have listed disorders for which there is a general consensus among those investigating in this field and among veterinary practitioners, that the condition is significant in this breed. Where the mode of inheritance is known, this information is included on the linked disease page. The most popular breeds tend to have the most disorders listed because there is a larger number of dogs affected, and therefore more opportunity to recognize a breed predisposition to a particular disorder. As well, there is likely to be more indiscriminate breeding of these breeds, leading to a higher occurrence of inherited disorders. In less common or newer breeds, there may be no disorders listed or the list of disorders may be quite short, because it can take some time before enough dogs are affected to recognize an inherited condition.
Cataracts
Hip Dysplasia
Lens Luxation
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
Disorders associated with conformation These disorders are directly related to the conformation or standards for the breed. Although these conditions have in many cases become so common that they are accepted as normal for the breed, they can still cause serious physical problems and discomfort for the dog. One component of responsible breeding is to breed away from the extremes of conformation that cause these physical problems.
There are no disorders documented in this category for this breed.
Other disorders which may be inherited in this breed
These disorders have been reported sporadically, and may be inherited in this breed.
Retinal dysplasia

Just an update on what the Association is doing re fundraising…
On the 20th April, Sue has organised a BBQ selling sausages and onions on a roll. We just had a
day with another club and it went quite well and also we now have more of an idea on the
amounts of rolls, sausages, and onions (oh dear 10 kg of onions were cut up). It is a new idea for
Office Works it is not quite as busy a Bunnings but we had a good day financially.
Also Sue has collected many items for her ‘Trash & Treasure’. These items have come from
members and also generously from just friends. It has been amazing the amounts that have been
donated.
A BIG THANK YOU EVERYONE
