Animal Classification Project Option 1: A Cereal Box Display (covered with construction paper) Invertebrate on one side and Vertebrate on the other Option 2: A Wanted Poster (at least 12 X 18 in size- Invertebrate on one side & Vertebrate on the other) Option 3: A National Geographic Magazine Option 4: A Children’s Book (minimum of 8 pages) *** BE CAREFUL ABOUT PLAGIARISM! IT IS ILLEGAL TO COPY/PASTE SOMEONE ELSE’S WORDS AND PRETEND YOU WROTE THEM!!! ALWAYS WRITE YOUR PROJECTS IN YOUR OWN WORDS UNLESS USING QUOTES OR STATING SPECIFICALLY WHERE IT CAME FROM! *** 1. Students will be assigned both a group of vertebrates and invertebrates 2. Students will then choose from the four options located above on how they would like to construct their project. 3. Students will choose one example animal from each of their assigned categories (ie. Mammals = Brown Bear, Echinoderms = Sea Star) *Only for classification purposes* 4. Students will then research their assigned groups of animals and will construct their project based on the following requirements: Information that must be included for ALL projects: A title for your project The scientific name (genus and species) and common name of one animal from each of your categories (Vertebrate & Invertebrate) The remaining 6 classification levels for both your Vertebrate & Invertebrate example animals (Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family) Identify the various types of organisms that belong to your groups; include pictures. What physical characteristics do your groups of animals have (the size, color, fur, feathers, etc.) Where the species can be physically found on the planet The type of environment that your species lives in (arctic, rainforest, ocean, jungle, etc.) How is your animal ADAPTED to live where it does? (Ex: blend in with the snow, have sharp claws for hunting, etc.)

project based on the following requirements: Information that must be included for ALL projects:

❑ A title for your project

❑ The remaining 6 classification levels for both your Vertebrate & Invertebrate example animals (Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family)

❑ Identify the various types of organisms that belong to your groups; include pictures.

❑ What physical characteristics do your groups of animals have (the size, color, fur, feathers, etc.)

❑ Where the species can be physically found on the planet

❑ The type of environment that your species lives in (arctic, rainforest, ocean, jungle, etc.)

❑ What type of circulatory system do your groups of organisms have? Open or Closed? What is the difference?

❑ Characteristics or habits of your vertebrate and invertebrate group (Body structure, Reproduction, Life Cycle, etc.)

❑ Whether your animal gets eaten by another animal of some kind

❑ What do they typically eat

❑ Explain any unique features that your organisms have

❑ Ectotherm or Endotherm? What characteristic qualifies them to be one or the other?

❑ Include any other interesting facts that you would like to share that doesn't fit into the categories above.
