Make sure you’ve done some examples of alliteration with your child before you do this

activity so they are familiar with the idea.

We’ve sorted a bunch of animals into alphabetical order for you below. You could refer

to these examples when you do the suggested activities or you could use toy animals

as an alternative.

Bertha Goes to the Zoo

We first saw this activity described in the UK government’s Letters and Sounds phonics

programme…

Collect a group of animals that start with the same the same sound and chant the

following rhyme as you pick each one up:

Bertha the bus is going to the zoo, Who does she see as she passes through? … a pig, a panda, a parrot, a ….

Get your child to continue picking up and saying the animal names after you’ve done

the first 2 or 3. If you have more than one child they could take turns picking up and

saying an animal name.

Animal Sort

Cut out the animals and mix them up and then get your child to sort them into groups

with the same first letter sound.

Alliterated Animal Names

Tell your child that you want them to help you name a bunch of animals for a pretend

zoo you’re starting. Say that you’d really like names that start with the same letter

sound as the animal.

You could tell them that you’ve already thought of names for a couple of animals so

they’re clear about the idea. For example, Penny the penguin and Sammy the snake.

See the example animals on the next pages.
