Foreword A parent’s point of view Tracy Cook

Whenever you get a request from school for your child to go on a school trip, two questions always cross your mind. Just how much are they going to learn from it? And how much is it going to cost?

When my daughter came home with details about Anglia’s World War One battlefields tour, we were immediately impressed with the comprehensive itinerary. But it seemed a little on the expensive side. It wasn’t until I had been invited to the pre-tour briefing with company director and guide Alain Chissel that I realised just how insightful this trip would be. And actually, what very good value it offered.

The pre-tour briefings are excellent, reassuring and a real boon for the concerned parent and all part of the professional service Anglia offer. Here’s your chance to ask questions and find out exactly what your child will be doing. Health, safety, clothing, feeding and toileting issues had all been meticulously planned and there was no doubt that Anglia Tours had thought of everything.

But what absolutely stands out with Anglia is the quality and passion of their guides. Each tour is fully led by an expert in their field and they know their subjects inside out. They are great storytellers and will absolutely engage your child. Many have military backgrounds and can give not only a historical and political view of the war, but the soldiers’ perspective too. How would you attack up this ridge, knowing there were two machine gun emplacements above it? Why do you think the trenches were built to be winding, not straight?

The itinerary is jam-packed. There is no leaving students to mooch around a museum by themselves. These tours cram in as many sites per day as possible, so each day is even better value and

pupils are out of the classroom for less time. Every site is filled with lively, anecdote filled stories and explanations and the guides even bring props to show. My daughter had her eyes opened by seeing a real issue soldiers’ wound dressing while she stood inside a gloomy Field Dressing Station. And she was humbled to try on an early type gas mask at the very spot where gas was used against British troops for the first time.

Her guide explained in detail why over 200,000 men were to become casualties fighting over such a small strip of land at Passchendaele and led them among the endless graves at Tyne Cot, Britain’s largest Commonwealth cemetery, telling the stories of the bravest soldiers buried there.

I don’t think she’s ever learned so much from a school trip. She came home stimulated, inspired and thoughtful. The history curriculum had been brought alive in a way that reading textbooks never can. And not just the curriculum, but the lessons of history: the realities of war and the relevance of Remembrance today. The conversations went on for days after she got back.

So was it worth the money?

Absolutely. The tour packed into three days what other tour operators offer over five, there were no hidden extras and all educational materials were included. If you are paying a little more than some other operators, it is absolutely worth it for the excellent calibre guides. In fact, we were so impressed that we booked the rest of the family on an Anglia Tours trip. It was a revelation. I can only strongly recommend you try it too. You will never want your school trips to be conducted by anyone else.

Tracy Cook’s daughter is at The Lady Eleanor Holles School in Hampton, Middlesex. Tracy is a freelance journalist and blogger and writes for national newspapers and magazines. These are her personal views and she was not paid for this article.

Our new tours for 2013–14 include visits to Greece and Rome. Designed specifically for those studying Ancient History and Classics, the programme for each of these visits will offer a real chance to explore sites at the heart of these ancient civilisations. We have added to our repertoire of French tours with a visit to Paris focussing on Revolutionary France and included a new tour to the Netherlands looking in depth at life in Occupied Europe and the road to the Holocaust. But it is perhaps the section we have called “Winning the Peace” which excites me most. I am delighted to tell you that we are now able to offer bespoke programmes for UK schools who wish to visit Northern Ireland or Israel. These tours are designed to let your students see at first hand the steps being taken to resolve two of the world’s most intractable conflicts.

For ‘Anglia in the Classroom’ we have lined up a team of high profile speakers and guest lecturers, each of whom has been chosen because of their ability to engage with schools. These sessions are designed not only to be informative

and entertaining but will offer your students a real chance to debate a host of subjects.

In these straitened times, cost will always play a significant part in your decision making process.

On the face of it, our tours might look a little more expensive. However you need to look very closely at what you are being offered. We are all familiar with the ‘Low Cost’ approach adopted by some airlines. You are offered such an attractive price that you rule out the alternatives. However it is only when you are committed and it’s too late, that you find out the price ratchets inexorably upwards, each time you click your mouse.

With Anglia the price you are given is what you pay. Everything we detail in our itineraries is included as standard. No hidden extras for you to worry about and no need to go back to parents asking for more money only weeks before you go.

That’s the Anglia Standard.

We also appreciate that time spent away from the classroom can be an issue. So when you compare any

Anglia itinerary with those offered by our competitors you will see that we cover so much more in less time. As you will have our guides with you throughout your tour, you will see and do more in two days than most of our competitors will do in three, or even four days. Like for like there is no comparison.

That’s the Anglia Standard.

When you read this brochure, please look very carefully at the Foreword. In the past we have had Teachers and famous Historians, Generals and Authors endorse what we do. I thought it was time we had the view of someone who is asked to pay for school trips – a parent!

Tracy Cook is the mother of a student we had the pleasure of taking to Ypres and the Somme. She gives her perspective on our approach from the pre-tour briefing she attended, the passion shown by our guides during the tour and, more importantly, the educational and emotional value her daughter undoubtedly gained from the experience. We think it is such a wonderful endorsement we are going to send copies out with our initial enquiry pack so you can send it on to the parents of your students to help them make up their mind.

I look forward to seeing you in 2013.

Colonel AD Chissel TD Director Anglia Tours

IntroductionWelcome to our 2013 –14 brochure. As I’m sure you will notice as you look inside, this year we are adding to our range of established tours, with a series of programmes to diverse and wide ranging locations. We are also building on our highly successful Living History presentations by offering you the chance to bring Anglia into your classroom. So there are exciting times ahead!

“Thank you so much for your own work on our behalf. Your itinerary is clearer than the other company we approached and it is more tailored exactly to our needs. Most importantly, your own manner of dealing with me has been so pleasant and helpful - this counts for a lot! You really made me feel that our trip was important to you and that you weren’t merely ‘doing your job’!”Sgiol Lionacleit, Benbecula Alain guiding at Bayernwald

GreeceIn the late summer of 480 BC, the Persian host of Xerxes broke into Attica, assaulted Athens with fire and sword and captured the Acropolis. There were no survivors. Shortly afterwards a combined Greek fleet under the Athenian Themistokles, defeated the Persians in a great sea battle in the Salamis channel, within the very shadow of the fire-blackened wreckage of the Acropolis. The Athenians learnt two lessons which they never forgot. The need for strong defensive walls to protect them and that their real strength lay in their democratic navy. It was this which set it on the road to become a radical democracy, idealised by generations since.

Anglia is delighted to offer 4 and 5 day programmes designed specifically for students of Classics and Ancient History, focussing not only on Athens, its culture and unique democracy, but the impact Hellenic civilization had across the Mediterranean and beyond.

RomeAt the end of the first century BC what did ‘effeminate’ Greeks in Alexandria and ‘long-haired’ Gauls in Armorica have in common? All manner of things still distinguished them one from another, language and customs to name but two. They simply shared the condition that they were subject to the domination of one single city; Rome.

Our tours to Rome will examine the superior aspects of Latin culture and the legacy still with us today in law, administration and language. But with an empire built on military might, where much of the city’s grandeur was paid for from the spoils of conquest, we shall also explore its politics (Roman Forum, Forum of Augustus), propaganda (Trajan’s Column, Arch of Constantine) economy (the ruins of Ostia Antica, ancient Rome’s main port) and diversions (Circus Maximus, Colosseum) through its monuments and buildings.

IsraelAnglia is pleased to offer this new tour which focuses on Israel in Biblical times. In Jerusalem your visit starts at the Mount of Olives before moving into the Old City, a settlement with more than 4,000 years of history. The tour includes visits to Masada, scene of the heroic stand against the Romans, the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, the Dead Sea and of course the birth place of Christ – Bethlehem. You will visit the Mount of Beatitudes and walk in the footsteps of Jesus – a unique and moving experience. Groups undertaking this ground-breaking tour also have the opportunity to look at modern Israel with a flexible and tailor made programme for your school.

You will have an incredible educational experience.

The Ancient WorldFor centuries the chronicles and histories of the Ancient World have fascinated generations.

The lure of cities such as Athens, Rome and Jerusalem has drawn many to walk their narrow streets, to trace the footsteps of generals, politicians and theologians and seek out the ground where world changing events took place.

Anglia is delighted to be able to offer these tours designed specifically to support current GCSE and A level specifications. Each programme will allow your students to further develop their understanding of civilisations which shaped the world around us.

The NormansWhilst most of us know the story of the Battle of Hastings, few really understand the background to one of the most momentous events in our history. This tour will explore the origins of William of Normandy and his motives for invading England in 1066, visiting William’s birthplace of Falaise Castle, the town of Caen where his remains were initially buried and the world-famous Bayeux Tapestry.

The tour could be the platform for a wider study of medieval history, exploring themes such as kingship, war, revolt and rebellion and church and state, or support a cross-curricular trip embracing cultural visits and French language components.

The Hundred Years WarThis two-day tour takes students to two of the most famous battlefields in English history – Agincourt and Crecy. Giving students the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Edward III, the Black Prince and Henry V, your expert guide will discuss the leadership and tactics of these great leaders, the triumph of the longbow, the fatal errors made by the French – and the crucial role of weather and ground as you walk the battlefields. It may also be possible to extend your journey to visit the beautiful medieval town of Rouen, held by the English during the 100 Years War and site of the execution of French heroine Joan of Arc.

Medieval EuropeFor nearly four hundred years English and French histories were inseparable. A Norman Duke held the English throne and his descendants pursued claims to French territory, leading to centuries of conflict and hostility. These tours allow pupils to follow in the footsteps of kings and princes through one of the most colourful periods in history.

The English Civil War The battle of Naseby was fought on the morning of the 14th June 1645. In the open fields of that small Northamptonshire village, Parliament’s New Model Army faced King Charles I’s main field army. After nearly three years of conflict this was the decisive battle of the Civil War. Only about 4,000 Royalists escaped the field, most of whom were either cavalry or senior officers – the main Royalist army had been utterly destroyed.

Anglia is delighted to be able to offer a guided tour of one of the most important English battlefields. Your guide will cover the background to the battle, the weapons, tactics and the life of the soldier and his family. With the aid of a costumed interpreter your guide will give pupils the opportunity to examine and handle replica kit before telling the story of the battle on the very ground where it took place.

Revolutionary FranceIn July 1789 unrest broke out in Paris. An armed mob stormed the gates of the Bastille prison and fortress, hated symbol of despotic royal rule, and so began one of the bloodiest and most terrifying periods of modern history.

With Anglia Tours visit the sites of some of these dreadful yet crucial events: Louis XIV’s sumptuous palace of Versailles, where the concept of absolute monarchy became reality; the site of the Bastille, where Revolution began; the Hotel de Ville, home of the Paris Commune; the Conciergerie, prison and museum, where Marie Antoinette spent her final days, and the Place de la Concorde – formerly Place de la Revolution – where Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were among the thousands who met their grisly end under the blade of ‘Madame la Guillotine’.

With the possibility of visiting Les Invalides, including the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte, the splendours of the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and even a trip on the Seine, Paris offers a fascinating historical and cultural backdrop for any tour.

The Great WarStudy material available

It is nearly one hundred years since the British Expeditionary Force fired its first shots in the outskirts of the Belgian town of Mons and yet the impact of the four years of ferocious fighting which followed still continues to captivate historians across the world.

Whether you are looking to provide your KS3 class with an opportunity to explore the reality of life in the trenches, studying the role of the British Army on the Western Front with a GCSE group, or examining the changing nature of warfare with AS students, Anglia is uniquely placed to create a programme structured to support your classroom based teaching.

Battlefield ToursThere are many reasons why the Trench Warfare of the Western Front continues to dominate British understanding of the Great War. The futility of the Somme offensive of 1st July 1916 and the mud of Passchendaele in 1917 have become synonymous with the experience Tommy Atkins endured. Yet despite the conditions, the suffering and the losses, it was the resolve shown by thousands of young men from across the Empire which led eventually to victory.

Each Anglia tour to the battlefields of the Great War is led by an experienced battlefield guide, chosen not only for their historical knowledge, but more particularly for their ability to engage school groups. The purpose of these tours is both to build on classroom based learning and, perhaps more importantly as we approach the Centenary of the Great War, to improve awareness amongst today’s generation of what those who served their country almost 100 years ago actually went through.

If you want to see why Anglia Tours has built an unrivalled reputation as the market leader in fully guided battlefield tours for schools please take a look at the short film on our website.

Great War Living HistoryA guided tour of the battlefields of the Great War remains the best way of helping your students comprehend why this particular conflict had, and continues to have such an impact on Britain. However if you cannot take your students out to France or Belgium why not let Anglia bring this experience to your classroom.

Each of our ‘Great War Living History’ days, is led by an experienced battlefield guide selected for their ability to engage with younger students. Wearing fully authentic period uniform and carrying selected items of Great War weaponry, they will lead a series of sessions on a range of subjects such as ‘Life at the Front’, ‘Shot at Dawn’ or ‘Going into Action’, encouraging students to ask questions and offering them an opportunity to handle some of the items on display.

The Great War Centenary As part of Anglia’s preparations for the Great War Centenary, we are keen to increase awareness amongst today’s generation of those who served their country almost 100 years ago, and to do this we need your help and support!

Each year our guides meet hundreds of students and teachers who have relatives buried or commemorated across the Western Front. The aim of our ‘Keeping their memory alive’ project, which involves the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, is to gather the details of as many of these as possible. To take their personal stories, photographs, excerpts from diaries or letters home, and pass the material to the Commission which will consider publishing them on their website. It really is a fantastic opportunity to share this information not only with your family and friends, but also with people from across the world, many of who will visit the battlefields of France and Flanders over the coming years.

If you’d like to discuss how you and your students can play a part in this, or indeed link the project into your school’s website please do get in touch.

Show & TellA short walk through the battlefields of France and Flanders will bring your students face to face with the human cost of the Great War. Maps, photographs and most importantly, eye witness testimony, will help them to begin to see the landscape as it was almost a century ago. However if you really want to give them a chance to get inside the mind of Tommy Atkins and begin to appreciate the experience from a soldier’s perspective, sign up for one of Anglia’s Show & Tell sessions.

Using a wide range of period equipment and weaponry, these sessions, led by your Anglia guide, will include a short brief on the development of the equipment used by the British Army in the Great War, the opportunity for the whole group to handle artefacts such as a Lee Enfield rifle and the chance for one lucky ‘volunteer’ to become a ‘Tommy’.

If you want to see how engaging these sessions are just take a look at the short film on our website.

The Inter-War YearsStudy material available

One look at a map of Europe in 1919 would show how much the continent had changed since the outbreak of war five years before. Empires which had stood for centuries were no more. In their place were a series of smaller nation states vying with each other for land and resources. Although the Treaty of Versailles may have been welcomed by many living in these countries, in it also lay the roots of future economic turmoil and political conflict.

Retribution and Justice – the Nuremberg trials

Road to Power The handful of people who attended a meeting of the German Worker’s Party in Munich’s Sterneckerbrau in September 1919 may not have given a second thought to the young soldier in their midst, but twenty years later, as Germany celebrated his 50th birthday, the face of Adolf Hitler was instantly recognisable across the world.

It was in Munich that the NSDAP was born, where it launched its first flawed attempt to seize power and where, from 1925, it built the foundations that were to see it take power eight years later.

Each Anglia programme is designed specifically to support GCSE and A level specifications. Combining visits to the key sites in Munich, with a tour of Dachau Concentration Camp and the imposing architecture of the Nazi Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg, this tour will give your students a real insight into how the Nazis achieved their rise to power.

Nazi GermanyOn the night of 30th January 1933 central Berlin was the backdrop for a massive torchlight parade held to celebrate the appointment of Adolf Hitler as Chancellor of Germany. The city, which only 14 years earlier had been a battlefield on which the forces of Left and Right had fought for power, now resounded to the sound of marching jackboots. It was a sound with which much of Europe would soon become only too familiar.

Whilst little of the pre-war city may have survived the devastation that preceded the collapse of the Third Reich, just a short walk with your Anglia guide through the heart of Berlin will give your students a far greater understanding of the history of the city. Whether you are focussing on Weimar Germany, the Rise to Power of the NSDAP, or life in Nazi Germany, Anglia will prepare a bespoke itinerary for you that will engage your students from the outset.

Combined German ToursWhilst each of the aforementioned tours will give your students a real opportunity to consider the themes identified, a tour which starts in the beer halls of Bavaria and finishes on the streets of Berlin will afford them a chance to really get to grips with modern German history.

From Stalemate to Blitzkrieg This two day, fully guided tour begins on the Ypres Salient with a chance to examine development of trench warfare on the Western Front and look at the weapons available to the British Army at the time. Students will see how the nature of warfare changed between 1914 –1918 and be given the opportunity to attend the Last Post ceremony. The second day will start on ground held by the British Army in 1940 and will look at how Blitzkrieg theory, born in the final months of World War One, shaped the conflict that followed twenty years later. As well as looking at issues such as tactics, weaponry and communications your students will also have the chance to consider the morality of warfare, the Geneva convention and links to more recent conflicts.

Britain at War 1914 –1945 The idea that the Great War was a period of stasis during which those in command were unwilling or unable to move away from tried and tested tactics, continues to have some currency but is not borne out by an examination of the facts. Many of the technological and tactical developments employed to such great effect less than thirty years later began in the First World War. Anglia will take your students through the various innovations employed and attempts made to break the stalemate, visiting the Ypres Salient, which witnessed the introduction of the flamethrower and the use of Chlorine Gas in 1915, before moving on to the Somme where, in September 1916, tanks were deployed for the first time. The tour concludes with a study of Operation Overlord, the Allied Invasion of Europe in 1944, and the chance to consider how far tactics and technology had developed over the intervening years.

From musket to machine gun: Waterloo, Ypres & Dunkirk This three day tour is designed to help your students examine the British experience of warfare, from the Grand Armies of the Napoleonic era, through the stasis of Trench Warfare of the Western Front, to the development of Blitzkrieg theory and fall of France in 1940.

By exploring key battlefields, looking at the weaponry available to the armies of each period, and understanding the huge advances made in communications and mobility, our team of experienced guides will ensure your students will develop a far greater appreciation of exactly how the strategies and tactics of the day were determined by a whole range of factors.

The Second World WarStudy material available

When the world went to war for the second time in a generation few could have anticipated the cataclysm that would follow. The victories won in quick succession by German forces on battlefields across Europe meant that by the end of 1940 Britain stood alone, ready to ‘face the worst that the tyrant’s might and enmity can do’. It would be four long years before British troops would return in force to France, five years in which Britons lived with the threat of invasion and the terror of the Blitz.

Anglia is delighted to be able to offer a range of fully-guided tours both within the UK and abroad, each of which is designed specifically to further your students understanding of the causes, impact and consequences of this momentous event. The details of a small selection of these are given below.

The Experience of Warfare

Normandy Considered by many in the West to be the pivotal moment of the Second World War, D-Day, 6th June 1944, was the largest and most ambitious military operation ever staged. The successful landings paved the way for the invasion of Germany in 1945 and the eventual defeat of the Nazis.

Anglia Tours’ team of renowned expert guides bring to life the extraordinary story of this immense undertaking. Come and see where British airborne troops conducted two of the most audacious missions of the day, capturing the guns of the Merville Battery and the bridges over the rivers and canals flanking the operation; where US Rangers scaled the vertical cliffs of Pointe du Hoc to capture a seemingly impregnable position; where CSM Stan Hollis won the only VC awarded for action on D-Day in a story of remarkable individual bravery; and where American infantry suffered appalling casualties on ‘Bloody Omaha’.

All Anglia’s D-Day tours are tailored to your curriculum needs and location, allowing you to focus on the elements most relevant to your students.

The Home Front How did Britain cope with the ever present threat of invasion and air raids?

How did people respond to the Blitz and to food shortages?

And what impact did this have on morale at home?

These are all excellent questions, the answers to which will help your students to understand life on the Home Front. So why not let them ask those questions in person?

Each Anglia ‘WWII Living History’ event, led by an historical interpreter in period uniform, is tailored specifically to support your classroom based teaching. A wide range of themes can be covered, including ‘The Battle of Britain’, ‘The Blitz & Black-out’, ’Rationing’ and ‘The role of the Home Guard & the Air Raid Warden’. As well as having the chance to ask questions, your students will have an opportunity to dress in a selection of authentic period uniforms and handle a range of items such as ration cards, gas masks and clothing. There really is no better way to examine the Home Front close up.

In conjunction with Square Route Walks, Anglia is pleased to offer a walking tour of London devised to look at the impact of war on the Home Front. Visits to sites such as where the first bomb to hit the City landed enable your students to learn about the ‘Spirit of the Londoner’ and the damage suffered by many of London’s finest buildings. This tour can be combined with another visit – please contact us for a range of options.

Berlin to Auschwitz – The Road to the HolocaustIn January 1942, in the charming Villa Minoux on the shores of the Grosse Wannsee, a meeting took place. In such surroundings, far removed from the countryside of Eastern Europe, fifteen men under the direction of SS General Reinhard Heydrich, calmly planned the murder of 11 million people.

This tour, which combines a visit to the capital of the Third Reich, with the site of one of its most heinous crimes, will afford your students an opportunity to see how short the journey was from the relentless Nazi anti-Semitism rhetoric heard on the streets of Berlin to the gas chambers and crematoria of Auschwitz.

Krakow & AuschwitzThere are few names which carry the resonance as that of Auschwitz. Although the network of Concentration Camps established by the Nazi regime stretched across the breadth of occupied Europe, the three camps constructed just outside the small Polish town of Oświęcim, have come to symbolise the unparalleled crimes against humanity which were committed there.

Each Anglia visit to Auschwitz combines a full day at the Memorial & Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau, with the chance to meet and talk with a Holocaust Survivor or a recipient of the ‘Righteous Among the Nations’ award. This is a unique opportunity to engage with an individual who experienced the Nazi terror at first hand and learn more about this most difficult of subjects.

Whilst few European nations may have a history free from the taint of anti-Semitisim, such was the ferocity of the Holocaust that it stands apart as a singular event unlike any other. Almost from the very moment it seized power, Hitler’s regime took its first steps on the path which led, in just eight years, from boycott and expulsion, to ghettoisation and extermination. Such was the enormity of this seemingly inexorable process that its impact was felt, not only by Jewish communities throughout occupied Europe, but by peoples and nations across the world.

With visits to those locations where these unparalleled events were conceived, coordinated and carried out, Anglia remains committed to offering programmes which are designed specifically to help further your students’ understanding of the Holocaust.

Few cities embodied post-war Europe more than Berlin. Divided by 43km of wire and concrete, patrolled day and night by men who had been given a ‘shoot to kill’ order, those who lived in the shadow of the Berlin Wall found themselves on the front line of the Cold War.

Although it is now more than 20 years since the Wall fell, a significant amount of evidence of the Cold War remains visible in the city. From Check Point Charlie, site of the stand off between US and Russian tanks in October 1961, through to the Stasi Remand Prison in Hohenschoenhausen and the excellent Berlin Wall Documentation Centre on Bernauer Strasse, if you want your students to gain a real insight into the Cold War, there is no better place to go.

RussiaThe origins of the Cold War lie in the breakdown in relations between the USA and USSR, and in particular the mutual suspicion of their ideologically opposed systems.

Equally, to understand the end of the Cold War, it is essential to understand the internal pressures which led Premier Gorbachev to pursue the hugely controversial policies of Glasnost and Perestroika.

A visit to Moscow will allow students to explore the nature of Stalin’s dictatorship and the impact of Communism on the Soviet people, along with the tumultuous events of the late 1980s which led to the collapse of Communism and the end of the Cold War.

It is also possible to focus on earlier periods of history, including the events of the Revolutions of 1905 and 1917 and the civil war and in-fighting that led to the ascendancy of Stalin, especially by combining with a visit to St Petersburg.

PragueAn Anglia tour to Prague offers students a real opportunity to understand the impact of occupation and oppressive regimes along with a unique mixture of cultural experiences.

It is possible to combine a study of Nazi occupation – perhaps visiting the model Concentration Camp of Terezin and Lidice, the village liquidated in reprisal for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich – along with visits focussing upon the experiences of Prague during the Cold War. The harsh Communist regime established in 1948 provoked regular outbursts of liberal protest, such as the Prague Spring and the Velvet Revolution.

The Cold WarStudy material available

The political fault lines established across Continental Europe in the aftermath of the Second World War would come to dominate International Relations across the globe. Whilst the Cold War was not fought with conventional weapons and saw no direct military engagement between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, the struggle for supremacy called on all the military, economic and political resources available to each side. It was a struggle which was to define the latter half of the Twentieth Century.

For the generations which have grown up in the years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Anglia is pleased to offer a range of tours to sites on both sides of the former Iron Curtain, each of which is designed to further the understanding of this most complex of subjects.

“Wow, this trip has been phenomenal and I have really enjoyed it! I have learnt so much about Berlin and all the terrifying, mean and scary history behind it.”Student of St Faith’s School, Cambridge

IsraelThis tour will look at four important strands – Biblical, Historical, Geographical and Political – the combination of which will enable your students to understand Israel in the round. These four strands are intricately woven together and the tour will study all of them.

The political situation between Israel, the Palestinians and their near neighbours is ongoing today. The peace process still has a long way to go, but great strides are being made. The tour offers students the opportunity to meet and talk to young people from both sides of the conflict, the very people who are trying to make coexistence work. Israel is an incredibly beautiful place to visit with millions of tourists every year coming from all around the world to enjoy what it has to offer.

With the assistance of Israel Experts, a leading inbound tour operator with years of experience in the UK schools market, this tour is the experience of a lifetime. Their expertise, and the presence of an Anglia Tour Manager travelling with you from the UK, makes this an educational experience beyond compare.

Northern IrelandWinning the peace is a long process. When that process is played out on the streets of the UK over a period of thirty years it is important that students understand the background to the Troubles and its legacy. Fragile though that peace sometimes seems – it is working. In order to understand the Troubles it is important to hear from those whose lives were directly affected by it from all sides and to try and understand the context which gave rise to such differing views of a shared history.

Anglia is able to provide this experience by looking at the Troubles focusing on 1968-1972 allowing students to see where these events were played out. Students will meet members of both communities to discuss their views and experiences.

N. Ireland has changed beyond recognition, and both Derry/Londonderry and Belfast offer a huge amount for the visitor. The tour is an experience that engenders not only hope for the people of N. Ireland and across the world but also one that will enrich your students and their understanding of our islands’ history.

Winning the Peace“If you want to make peace you don’t talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies.”

Moshe Dayan’s quote defines the approach to ending conflict and whilst politicians posture and make speeches it is the ordinary people who learn how to co-exist despite their differences. In the past few decades great strides have been made, both in the Northern Ireland and the Israeli/Palestinian situation.

Under the banner of ‘Winning the Peace’ we are pleased and proud to be the only UK Schools Tours Operator to offer visits to both these locations. These are both educational and incredibly uplifting visits which allow you and your students to see beyond the news headlines to the enduring human spirit.
