VOLUME 85, ISSUE 9

INSIDE THIS ISSUE:

Growing in Our Faith, Maturing as Disciples A vital congregation is one that has disciples who make other

disciples. As we seek to make and mature disciples of Jesus Christ for the

transformation of the world, it is important to understand what a disciple is.

A simple way to say this is that a disciple is a follower of Jesus Christ for life who

is committed to:

Being part of the body of

Christ

- A life of worship

- A life of hospitality

Becoming more like Jesus

- A life opening to Jesus

- A life obeying Jesus

Joining Jesus in ministry

- A life of generosity

- A life of service

As people live into this vision of discipleship they go through five

discernible phases of growth which are:

1. Searching for meaning 2. Exploring Christ’s way

3. Beginning new life in Christ 4. Growing in our walk in Christ

5. Maturing all our life in Christ

Dr. Phil Maynard has developed a Real Discipleship Survey to help churches and

individuals understand where they are on their discipleship journey. The survey

measures: a life of worship, a life of hospitality, a life open to Jesus, a life of

obeying Jesus, a life of service, and a life of generosity. Upon taking the survey,

participants discover if they are exploring, beginning, growing, or maturing in

each of those categories.

Canfield UMC will be introduced to this survey during worship on October 22. During the Sunday

School hour, our speaker, Rev. Kelly Paul Brown, will be in the atrium to offer more information and

direction on how to participate in the Real Discipleship Survey. All youth and adults are invited to

attend!

A Journey Through Grief In A Pilgrim’s Almanac: Reflections for Each Day of the Year, Edward Hays tells a story of a food editor whom on the day before thanksgiving received a telephone call from a youthful sounding woman. The woman asked how long it takes to roast a 19-½ pound turkey. “Just a minute,” said the food editor as she turned to consult a chart on the wall in her office. “Thanks a lot!” said the caller as she hung up. That must have been some dinner! To believe that a turkey that large could be cooked in one minute is a sign of our times. Thanks to advanced technology, what once took days now takes only minutes, or even seconds. But some things, like a 19-½ pound turkey, still require time. Holiday meals take time, friendship takes time, education takes time —so does grief. The grief process not only takes time, but also requires much emotional, physical and spiritual energy. It is no wonder people who are grieving are tired and more susceptible to illness and depression. Sometimes just thinking about the upcoming holidays makes grieving people sick! While it appears that everyone else is happy, people who have lost a loved one dread the days between November and January. Feelings of loneliness, sadness and despair can seem overwhelming. While there are no magic formulas to make the pain (or the holidays) go away, there are things people who are grieving can do to cope and get through. Beginning October 10 through November 21 Canfield UMC will provide an seven-week faith-based grief education series, A Journey Through Grief. This series will be facilitated by Pastor Beth and co-facilitated by Judy Capirano. If you have experienced a death loss of someone close within the last two years and are willing to commit to receiving and giving support, please call Pastor Beth for more information and to register. Registration deadline is October 3 and is necessary to attend. October 10 to November 21 6:30pm to 8:30pm A Journey Through Grief series October 12 5:00pm to 6:00pm Congregational Life meeting (Parlor/Aldersgate) November 12 4th Quarter Birthday/Anniversary Celebration after 2nd service December 3 Advent Family Festival

Music Ministry

The Choir and Bell choir are back in session for the year. Both of these groups are a lot of fun to be involved with. We work weekly to prepare music for worship, but we have a great time doing it and experience a lot of Christian Fellowship in the process. If you've never sung in a church choir, or haven't recently, I encourage you to come try it out. Choir meets every Thursday from 7:30pm to 8:30pm, you do not have to be able to come every week, we encourage you to come whenever you can. Many of our members travel or miss for work and family obligations, and that is fine. We would love to have you anytime we can. I often hear people say that they don't know anything about music, and use that as an excuse not to join the choir. However, that is a great reason to join. You won't find a better place to learn about music and the art of singing then right here in Canfield UMC's choir. If you don't like to sing, but would still be interested in being involved, then maybe the bell choir is the place for you. We meet every Thursday from 6:15pm to 7:15pm. The ability to read music is a plus, but not a requirement, if you can count to 4 you can learn to play bells! Joyful Praise is our children's choir for children in Kindergarten through 6th grade. We will start rehearsals the first week of October and will meet every Thursday from 4:45pm to 5:45 pm. This is a fun time for the kids; we sing, dance, act, plus have snack every week. If you have a child in this age group or know of a child that might enjoy this time please come check it out on October 5. Hope you will consider joining one of our musical groups. Andrew Purdum

Canfield United Methodist Preschool Another THANK YOU for supplies given during August as mission to our Preschool and Youth Sunday School programs for the WHOLE school year! The 2017-2018 Preschool 2017-2018 year has begun. First and foremost, our teachers are skilled and nurturing and creative. Continuing support and appreciation go to Ellen Bennett, Ellen Van Dussen, Shirley Merritt, Lisa Helmick, Brenda Williams and Amy Cuffle. While they spend time creating classroom “communities” with the children and a positive learning atmosphere, we have plans for extra learning opportunities. The Canfield Fire Department will visit us and our classes will visit Operation Blessing as well as the Canfield Public Library. Our THREES will be visited by Julie Kercher from Operation Blessing and librarian Jane Adams from the Canfield Library. The PreK FIVES Class will visit the White House Fruit Farm. Officer Steve Garska, from the Canfield Police Department will visit shortly before Halloween, to help us know and remember safe practices as well as learn about these community helpers. We are excited to get to know our new children and their families, and to see the growth of children returning for another year! Janet Williams, Administrator
