Oil and gas substructure engineering for new build compression Arup Concept Elevating Platform (ACE) in 42m of water. The Malampaya Phase 3 (MP3) project includes gas compression platform to augment resource extraction for declining field. Scope includes a new-build platform bridge linked to the existing shallow water platform (SWP) concrete gravity substructure (CGS) previously designed by Arup. Engineering includes structural and foundation design for in-place stability in addition to mechanical engineering and naval architecture to confirm platform transport and install. Included in the scope are detailed engineering, design, and construction site supervision in the Philippines.

Arup is pushing boundaries in tunneling technology to ensure Lake Mead can provide water to Las Vegas even if lake levels continue to fall. As drought conditions continue in the area, Arup is leading the engineering design of a vital new intake tunnel at Lake Mead to safeguard future water quality and supply amid declining lake levels. The design for the intake structure in the lake bed reduces risk, cost and schedule. And due to the depth of the tunneling beneath the lakebed, the tunnel will be configured to work with high water pressures, at the limits of current technology.

Arup’s role in Sao Paulo’s Metro Line 4 includes involvement in acting as technical advisor and conducting technical due diligence on behalf of financiers of proposed metro projects in Sao Paulo. The deal is Brazil’s first PPP to achieve long-term financing in the international markets. Arup’s work was delivered in two stages, the ultimate objective being to assist the parties to structure the commercial terms, given the underlying technical risks, so that they could reach financial close amid very challenging credit market conditions. Now, a new stage of work begins, monitoring the procurement of rolling stock and the technical implementation.

Arup was part of the team that designed UT Houston’s first sustainable building. The nursing and biomedical sciences building is designed to mitigate embodied energy use and construction waste. Among low energy design features, Arup incorporated natural ventilation, the use of photovoltaic panels and rainwater collection systems with the aim of creating a zero carbon footprint building. Building systems also integrate with the façade to maximize daylight while minimizing effects on heating and cooling loads. Houston’s climate proved challenging, making utilizing natural ventilation throughout the year difficult. We investigated a variety of mechanical systems to create this efficient solution.
