Dear Friends: This year marks the 21st annual ceremony honoring heroic firefighters of this state who gave their lives in the line of duty protecting the lives of their fellow human beings. Today, we gather again to commemorate 28 brave and noble firefighters by adding their names to the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial Wall in Albany.

Each of these men are singularly courageous individuals who exemplify the best of New Yorkers and we can never forget their sacrifice and service. We add their names to those of 2,524 fallen firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in facing the dangers of fire to keep communities and people across our state safe.

As we honor these heroes, we also thank the more than 100,000 brave men and women who continually put themselves at risk to save lives in our communities. Every day, these firefighters admirably serve our citizens to protect them and their loved ones from harm. We thank all of them for their extraordinary efforts and dedication, and pray for their safety as they carry out their duties.

Today is also a day to stand proudly with the families, friends, and colleagues who have lost a member of the fire service and we offer our deepest sympathies and prayers to them. We hope they are able to find a measure of comfort in knowing that we will never forget the sacrifice made by their loved one in the line of duty.

    Sincerely,
