XX. PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

2002- Family Physician, University of Alberta Hospital Family Medicine Clinic providing office services plus rotating duties on the Family Medicine Acute Care Unit. I maintain privileges at University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton General Hospital, (nursing home) and was re-evaluated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta’s PAR program in 2000 and 2005. I am a member of the Regional Medical Staff Association as well as the staff associations at UAH. Initially providing six clinics a week, I reduced my schedule in 2006 so that at present, I provide three half days in the clinic and no in-patient care. I provide clinical teaching to medical residents and students, international graduates, nurse practitioner students, nursing or pharmacy students whenever I am seeing patients.

1995-2006 Capital Care Grandview Orthopaedic Sub-Acute Unit,daily rounds post-operative patient care.Four times nominated for the Capital Care GEM award (Going the Extra Mile) Award 2005

1992-2002 Family physician in Grey Nuns Family Medicine Centre. Clinical activities comprised six half days a week in the office with residents, and care of patients in hospital in medicine, obstetric, paediatric, palliative care and emergency settings. Patients were also seen in nursing homes and on house-calls. During this time the centre developed collaborations with pharmacy and dietetic colleagues and instituted nurse-run asthma and diabetic clinics. As well as performing my own minor surgery procedures, I have performed over 70 laryngoscopies in the clinic.

I participated in the Alberta Medical Association’s Rural Weekend Locum program on eight weekends - to acquire a flavour of rural practice in Alberta.

1980-1992 Senior Partner in general practice. Established a primary care team which included office nurse, a midwife, public health nurses, psychiatric social worker, trainee. Physicians and three principal general practitioners. Initiated minor surgery in the office, a nurse-run asthma clinic, a shared care physician/nurse diabetic clinic, well man and well woman clinics, nurse-run health promotion sessions, also paediatric and influenza immunization clinics. Practice population was 5200 patients served from a main clinic and two branch clinics in outlying villages.

1982-1983 Clinical Fellow in Family Medicine, Byron Family Medicine Centre, London, Ontario. Three days a week clinical patient care as part of my Masters Program at UWO. Under supervision of Dr J Sangster.

1979-1988 Trainer in General Practice, supervising trainees (residents) in the Vocational Training Scheme.

1975 Principal in General Practice, Highbridge, Somerset, UK. A semi-rural practice with a wide catchment area. Clinical activities included office practice house calls, hospital inpatients, emergency department duties, obstetric deliveries, nursing homes (one of which was for the deaf/blind) palliative home care and on-call duties with the Somerset and Avon Voluntary Emergency Service attending highway accidents and other emergencies.
