We sadly acknowledge the passing of Dr. Peter S. Craig, November 2009. His

research has extended our knowledge of the Friend family immensely. Dr. Craig was

always ready to share his knowledge by assisting all researchers. He was extremely

patience with “beginners” in genealogy and very precise in his own work, checking time

and again for possible updates and corrections. Dr. Craig will be deeply missed by many

who came to know him through the Friend reseach.

Introduction

The Europeans that traveled to the New World in the early 17th century did so at

great risk. Their pioneering spirit and sense of adventure drew them away from the

known world and sent them into a pristine environment filled with opportunity and

hardships. It is difficult to imagine the Eastern United States as a wilderness; yet, this

region was a vast uncharted territory for these explorers. Our ancestors survived

harrowing ordeals as well as personal tragedies when venturing into this new world.

Why did these people risk so much? We believe our ancestors came to America for a

better way of life for themselves and future generations. We are the fortunate recipients

of those actions and are eternally grateful.

Nils Larsson Friend (Frande) was one of those early adventurers who traveled

from Sweden to Upland (West Chester, PA) in 1648. Nils Friend’s adventurous spirit was

instilled in his children who were the first “New Americans” to explore Southern

Pennsylvania, Western Maryland and Virginia. This book will focus on Andrew Friend

(Anders Nilsson Frande), son of Nils Larsson Friend (Frande) and many of his

descendants. The records of Andrew Friend and his family are vast and unfortunately,

contradictory at times. We have attempted to collect and correlate the information that

has been published to date. It is difficult to sort between facts and the logical conjectures

of past Friend researchers. First and foremost, there is a great deal of confusion

concerning the wife, wives and children of Andrew Friend. Many researchers believe

Andrew Friend had one wife, either a Miss Rambo or Rebecca Helm. Other suggests that

both women were the wives of Andrew Friend, while a few propose that Andrew Friend

had a third wife (Isabel Stidham/ Steddom). We have found multiple combinations of the

three different women as wives. It would appear that a two-wife theory is most often

presented, although we can find no clear consensus or conformation on the matter. The

number of children Andrew may have fathered and the relationship to the mother or

mothers is an entirely different dilemma. After a great deal of thought, we do not feel

confident in any attempt to sort out the mother/ child relationships. There appear to be

three children (Mary, Israel and Charles) commonly presented with most histories of

Andrew Friend. We have focused on these three, although we do not discount the

probability that there were more children.

The first edition of this work was published in 2006 and contained fewer than two

hundred pages. We found the available information on Andrew Friend had expanded

exponentially, exceeding well over fifteen thousand pages when compiling this edition.

Organizing this information has proven to be a challenge. We have decided this work will

focus on Andrew Friend, his daughter Mary (Marie), his son Israel Friend as well as

Israel’s children, Jonas, Catherine and Mary Friend. Jonas and his descendants will

comprise the majority of the book. Andrew Friend’s son Charles as well as several

grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren will be chronicled in

their own books or series because of the volume of material. These people and their

immediate families will be briefly outlined in the book. Andrew Friend’s grandsons,

Jacob Friend and Charles Friend, the sons of Israel Friend, will be presented in two

separate series known as Jacob Friend, Elizabeth Skidmore and Their Descendants

and Charles Friend of Missouri, Son of Israel Friend, respectively. While

Andrew Friend’s grandson, Jonas Friend will be covered in this book, his daughters,

Nancy and Sarah (the great granddaughters of Andrew Friend) will presented in:

William Wilson, Jr. and Their Descendants. Andrew Friend’s great great

This book shall be offered in an outline format, with numerous footnotes to

maintain and clarify the lineages. We have attempted to chronicle a part of the life of

Andrew Friend and his descendants in the hope of preserving this information before it

lost to the winds of time.

1. There is an ongoing debate among Friend researchers as to the name and/or names of Andrew Friend’s wives. The ‘two wife history’ is most often presented. Dr. Peter Craig has presented the only documentation, we have found, that lists Andrew Friend’s wife was Isabel. Dr. Craig theorized that Isabel was probably the second wife. To err on the side of caution, we will present all three wives. The relationship of the mother(s) to children is even more varied. Unfortunately, we cannot determine the mother/ child links. Some researchers have listed up to ten offspring, yet three children (Mary, Israel and Charles) are most commonly seen with most histories. We believe Andrew had more than three children, yet we did not feel comfortable in presenting any more.

Anders "Andrew" Friend/Frände was born circa 1659 at Upland, Chester Co. (now Delaware), PA. He was sixteen years old by November 1677, when he was listed as tydable by the Upland Court, indicating that his birth was in 1661 at the latest. He was named a defendant (as Andreas Nielson) in a lawsuit at the Upland Court on 13 September 1681, suggesting that he was 21 by that time. As Anders Frende, he is shown as heading a household of four persons in May 1693. Thus, he appears to have been married with two children by this time. The name of his wife at that time is not reported. Later, his wife's name was shown to be Isabel. However, this given name is not found among his descendants, which suggests that she was his second wife. The eldest known surviving son of Andrew Friend was named Israel Friend. In 1693 Andrew Friend's family lived in Ridley Twp, adjacent to his mother and siblings. By 1697, however, he was a resident of New Castle Co, DE. He probably then lived on part of his late father's 800 acre tract, Oak Hill, east of Red Clay Creek, a tributary of Christina Creek. By 1710, Andrew Friend had moved to North East, Cecil Co, Maryland, on a tributary to the Chesapeake Bay. This is shown by the diary of the Swedish minister, Andreas Sandel, who had succeeded Andreas Rudman as pastor of Gloria Dei (Old Swedes) Church at Wicaco (Philadelphia) in 1703. And in 1740 he was living with his son Israel Friend, near Harper's Ferry, VA.

pp: 84: Anders Nilsson Frande (Friend) (living with #85 [Nils Larsson Friend (Frande)] Up until 1693, and for a period thereafter, Anders split his time between Chester County and West Jersey, where he was taxed for 200 acres in Andrew Robeson's "New Stockholm" tract in 1687. This West Jersey association plus the name given to his eldest surviving son (Israel) suggests that his first wife was a daughter of Israel Helm (#65).

47 At the request of George Beall, the following Deed was enrolled, November the twenty-seventh day Anno Domini, Seventeen Hundred and Thirty: Whereas be it known to all manner of persons whom it may concern, that we, Cunnawchahala, Taw Wenaw, Captain Sivilie, Taile Hangee, Shoe Hays and Callakahahatt, being Kings and Rullers of the five Nations for natural love and affection, we bear to our brother Israel Friend, we give unto him and heirs, executors, administrators and assigns a certain piece of land, lying and being upon Potomack River, beginning at the mouth of Audictum Creek at Box Elders, marked with three notches one every side and to run up the said river two hundred shoots as far as an arrow can be flung out of a bow and is to be one hundred shoots right back from the river so containing its square till it intersects with the said creek again, with aforesaid land against the mouth of the creek which said land we the said Indians and our heirs do warrant and forever defend unto the said Israel Friend, his heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns forever with all the appurtenances there-unto belonging, as fishing, fowling, hawking, hunting, and all other privileges thereunto belonging, with paying unto some of us, two ears of Indian corn for every year, if demanded.

About the Authors

Patricia Ann (Friend) Thompson was born and raised in Garrett County,

Maryland. Pat’s first book on the Friend family was John Friend Sr. of Friendsville,

MD (2007), the patriarch of the Friend Family in Garrett County Maryland. Patricia is a

descended from of John Friend Sr. through Susannah Friend’s brothers John Jr. and

Charles. Patricia is a descendant of numerous Garrett County families such as Enlow,

Harvey, Tasker, Murphy, Upole and Thrasher. Pat is a Life Member (#889) of the FFAA

and currently serves as 1st Vice President of the organization. Pat is a member (#854484)

of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Youghiogheny

Glades Chapter (through John Friend Sr.) and a member of The Swedish Colonial

Society. Pat currently lives in Frederick County, Maryland with husband, John (Scoop)

Thompson and their three dogs.

Patrick Thomas Smith was born in Oakland, Maryland and grew up in Western

Maryland. Pat is a graduate of Frostburg State College (B.S.), West Virginia University

(M.S.) and Texas A&M University (Ph.D.). Pat is also descended through

Susannah Friend’s brothers John Jr., Charles, and Joseph, as well as numerous Garrett

County families such as Echard, Harvey, Hinebaugh, Glotfelty, McRobie and Wilson.

Pat’s first book on the Garrett County Friends was The Maps and Papers of William

H.H. Friend. Pat is currently the 2nd vice president of the FFAA as well as a Life

Member (#1102). Pat lives in Frederick County, Maryland with his wife, Roxanne and

daughter Emma Gustav Smith.
