Outline

1. Scope/vision/who we are

2. Intro to situation awareness

• Analyze the effectiveness of information delivery systems in mining equipment and develop a unified display design, to mitigate against the proliferation of screens within equipment cabs.

• Focus on shovel displays; however it should be noted that this work is expected to form the foundation for similar work with other equipment in the future.

The scope of the SA (situation awareness) working

group is to:

Who we are: industry representation

What is situation awareness?

Situation Awareness is the Perception of elements in the environment within a volume of time and space, the Comprehension of their meaning,

and the Projection of their status in the near future.

• Each new technology has been added to the cab with its own display

• Not aligned with operator FOV

• Overloads operator’s limited attention

Workflow

Task 1 – Conduct SA Requirements Analysis

Contractor will determine the SA requirements for Shovel Operators using a Goal-Directed Task Analysis process

Task 2 – Design User Interfaces for Shovel Operators

Based on the GDTAs developed in Task 1, SA Technologies will design storyboard display designs shovel operations to convey the needed information.

Task 3 - Conduct Initial User Review and feedback on the storyboard displays

Aug. 21-23, 2012

Sept. 5-6, 2012

• Highland Valley Copper Mine - Teck near Kamloops, BC, Canada

• Goldstrike Mine - Barrick near Elko, NV, U.S.A.

• Interviewed 10 Shovel Operators • 3 on-the-job • 4 had ~15 years experience • 2 were new operators

• Visited 4 Shovels

• CAT/Bucyrus (495HR, …) • P&H (4100, 2800) • Observed the operating environment for environmental analysis

• Observed existing systems

• MMS, MotionMetrics, Wenco, CAT CAES, AccuWeigh, P&H/Bucyrus/Komatsu onboard systems, Cameras, Radios

Goal Directed Task Analysis (GDTA) sample

results

Goal Captures user’s high-level goals

Sub-Goal Goals are decomposed into sub-goals for higher fidelity

Decision For optimal decision-making support, user’s decisions are explicitly documented

Information Requirements SA requirements are listed hierarchically. Typical indentations explained below: Left-most indent: Level 3 SA (Projection) Middle level(s): Level 2 SA (Comprehension) Right-most level(s): Level 1 SA (Perception)

Task 3 – Operator feedback and UI adjustments

• Proposed shovel UI was presented to working group members- SME’s from OEMs/OTMs/mining • Two cognitive walkthroughs were conducted with shovel operators

• 12/04/2012 – Teck • 12/14/2012 – Barrick

• Feedback led to a few adjustments • Customizability • Access to performance statistics

• ‘Means to an end’ • alarm inventory (working group brainstorm) • alarm prioritization (SA Tech.) • alarm delivery (SA Tech.)

• Proof of concept

• VNC’s? • Standard API?

• Challenges

• Collaboration amongst competitors • Long-term vision: who will ‘own’ the interface?

Next steps
