5 |Case study: Dry Creek salt fieldBetter Data Collection: Supporting Science and Education with Flexible Cloud-Based Solutions | Andrew Baker, Lintern Fairbrother & Brendan SpeetThe study area comprised of approximately 5000 ha of coastal fringe land that extended from Dry Creek (10 km north of Adelaide CBD) to Middle Beach, 30 km north

Site had been used to produce salt for approximately 90 years

CSIRO were engaged to help facilitate environmentally sensitive site closure through:Aquatic and terrestrial hazard assessmentGeophysical investigations (LiDAR, Bathymetry and Sub-Bottom Profiling)Geochemical investigations (Acid Sulfate Soils)

A narrow-beam Sub-Bottom Profiling (SBP) was used to visualise sediment structures beneath the bed of the ponds (5 m)Approximately 300 km of SBP lines were acquired

7 |The challengeGround truth 300 km of Sub-Bottom Profiling (SBP) data by physically differentiating between sedimentary layers:Collection of approximately 200 (1000 samples) rapid exploratory subaqueous soil profilesGeolocation of ground truthing sites (DGPS)Photographs of each coreMorphological descriptionsCollection of a small sub-sample from each morphological layerAssessment of occurrence and thickness of MBO layers using waterproof cameraLaboratory investigationsData processing and interpretationBetter Data Collection: Supporting Science and Education with Flexible Cloud-Based Solutions | Andrew Baker, Lintern Fairbrother & Brendan Speet

9 |Field Data Collection

All project data are stored in Google Drive

Google Earth used for fieldwork planning, infield navigation and data presentation to clients and stakeholders

Android phone used for ALL field data collection, navigation, geolocation, photography, communication, data storage and data upload to Google Drive

Trimble R1 GNSS receiver is linked to android phone via Bluetooth to facilitate sub-metre accuracy for all GPS enabled apps

Open Data Kit (ODK) replaces traditional field equipment (e.g. field notebook, camera, GPS and sample labels) and enables more uniform, detailed and error free data collection

Field data uploaded in real time to Google Drive and displayed/analysed using Google sheets and Google fusion tables

11 |Benefits of Approach:

Data available anywhere to all members of project team.Seamless integration with Google Earth and Fusion tables

Seamless integration with Google Drive, free and accessible to clients and stakeholders

Cheap, runs open source apps, waterproof, quality camera, outdoor visible screen expandable data storage and highly accurate GPS (when tethered to Trimble R1)

Sub-metre accuracy for all GPS enabled apps: approximate saving of $20k compared to traditional DGPS system

Enables more uniform, detailed and error free data collection. Simplification of field data collection has reduced the field team from 4 to 2 and resulted in a project saving of $151k

Project team members and clients can view data in near real time. Enables rapid analyses, reporting and efficient planning of laboratory staffing Better Data Collection: Supporting Science and Education with Flexible Cloud-Based Solutions | Andrew Baker, Lintern Fairbrother & Brendan Speet

13 |What we learnt Embracing technology can result in better, accurate and more cost effective data collection Solutions must be: intuitive, flexible and funpreferably open source and scalable Each solution is likely to be unique to individuals and scenarios Ask advice and discuss your challenges whenever you can; it is amazing who might have a bright idea that could save you time, effort and money Better Data Collection: Supporting Science and Education with Flexible Cloud-Based Solutions | Andrew Baker, Lintern Fairbrother & Brendan Speet
