Question 2: how does your media product represent particular social groups?

Male characters only…

Gender:

We have represented gender through showing the masculinity and brutality of men. Men are shown in our piece as being hard

and brutal, and the lack of women reinforces the fact that it is a ‘mans world’. This is very conventional to our genre. Women

were not aloud to be in the Mafia, and therefore they are not in our sequence.

Slight high angle shot of Vinny.

The violence and brutality is conventional to our genre. This is shown through the slow motion shot of a gun at the very beginning

and the close up of petrol being poured over Vinny. There is also a sense of betrayal amongst men, which is conventional toour genre also. All the men clearly have a sense of power, however this power is distributed unevenly. In our piece Vinny is

less powerful than Tony. This is shown through the high angle shot as Vinny says ‘you’ve hit nothing’. The digetic sound of his

dialogue covey’s him to be powerful and confident, however the angle suggests otherwise. The slight high angle reflects his

vulnerability. This is foreshadowing his lack of power against Tony also as he later is seen tied up.

Male characters only…

Class:

This screen shot shows how the men are dressed very smartly. This is representing them

as being of a higher class. They are all very clean cut, wearing sharp suits and looking

very much like businessmen. This adheres to all mafia films. The family always has

status and always has class, for example in the godfather Vito Corleonon’s family aredressed similar to our actors.

The expensive brandy bottle also reflects their class. There is a slow motion close up during

the titles of a fancy class with brandy in it, this is reflecting their high class as they drink

expensive Alcohols. The close up allowed us to show how ‘posh’ and classy the glass

was.

• Ethnicity:

• All the men are white, and the reason for this was that Mafia Family’s must

• be of Italian descendants. We represent white men of an upper class as both

• calm and relaxed (Biagio), but also very hotheaded through the use of swearing ( Johnny).

• This is conventional to our genre because in Mafia films the Mobster can be violent and

• aggressive when handling business but also very friendly and relaxed when with family• members. This is an example of the narrative theory Binary oppositions. Johnny and

• Biagio’s personalities are completely juxtaposing. Biagio only say’s ‘let them finish’

• throughout the whole piece where as Johnny swears and shouts.

Profession:

• The digetic sound of them talking about ‘what happened last night’ and ‘who told the cops’ is greatly important towardsrepresenting these people as being involved in illegal transactions. We represented their professions as not being at all legit. They clearly delve into criminal activity.

•

• Because they are talking about what happened last night this does not start at a ‘happy equilibrium’, in relation to Todorov’s theory. This is conventional to our genre as films like Casino do hot start where there is a happy medium, in Casino Sam isblown up at the films opening. This suggests that their profession has already got them into a mess.

Our editing technique of jump cutting during the torture

scene represents how sharp and cold and uneasy their line of

work is. It also enhances the brutality of it, as the audience

experiences such hard and brutal cuts between shots.

1. This screen shot here is off Biagio. He is an example of

the Ethnicity represented in our piece as being a violent,

aggressive race that are part of a crime organization. He

looks like a white, Italian male.

2. Biagio also exemplifies Binary opposites through his

characteristics.

His mental state is completely opposite to Johnny’s andthis is clearly shown through his tone of voice and dialogue

in our sequence.
