Program Learning Outcome ReflectionCommitment to Social JusticeWhen I enrolled at Loyola, I knew I was required to take the Multiculturalism for Social Justice course, but I was unaware of what exactly to expect. The Photo Elicitation Project was an assignment that sought to help students increase their own understanding of conceptual foundations associated with social justice, as well as to articulate a personal philosophy of social justice. In reviewing this assignment, it is clear that I was able to develop my understanding of the conceptual foundations, discover new ways of knowing, and begin to develop my own personal commitment to serving others and creating a socially just world.Throughout the course, my understanding of social justice moved from a perspective in which I focused on large, organized groups and campaigns to individual commitment and actions. Through readings, class discussions, and this project, I learned that social justice can result from just one individual taking action. I learned that social justice is about not just recognizing difference, but celebrating it, and that, sometimes, it only takes a conversation do to so. I learned that social justice is not simply about allyship, but about intentional advocacy, and that as a higher education professional and a citizen of the world, I have an obligation to be an advocate. This assignment reflects my development of efficacy and understanding of how I, as one person, can demonstrate a lifelong commitment to social justice. The photos in this project represent my understanding of social justice, oppression, and privilege. In taking these photos and reflecting on them, I learned that the work of social justice educators is no easy feat. However, I have also learned the importance of embracing the struggle and that I must cultivate critical hope in the pursuit of a better world. I know my learning is never finished, and I am committed to further developing my understanding of social justice as a new professional in the field of higher education and student affairs.
