Ranking Academic Institutions

5. Engage immediately

4. Will engage

3. Warrants a close look

2. Mild-Medium Interest – maybe

1. Archived – ‘down the road’ only

My rankings – Open to Suggestions

1. A few were obvious (i.e., opportunity abounds at Conestoga, but is ‘time sensitive)

2. Considered distance education programs somewhat higher as they are already working ‘in the online environment’

3. Programs that have dedicated diplomas/certificates generally ranked higher

4. How long has the program been in existence (and is it successful or just starting out)

5. I tend to want to put everyone at a 5 or 4, so I will reconsider as I learn more and make contact

The Literature/The Search There have been a number of reports on emergency management education in Canada,

beginning in about 2003.

The reports (most done for the Government of Canada) generally indicate that this has been a rapidly emerging field of study

In 2003, there were ‘scattered and few’ Colleges & Universities providing education programs, in 2011, there are significantly more

The last report I could find (so far), was 2008, and with the rapidity with which the field is emerging, I imagine some of their information is out-of-date

The programs listed here have been gathered from the Literature (published reports), general Google searches and exploring individual institutions that I am familiar with or who I have previously talked to regarding their Emergency Management programs

Big cities and urban centres are more likely to have programs (ie, Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax). The middle of Canada and the Maritimes are a bit behind

Starting International list, but will take more time to really figure out who we want to partner with (or we will be overwhelmed by sheer volume)

This list is most likely not exhaustive – I anticipate that I will learn of other programs in existence. Please let me know what I’m missing!
