The Theorists and TheoriesMalcolm Shepherd Knowles (1913 1997)Andragogy: The art and science of adult learningRobert Mills Gagn (1916 2002)Conditions of Learning ...I think, pretty much all my life, my purpose in doing research has been, to find, how human learning can be made more affective and more efficient (Gagn, 1980)

Thank you, sir, and we are grateful for that.

Andragogy, or otherwise known as the art and science of adult learning, is a theory attributed to Malcolm Shepherd Knowles, while Robert Mills Gagn is responsible for the Theory of Learning or known as the Conditions of Learning.

What you already know MaybeAre these the 4 principals of adult learning?Involvement Adults want to be a part of the planning and assessment of their own instruction.2. Experience Experiences both positive and negative creates an opportunity for learning.3. Relevance and Importance Adults want their learning to be immediately useful and have an effect on their jobs and personal lives. 4. Problem Orientated Adults want their learning to focus on problem solving, not fancy or wordy content-oriented. Choose onePrincipals

Now, lets have a look at what you might already know. According to Knowles, these are the 4 principals of adult learning. Or are they?

Read through them and decide for yourself. Then hover over the answer best suited to your opinion, to see your result.4

2. Adult Learner ExperienceMaturity generates a collection of life experiences, which becomes a great learning resource.

The second assumption is regarding the adult learners experience, it supposes that maturity

3. Readiness to Learn

The learners readiness or want to learn becomes more related to social roles and needs.

4. Orientation to LearningKnowledge application becomes immediate. Therefore, he enters into education with a problem-centered orientation to learning (Knowles, 1973, p.48).

The forth assumption is the idea that an adults orientation to learning changes and knowledge application becomes immediate. Knowles supposes that adults enter

Why use this theory for my course?

Audience: Between ages 30-65 and very global.

Nature of Course:Training course, which needs to be applieddirectly to their workplace.

Why did I choose Andragogy as my main theory? The online course I will be designing has the following elements:The audience will consist of adults between the ages of 30 and 65 from various countries. The very nature of this course is a training course that must be applied directly into the learners work environment. Both these theories will facilitate a strong course design concept in this case.Image:Self-created in PowerPoint.

Did you rememberto think about how my theory is also being applied right now?

OK I know I am not Gagn but lets try: Did you though Go to the next slide and decide if you agree with Knowles.14

Do you think these theories apply to my course creation and adult learning?

If most of the information in this presentation applies to you as an adult learner, you can safely say:YES!

Thank you for your participation!
