Greene County Salute to VeteransRick Black, veteran of the Vietnam War and Senior Vice President of VFW Post No. 4793, spearheaded the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall project beginning in February of 2016. Once the wall was secured and the fairgrounds obtained - thanks to the Greene County Commissioners - various individuals formed the Greene County Salute to Veterans committee to organize the event. Black is the chairman of the committee.Black’s goal was to offer the opportunity for the tri-state area to honor and recognize those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam War, especially since not all can make the trip to see the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C.“I hope that people will be able to take the opportunity and honor those who made great sacrifices so that we could have a better life,” said Black.

Vietnam Veterans MemorialLocated north of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is free to visit and open 24 hours a day. The memorial includes the names of more than 58,000 servicemen and women who gave their lives in service in the Vietnam Conflict. The memorial also includes “The Three Servicemen” statue and the Vietnam Women’s Memorial. The memorial is maintained by the U.S. National Park Service and recieves around 3 million visitors each year. The Memorial Wall was designed by American architect Maya Lin and completed in 1982. The Memorial Wall is made up of two 246-foot-9-inch long gabbro walls, etched with the names of servicemen being honored in panels of horizontal rows with regular typeface and spacing. At the apex where they meet, the height is 10.1 feet and taper to 8 inches at their extremities. As of 2013, there are 58,286 names listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Approximately 1,200 of these are listed as missing (MIAs, POWs, and others). The names are arranged chronologically by date of casualty. The first names appear at the center of the wall at the top of panel 1E. The panels are filled like pages of a journal listing the men and women’s names as they fell. Upon reaching the farthest east end of the memorial at panel 70E, the pattern continues from the far west end of the memorial at panel 70W, continuing back to the center at panel 1W. In this manner, the memorial evokes a theme of closure or completion; the first are with the last. For more information, please visit www.nps.gov.

The Vietnam Traveling Memorial WallOur Traveling Memorial is a 3/5 scale of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. It stands 6 feet tall at the center and covers almost 300 feet from end to end. This Traveling Memorial stands as a reminder of the great sacrifices made during the Vietnam War. It was made for the purpose of helping heal and rekindle friendships and to allow people the opportunity to visit loved ones in their hometown who otherwise may not be able to make the trip to Washington, D.C.For more information, please visit www.travelingwall.us.
