Evaluating Production

Across a Spectrum:

Lessons of our

Proprietary Ultimate

Quantitative Baseline

Stat Our “UQB” category (Ultimate Quantitative Baseline) on our draft board calculates the standard deviation from the mean in all relevant hockey categories. In simple English, imagine a spectrum going across from left to right, with negative numbers on the left side, a “zero” in the middle and positive numbers on the right. We utilize this statistic for football, baseball, basketball, hockey and NASCAR as well as hoops. For hockey, we use all of the standard fantasy categories listed on the draft board to factor in for this statistical compilation. A player’s performance in each category is plotted on one of these spectrums, with the most valuable players putting up most of their numbers on the most of their numbers on the positive side. Then, we add up the totals of every category, positive and negative. By using this tool, we can identify not merely how they performed, but how valuable their performances were in each category. Truly, this statistic serves as the ultimate baseline for the previous season’s production.

^ The top tiers at forward are far shallower than at guard, so plan accordingly. ^ Just like last year, more than half of the owners (six) in a 10-team league will end up with a top-flight center, assuming each takes one of them. The second tier is very deep without much difference between the players involved – so try to get a top-tier starter, but if you don’t, then be patient getting two from the next level.

Don’t Be That Guy ^ Don’t sleep on stat-sheet fillers who aren’t as well-publicized as some of the megastars. Examples include Gorgui Jieng, Patrick Beverley and Robert Covington. ^ Don’t show up unprepared to deal with the specificities of your league’s scoring system. Be prepared on all of the details. ^ Don’t “punt” categories in a rotisserie league. You must try to be competitive in all areas in order to win. ^ Don’t assemble too many injury question marks.

Suggested League Guidelines

We recommend that you hold your auction or serpentine-style draft with 10 owners, selecting 12 players (4 guards, 4 forwards, 2 centers). In case of an auction, use a financial system that allots an average of $11 per player. Our preferred style of play is head-to-head rotisserie, in which teams compete on a week-to-week head-up basis. Recommended categories are points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, 3-pointers, 3-point percentage, field goal percentage, free throw percentage and least turnovers. First place in each category would yield 10 points, second place 9 points, etc. A rotating tiebreaker category should be utilized in the case of a 5-5 category tie. The starting lineup should consist of 2 guards, 2 forwards and 1 center.

College Hoops Fantasy Team Game Suggested Guidelines & Draft Board ^ A standard serpentine-style draft serves as the best place to begin. ^ The ideal distribution of talent would be as follows: 5 teams drafted by 8 owners, 6 teams drafted by 7 owners, 7 teams drafted by 6 owners or 8 teams drafted by 5 owners. ^ Points should be divided equally between success in the regular season/conference tournaments and in the NCAA tournament. ^ Regular season point distribution should come in the form of a "snapshot" of the Associated Press Top 25 poll on the following dates: January 4, January 20, February 1, February 15 and March 1. On those dates, points would be allocated in the following manner: 1st place (100 points), 2nd place (94 points), 3rd place (91 points), 4th place (88 points), 5th place (85 points), 6th place (78 points), 7th place (75 points), 8th place (72 points), 9th place (68 points), 10th place (65 points), 11th place (58 points), 12th place (55 points), 13th place (52 points), 14th place (48 points), 15th place (45 points), 16th place (40 points), 17th place (36 points), 18th place (32 points), 19th place (28 points), 20th place (25 points), 21th place (22 points), 22nd place (18 points), 23rd place (15 points), 24th place (12 points), 25th place (10 points). Additionally, 90 points are to be awarded to the winner of a regular season conference title and an additional 90 points to the winner of a conference title tournament. ^ The other half of the points, in the form of NCAA tournament points, are to be distributed as follows: 50 points for qualifying for the tournament, 100 points for one of your teams qualifying as a #1, #2, #3, #4 seed in any region, 40 points for qualifying as a #5, #6, #7 or #8 seed in any region, 40 points for winning a first-round tournament game, 75 points for winning a second-round tournament game, 150 points for winning a third-round tournament game, 175 for winning a regional final game, 250 points for winning a national semifinal game and 500 points for winning the national title.

ROUND 1: Nobody really went off the board here. ROUND 2: And there it is: Ben, Jason and Russ go a bit off the board. ROUND 3: Samm reunites Lebron and Kyrie! Nate’s 1-2-3 core might be the most explosive. ROUND 4: Samm got the best value of the draft so far. Rick gets Raptor backcourt synergy. ROUND 5: Big value for Rick with Porzingis. ROUND 6: Jason and Jeff picked up huge value with the dropping Harris and Hayward. ROUND 7: This was a round for sopping up frontcourt talent. ROUNDS 8-12: Hayes, Okongwu, Thybulle, Toppin, Ball, Sexton, Porter Jr., Herro, Trent Jr. and Allen: tons of young upside.

2020-21 Team UQB Rankings

FantasyDrafthelp.com and The FDH Lounge are expanding the UQB concept to team sports. Our rankings are a mashup of the following measures: a strength of schedule metric, offensive rating, defensive rating, EFG, TS%, Asst/TO ratio, 3% and a modified Win Share formula.

Top 10 For The Next 10

1 Luka Doncic 2 Zion Williamson 3 Donovan Mitchell 4 Jayson Tatum 5Giannis Antetokounmpo 6 Jamal Murray 7 Ja Morant 8 Trae Young 9 Bam Adebayo 10 Devin Booker

The FDH Top 10 for the Next 10 is a list attempting to identify the best players in the league -- not necessarily in a pure fantasy sense -- over the course of the entire next decade. It's not a pure 25-and-under draft, but it skews heavily in that direction because most big-time stars are past their primes in their late 30s. Players who are both very young and very skilled already have the biggest edges.

The Future Is Gonna Be Awesome

(But It’s Probably Not Here Yet) By Rick Morris/The FDH Lounge In the NBA bubble this past summer/fall, plenty of green shoots were popping up from the floorboards of the Magic Kingdom. Luka Doncic got to a level that few second-year franchise players ever reach. Phoenix’s entire young core seemed to grow exponentially. Michael Porter Jr. played a major role in catapulting the Nuggets to the Western Conference Finals. The son of the “Shaq of the MAC,” Gary Trent, Jr., similarly stepped up for Portland. And who can forget about the epic Jamal Murray/Donovan Mitchell duals? In The FDH Lounge, we’ve been forecasting for awhile now that the 2020s would be a time of, not parity, exactly, but a larger top tier than we’re generally used to seeing. Out of a possible 20 teams, here’s the number of different teams making the NBA Finals in each decade: 2010s 9 2000s 11 1990s 12 (CONTINUED ON PAGE 11)

The Future Is Gonna Be Awesome

(But It’s Probably Not Here Yet)

(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10) 1980s 5 1970s 10 1960s 5 1950s 8 Given that there are at minimum 6-8 teams who have a good chance to win an NBA championship in the 2020s as things stand at this time, there’s reason to think that there could be a new record of 13 teams making the Finals this decade – or, there was before the climax to last season and then the offseason, anyway. Lebron James and Anthony Davis decided that the future hasn’t supplanted them yet, taking home the 2020 NBA Finals in decisive fashion – prior to an offseason where they have only gotten stronger. At the same time, the only plausible challengers to their throne for this season – as things stand now, anyway – are their cross-hallway “rivals,” the Clippers and the new powerhouse in Brooklyn. All three of these teams, of course, are anchored by many of the biggest stars of the 2010s. Similarly, Golden State was poised to join them this year when their remaining (post-KD) stars returned full-time – until Klay Thompson went down for another season, delaying their (increasingly unlikely) return to the top level for another year. The Future Is Gonna Be Awesome

(But It’s Probably Not Here Yet) (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11) In terms of the future on the horizon, Dallas and Denver demonstrated in the bubble that they are close to championship material and that once they level up just a bit more, they’ll be perennial contenders. The same can be said for Boston and, shockingly, Miami. Milwaukee remains a top-tier contender if they can lock down the Greek Freak going forward. Unsurprisingly, with the Dynamic Duo of Zion Williamson and David Griffin, New Orleans is sequentially building a big-time winning program. Philly had a disappointing year, but with some retooling, they can’t be counted out of this conversation. (CONTINUED ON PAGE 13)

The Future Is

Gonna Be Awesome

(But It’s Probably

Not Here Yet)

(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 12) Beyond these teams, there’s not a 0% chance that Atlanta, Minnesota, Portland, Utah and Memphis acquire additional talent and become worthy of the above conversation. That’s more than half the league referenced as having championship potential to one degree or another in the 2020s – leaving aside that few if any of these teams are poised to benefit from the top of a historically great 2021 draft. So there’s some present-day bottom-feeders who could be breathing fire within a few years as well. Now, history indicates in the decade-by-decade figures above that there is always a winnowing process that takes place. Many of these teams won’t get a good sniff at the championship. But with the increasing difficulty in assembling more than two huge stars, much less more than three as Golden State once mustered, even the best team of the 2020s (which presently looks like Dallas) won’t be able to crowd out everyone else from the party throughout the decade – unless they sign Giannis next summer, in which case much of this picture would admittedly be moot. But we’re staring at a golden age in the NBA of many high-level competitive teams starting (or extending) great rivalries. We’re just not there yet. Give Lebron (and his contemporaries) another year to get older, give the younger players another year of seasoning and just sit back and wait. A new day is dawning in the NBA and it will be one of the most exciting periods that we’ve ever seen.
