7MESSAGES THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

FREUNDEL J. STUART,Q.C., M.P.

PRIME MINISTER OF BARBADOS

Fellow Barbadians, Canadians and Friends

On behalf of the Government and people of Barbados it gives me tremendous pleasure to convey best wishes to the organizers, sponsors, supporters, beneficiaries and friends of Barbados Ball Canada Aid, on the occasion of your 11th Annual Barbados Ball.

Having attended myself, I know that this Ball is one of the highlights on the social calendar of Toronto and beyond. It brings together hundreds of like-minded people - relatives, friends, neighbours and colleagues - from Barbados, the Caribbean, and beyond, to enjoy themselves in an atmosphere of tolerance and mutual respect. For many, this event brings back fond memories of yesteryear as they gather to reminisce, to share experiences and to commit resources to “good causes”.

This event also offers a sample of the Barbadian way of life that includes music and dance, culinary delights, wholesome entertainment and Barbadian traditions. I am convinced that we should build on this foundation by promoting Barbadian cultural goods and services more vigorously in Canada in order to develop our cultural industries.

I sincerely thank Barbados Ball Canada Aid for your support to worthy causes. The proceeds of this year’s Ball have been earmarked for donations to the John Rollock Memorial Scholarships Programme, the SickKids-Caribbean Initiative, the Barbados Olympic Association, and generally to help the most vulnerable members of communities in Barbados and its Diaspora in Canada.

This Ball offers the opportunity to promote the pursuit of excellence among Barbadians in Canada. I therefore heartily congratulate this year’s Award Winner, Dr. Paul Steinbok, a Barbadian migrant, for his brilliant achievements in Pediatric Neurosurgery. Professor Steinbok is an outstanding role model, not only for crossing new frontiers in his chosen discipline, but also for giving back much of his expertise to communities in Barbados, Jamaica, Canada, the USA and further afield.

In conclusion, I wish to thank each and every one of you for striving to create a better world. Here in Barbados we will continue to preserve the best that Barbados has to offer, for future generations, so that when you come back, or visit for the first time, you will find it one of the best places to spend your holidays, to invest and work, or to live.

Thank you.

A very warm welcome to all patrons of our 11th Annual Barbados Ball!

On behalf of Barbados Ball Canada Aid, thank you all for your support over the past year. Last year you attended the Ball in large numbers, sponsorship support was outstanding and funds raised from the silent and live auctions exceeded previous years’. Overall last year’s Ball was a great success and we are most appreciative of your on-going support.

Your generosity allowed us to do even more in supporting our charitable causes of education and healthcare. The John Rollock Memorial Scholarships Program reached new heights, with the number of scholarships granted increasing from 5 to 10 and a total of $30,000 being granted to help these deserving students achieve their dreams. In addition, we donated another $15,000 to the SickKids-Caribbean Initiative in keeping with our commitment to this project, which is aimed at improving the survival rate of childhood cancer and blood disorder victims in the Caribbean.

Also, in 2013 we took a major step in expanding the Barbados Ball family with the establishment of the Barbados Canada Foundation. The Barbados Canada Foundation is a Canadian registered charity that will manage the John Rollock Memorial Scholarships Program going forward. The Foundation also supports healthcare initiatives and other humanitarian causes.

This brings me now to tonight’s celebrations held under the theme “Memories of Yesteryear”. Tonight, we attempt to recreate a time from the not too distant bajan past. Through song and images we will give a glimpse of old Barbados. For those of us who have grown up on the island, these images will no doubt evoke many memories and maybe even a touch of homesickness. For those lovers of Barbados who visit the island often and even those of you who have never visited, we hope they will provide a sense of the rich and colourful culture of our island known as “Little England”. After all, you can go trekking in the Scotland district, watch cricket at Kensington and visit Trafalgar while still in Bridgetown.

International Barbadian Chef Paul Yellin has put together an impressive menu and is working hard in the kitchen with Pearson’s Chef Emilio to serve you a dinner with Bajan flare, that should bring back memories of “home”. I hope that you will enjoy tonight’s culinary experience.

Proceeds from tonight’s fundraising efforts will be used to continue our support of youth education and healthcare initiatives. In addition, we have earmarked proceeds for both the Paralympic Association of Barbados and Barbados Olympic Association to help these organizations as they strive to promote regular exercise and activity as a way of healthy living for people of all levels of ability.

Finally, ‘thank you’ to our sponsors – Scotiabank, Diproinduca (Barbados) Ltd, RBC Royalbank and G98.7FM -,donors, Team Barbados, our Board of Directors, Advisory Council, members and volunteers for your unfailing support of Barbados Ball Canada Aid, and the annual Barbados Ball. It is because of your support that we are able to make much valued charitable contributions to our communities both in Canada and Barbados.

Please enjoy the evening and may you have only pleasant memories of tonight to take away with you.

MARISA LINDSAY Vocalist and songwriter, Marisa Lindsay is a proud Barbadian born and raised. No stranger to the stage Marisa has toured the world as a representative of Barbados and has shared the stage with many international acts such as Air Supply, Brian Mc Knight, and Peabo Bryson, Macy Gray and Baby Face.

Convinced of the enormous potential of her talent, Thunder Dome Sounds CEO and Juno Award winning Producer, Eddie Bullen, took on the task of personally investing in the recording and the artistic development of Marisa in 2006.

In 2007 “Submit 2 Love”, Marisa’s debut album, presented her to the world as a major talent coming out of Barbados bridging the gap between Standard, Contemporary and Smooth Jazz. In 2009 the pair followed up with “Deeper Love, which marked her foray into R& B/Neo Soul, a departure from the jazz cover tunes that were predominant on her first album. Thunderdome Sounds is now set to release the first single from Marisa’s new album “Whatchugondo?” in the summer of 2014. As a passionate educator for the past 6 years, Marisa’s goal is to prepare the natural talent in Barbados to take international stages by storm.

ARTURO TAPPIN Arturo is definitely the smoothest, saxiest horn man the Caribbean has to offer. His dynamic and spirited live performances have won him fans the world over. He made headway with his debut recording “Strictly Roots Jazz” and then immediately followed up with a stellar performance on his second album entitled, “Java”, both licensed by Pioneer Records in Japan. For his cultural contributions to Jamaica and the Caribbean on the whole, Arturo recently received a nationally acclaimed Award of Excellence in the Arts from former Jamaican Prime Minister PJ Patterson.

Tappin has dazzled audiences at the Soho Jazz Festival, the Bob Marley Birthday Bash and Reggae Sunsplash, as well as headlining Jazz Festivals throughout the Caribbean. He has performed with the legendary Roberta Flack, Hard Bop Trumpeter Red Rodney, Grammy Award winning drummer Roy Haynes, Reggae Super Star Maxi Priest, R & B chart topper Anita Baker, South African Jazz Legend Hugh Masekela, and other luminaries of the music industry. Besides touring Arturo has served as the Musical Director for Eddy Grant as well as recorded with Grammy recipients Ralph MacDonald, and the late great Luther Vandross.

Arturo has had the privilege of playing for two American Presidents; President Bill Clinton and President Barack Obama. He has also performed for Cuba’s President Fidel Castro, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and most recently at the 2011 Duke of Edinburgh Black Tie Dinner. When asked what his future plans are in music he simply responded “Listen, practice, play, record.”

BIGGIE IRIE Born in the United Kingdom, Biggie Irie moved with his mother to Barbados at the age of three. He is best known for his molasses rich voice, and his powerful commandeering stage presence. He started his musical career in 1986 as lead vocalist with the young Barbadian reggae band EXODUS. Since then he has performed and recorded with THE SPLASHBAND, the only other group on the Island, besides Exodus, who dedicated their repertoire solely to reggae music. He toured extensively with THE SPLASHBAND traveling to Sweden, London, Toronto and New York. He also performed at REGGAE SUNSPLASH in Jamaica, where he appeared on stage with such internationally renowned artist such as Maxi Priest, Beres Hammond, Garnet Silk, and Byron Lee & The Dragonnaires.

The CD,”AN INTRODUCTION TO BIGGIE IRIE “was released in the USA in August 1999. This album marked his debut as a solo artist in the world of reggae music. The much-anticipated album “Where Is the Love” was released at the annual Congaline Music Festival in Barbados in April 2003. BIGGIE IRIE is one of Barbados’ most celebrated artists and is now a household name throughout the Caribbean and the US because of his hit song “Nah Goin’ Home”, released in the summer of 2006. In February 2007 Biggie won the “International Groovy Soca Monarch” Competition in Trinidad and Tobago with his hit song, and created history as the first non-Trinidadian Artist to ever win any competition in Trinidad.

Biggie continues to perform at major concerts, festivals and shows throughout the USA, UK and the Caribbean.

Barbados Ball Canada Aid is the product of the desire of the Barbadian community in Toronto to have an organization through which the community could support its youth and those is need both in Canada and Barbados, in a very substantial way.Over the last eleven years we were able to grant $105,000 in scholarships, donate $12,000 to support healthcare initiatives and $12,000 to assist Barbadians in need, largely with funds raised by the annual Barbados Ball.

We are presently committed to a donation of $50,000 to the SickKids-Caribbean Initiative, $35,000 of which has been disbursed to date and $15,000 to the Barbados Olympic/Paralympic Associations over 2 years; in addition to assisting youth through scholarship grants.

We are also pleased to report that in August last year; we were successful in establishing The Barbados Canada Foundation as a registered charity. The Foundation will manage the John Rollock Memorial Scholarships Program and support healthcare and other charitable causes. It is closely associated with Barbados Ball Canada Aid (BBCA), from which it will receive financial support. As the Foundation will be able to access tax-deductible charitable donations, we look forward to significant growth in our scholarship grants and contributions to healthcare.

BBCA and the Foundation exist to “help improve the lives of others”, a purpose we can maintain with your continued support.

WHAT ’S COOK IN ’?

My name is Shanice Yarde and I am a past recipient of the John Rollock Memorial Scholarship. I will be graduating from Concordia University in Montreal in June. I studied Human Relations and Psychology which seems natural since it is my passion to help and interact with people. With the financial support received from the John Rollock Memorial Scholarship I was able to focus on school while also working part-time and volunteering when I could.

I currently work for an organization called Youth Fusion which was created to reduce the high drop-out rate for high school students by creating partnerships between universities and high schools to engage the youth. I run a cooking program and math tutoring program at two Montreal high schools. I also recently started working at Head & Hands again where I will be assisting in the development and facilitation of the sex education program the organization offers.

I am also the founding member of a non-profit organization called the Black Foundation of Community Networks (BFCN) based in Vaughan, Ontario. We have several initiatives including our weekly Friday Focus program which focuses on math literacy and Black history for young Black youth as well as parent engagement. In addition, we offer annual scholarships and created the BFCN Scholarship Directory to support youth in their pursuit of post-secondary education.

I am so very grateful for the financial support received from BBCA through the John Rollock Memorial Scholarship. Scholarship grants such as these help students such as me achieve our aspirations and I commend BBCA for the work it is doing in helping to create opportunity within the Black community.
