STAR

OPINION It was fitting that former STAR editor’s John Foster funeral at St Barnabas Church in Ranskill should close with the song New York, New York. The choice of the Frank Sinatra classic was particularly apt in two ways. John, who died at the end of June after a short battle with leukaemia, was a lifelong fan of Rotherham United, whose new stadium was named the New York Stadium when it opened in 2012 after the historic name of the area of the town in which it was built. But perhaps, even more aptly, the song opens with the line “Start spreading the news.” As you will discover inside this month’s edition, John worked as a journalist for more than 40 years until his retirement in 2001, and then devoted much of his time to working on ensuring The STAR came out each month, as it has done since 1984. As his widow Chris put it: “I think he put as much into editing The STAR as he did into the Advertiser.” John’s death has left a big hole to fill in The STAR team. Having lived in Ranskill for more than 30 years, and been a parish councillor and part of the Scarecrow Festival committee, John had his finger on the pulse of what is happening in our villages. Reading this, you may think that there’s plenty happening in the three villages that readers should be aware of and you may consider the things that do get covered are just not that interesting. Unfortunately, there’s only so much time that a dad of three with a full-time job can spend sniffing out the latest local news. Also, The STAR can never be at the cutting edge of the news agenda. After all, it is a parish magazine and the people who help out are purely volunteers. So, in a nutshell, if you think you have a community issue or event that you would like to see in The STAR, then you need to let us know. Just drop us an email at [email protected] and we’ll try and include it in the next edition. But stories are not the only thing that The STAR needs to keep going each month. It might surprise you to know that it’s not particularly cheap to produce a free parish magazine. The committee is grateful for the financial contributions it receives from the parish councils each year, but declining advertising and the ever increasing price of paper means that some months The STAR is operating at a loss. This is something that is not sustainable over the long term, so if any local company has ever considered advertising or would be able to donate some paper, then now is the time to get in touch. It would mean a lot to John to know that The STAR’s future is in safe hands for another 34 years.

STAR editor: John Foster

John had a lifelong passion for spreading the newsTRIBUTES have been paid to STAR editor John Foster, who has died aged 74 after a short ill-ness.

John was a newspaper journalist for more than 40 years, until his retire-ment from The Rother-ham Advertiser, where he was the deputy editor.

John, who lived in Whitton Close, in Ran-skill with wife Chris, continued his love for spreading the news into retirement, editing the STAR.

Chris said: “He had a real passion for his job but he was also able to switch off from it fairly easily.

“We travelled quite a bit and he liked to read and walk the dog.

“After he retired, he did some work for the po-lice and some voluntary work.

“I think he put as much into editing The STAR as he did into the Adver-tiser.”

Lifelong Rotherham United fan ‘Fozzie’, as he was known to the jour-nalistic and football fra-

ternity, was a familiar sight in the Millers press box for more than half a century.

For most of that time he was the official Press Association correspond-ent for the Millers, fil-ing match reports and follow-up articles from every home game.

Born and bred in Rotherham, the son of a Kimberworth milkman, as a young reporter at the Advertiser he began cov-ering matches in his 20s during the 1960s.

John left his hometown and went to London to

join the sports desk on the capital’s principal evening paper The Stand-ard in 1968.

Two years later he re-joined the Advertiser as news editor and remained there until he retired in 2001.

John was also a parish councillor and the pub-licity officer for the Ran-skill and Torworth Scare-crow Festival and the Bawtry Phoenix Theatre Company.

Advertiser sports editor, Paul Rickett, a former colleague, de-scribed Mr Foster as “a real character”, adding: “He loved a good joke, told a few juicy ones him-self, could be stubborn and he didn’t suffer fools gladly but was always willing to offer a kind, supportive word when needed.”

Former colleague, Les Payne, who succeeded John as the Advertis-er’s Millers reporter said:recalled the day leg-endary Millers manager Tommy Docherty made an outrageous claim to young reporter John.

Les said: “When Tom-my Docherty signed Dave Watson, he told John that he’d sell him one day for £100,000, an unthinkable sum in 1967, and further claimed Watson would play for England one day.

“John said: ‘I said to him ‘Come off it Tommy, you’re joking – no one would believe that.’

“But Tommy was right. Three years later after the Doc had left, Watson was sold for £100,000 and went on to make 65 ap-pearances for England.”

John died at the end of June, three days be-fore his 75th birthday, 13 weeks after being diag-nosed with leukaemia.

John’s funeral was held at St Barnabas Church, Ranskill, followed by committal at Sherwood Forest Crematorium and refreshments with his family at the West Ret-ford Hotel.

Donations were mde for Ward A4 at Bassetlaw Hospital.n Words courtesy of the Rotherham Advertiser and www.themillers.co.uk.

Golden girl Olivia is the pride of ScoutsRANSKILL Scout Oliv-ia Teasdale has won the organisation’s highest award.

Elizabethan Academy pupil Olivia, aged 13, was awarded the Chief Scout’s Gold Award at 2nd Ranskill Scouts’ an-nual general meeting.

In order to achieve this Olivia has had to show considerable lead-ership and dedication to the Ranskill Scout Group. Each Scout has to have earned at least six of the nine Chal-lenge badges.

Olivia was awarded Challenge Awards for team leader, teamwork,

expedition, outdoors, adventure and skills.

Chairman Mark Mounde said: “This award is only given to a Scout who has truly embraced all that the Scouting movement has to offer and has shown throughout her time to be dedicated to the Troop and takes pride in developing the younger Troop mem-bers.”

Mum Keeley said: “Andrew and I are brim-ming with pride over what La has achieved with the Scouts. Her resilience, discipline and leadership skills

have definitely paid off, earning her this special award.”n Beaver numbers are on the increase which will provide the troop with a steady flow of numbers. n The position of sec-retary is now vacant after Bernie Bloevoet-Fletcher stepped down after three years. If you wish to fill the position contact the chairman.n The Scout Troop al-ways welcome new members. Contact lead-ers for a taster day.

Numbers can be found at the front of The STAR.

I would like to thank everyone who attended John’s funeral. I was overwhelmed by the number of people, and I know John would have been too. Also thank you to Reverend Irene Tissington for the beautiful service. The constant support, kindness and generosity of family, friends, neighbours and colleagues has carried me through many dark days over the past few months of John’s illness. And for this I am indebted. My heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you.I would also like to thank everyone for their very generous donations to Ward A4 at Bassetlaw Hospital where John spent his last few days. Donations currently total £500.

CHILDREN at Ranskill Primary School had a ‘wheelie’ special guest to help them officially open their new bike and scooter shelter.

Professional cyclist Graham Briggs, from Doncaster, who rides with team JLT Condor, cut the ribbon on the

new steel shelter which was created by Chris Campbell Designs of Mattersey using £10,000 Lottery funding and money raised by the school’s Parent Teachers’ Association.

Designs by the children and members of the community have

been incorporated into the design.

Also at the opening was Nottinghamshire County Councillor Tracey Taylor.

The shelter has been a big hit with children.

Headteacher Stuart Moody said: “The impact has been immediate.

Many more children are travelling to school by bike and scooter.”

Former PTA member Ann Charlton said: “It’s lovely to see what was once a bit of an eyesore completely transformed into a special piece of art which will last for many years to come.”

Rocks stars act outtheir dreams on stage

JUST four points sepa-rated first and second place in this year’s sports day at Ranskill Primary School.

Headteacher Stuart Moody said: “Congratu-lations go to Team 2 and their captain Josh Ket-

tlewell, who were the victors on the day. Well done to all – it was a fun friendly competition and everybody achieved!”

The sale of refresh-ments on the day by PTA members, plus money raised at a Body Shop

evening brought in £240 for school funds.

The year six leavers en-joyed a fantastic barbe-cue and games afternoon at Scrooby Village Hall on a scorching hot day.

Mrs Throssell’s pupils were also due to spend a

fun-packed day at Barns-ley Metrodome to mark the end of their time at primary school.

The two performances of Year 5 and 6 produc-tion, Darwin Rocks, was a big hit with friends and family.

Lovely Lurchers and Gorgeous Greyhounds

This month, your local RSPCA Animal Centre is focussing on beautiful rescue Lurchers and Greyhounds. They are independent thinkers, intelligent and highly trainable, and they love a puzzle, such as where have you hidden the biscuits. Keeping Lurchers and Greyhounds in tip top condition takes a lot less effort than you would think. Calm and affectionate, they make a super family pet and

are intensely loyal. They have a keen instinct for exercise, they are speedy but only use it in short bursts where they use up usually all of their energy in one sprint and then promptly retire to a comfy bed. They are gentle and affectionate but love a good tug o’ war or to chew a toy in between naps. They sleep in really weird positions – usually on their back in a sunny spot on the floor, or your couch, with their head twisted awkwardly and their legs contorted. You get accustomed to it, but at first it can be quite startling; yes they are comfortable. They are also adorable! From

their bright glossy eyes, their pricked up ears, and their big goofy noses to their long, swishy waggy tails, Lurchers and Greyhounds are hard not to fall head over heels in love with once you get to know them. Come and see our beautiful boys and girls, they are waiting just for you.The RSPCA Animal Centre on the Great North Road, near Bawtry, DN10 6DE, is open six days a week 11am-4pm (closed Wednesdays). Also visit www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk for the latest news and more information on how you can help support our animal welfare operations.

Mattersey Post Office & General StoreAs you will be aware the Post Office & General Store has recently been for sale. We are now delighted to announce that it has now been sold subject to contract and it is the intention of the new owner that it remains open under the management of Norman and Nicola. They are excited at this new opportunity and plan to develop both the business and facilities that they offer.

Already they have secured a contract with Royal Mail for undelivered parcels to be left at the Post Office instead of returning to Doncaster, (mainly due to Bawtry Post Office closure). This means that local residents will soon no longer have to drive to Doncaster to collect their items in the future. Our beautiful village has very few facilities so this news is most welcome. By using the

Post Office and the store ensures that it remains. The store is looking to the future and your thoughts and ideas are welcome. Remember this is YOUR local store.Norman & Nicola would like to take this opportunity to thank all their customers for their support and look forward to welcoming you in store very soon.

Full bloom: Judges running the rule over the beautiful sweet peas, above, and below, people enjoying cream teas in the shade

Heaven-scent gifts on a summer’s afternoon

A BEAUTIFUL sum-mer’s day, cream teas and the heady scent of sweet peas...

This was the quintes-sentially English scene in Scrooby for the sec-ond sweet peas compe-tition.

Peter Harris again travelled from Crow-thorne in Berkshire, to help with the serious business of judging the classes – one colour, mixed colour and scent.

The first two classes were won by Sarah Ar-mitage from Doncaster, and the scent class was won by Heidi Robbins from Scrooby.

Sarah’s mixed colour sweet peas were also judged best in show.

Many people bought cakes and scones along for a cream tea.

A collection of £250

was donated to Mé-decins Sans Fron-tières to help support their work providing lifesaving medical

humanitarian relief where it is needed most in the world.

£200 was collected to help send organiser

Ann Robbins’ grand-daughter Fran to the 24th World Scout Jam-boree in West Virgin-ia, USA next year.

Garden Bird of the Month – The Swallow

One bird which epitomises summertime is the Swallow, or more correctly, the Barn Swallow. This bird will have travelled about 6,000 miles all the way from southern Africa and over the perilous Sahara Desert to reach our shores. What a feat!

I am sure many of you are familiar with the Barn Swallow. It is a streamlined bird and has deep blue glossy back and cream coloured underparts. It has a red flush on the forehead and under the bill. The wings are long and pointed and its tail is forked and is much longer than that of the House Martin or Swift with which it can be confused. The male has longer tail streamers than the female.

Only a few of us are fortunate to have Swallows nesting on our properties as they normally prefer to build their cup-shaped mud nests in open barns or outbuildings. Some will nest in porches and even bird hides. It is lovely to hear the twittering call of these birds as they fly over fields and open water while catching their food on the wing. In early autumn when they are about to migrate, they can be seen and heard in large numbers, chattering away on overhead wires.

Enjoy the sight and sounds of these graceful birds as they stay with us during the summer months.

HOW TO IMPROVE FAMILY LIFE WITH A TEENAGE CHILD Many families have challenging times with their children when they become teenagers. They become moody, avoid other family members, spend too much time in their bedrooms on their gadgets... and as a result adults believe that families become less important to children as they move into their teenage years. But your child needs your family and the support it offers as much as they did when he or she was younger! It’s normal for teenagers to be moody or seem uncommunicative, but they still need you. Your child still loves you and wants you to be involved in their life, even though at times their attitude, behaviour or body language might seem to say they don’t. There are 7 tips on how to improve your family life with your teenage child:

1. Have regular family meals - you can chat about your days, make plans and talk about amazing memories you shared.

2. Spend quality time with your child: it is the perfect opportunity for you to share the issues you had when you were a child and how you overcame them. It is important not to lecture your child during these sessions.

3. Family traditions: having a movie night or a Chinese meal on the same day builds a routine and a healthy habit of sharing the same experience together as a family.

4. Celebrate achievements: big or small, every day or occasionally - there is always something to celebrate in various ways! It helps to build your child's confidence and self-esteem, and motivates them to do more!

5. Sharing household chores: children don't become good cooks or tidy adults in one day, therefore sharing household chores helps them to learn life and family skills, as well as saving you time. The extra time can always be spent together!

6. Rules: whether it is about bed time or setting new standards - it is about teaching your child that there are certain things in life you must do and if you don't that there are consequences. Life is not only about rules, but they help all of us!

7. Family bonding times: very special time with family connects everyone! Since I launched the Family Reunion sessions I have personally witnessed how team building, story telling, sharing experiences and overcoming challenges has helped family members bond with each other!

Remember: all that you do now for your family and children will be paid back to you when you get older. If you want to have caring children and loving grandchildren - show how brilliant you are at parenting now!

YOUR GARDENING MONTH: AUGUST August is really a time to enjoy your garden. I know I keep reminding you, but we do tend to forget about the garden when we go away, so make sure that you have made arrangements

for watering with a neighbour or friend. Get them to pick and use the fruit and vegetables that are ready. It is a way of saying thank you to them for helping you, plus it will not only encourage the plants to produce more but will also save it going to waste, which would be a great shame after all the hard work put in.

This is the main time of year to pick fruit — strawberries and raspberries may still be cropping, and early apples and plums. A friend of mine is saying that this will be one of the best years for plums and their tree is already laden with fruit and the branches are be-ing weighed down. The first crops of apples do not store well and should be eaten before the skins wrinkle. Continue to prune trained trees and soft fruit. Once blackberries and other briar fruit have finished fruiting, remove the old ones and tie new ones to prevent them whipping about in the wind. Strawberry runners should have developed into substantial plants. Pot them up or plant in new beds, unless the weather is very hot and leave them until next month when it is slightly cooler. Remember to remove plants that are over 5 years old as they have come to the end of their life — they will still produce fruit for a few more years but it will be smaller and not so juicy.

Make sure the greenhouse is well shaded and give plants plenty of water. Keep the atmosphere moist and deter red spider mite by pouring water on the floor and allowing to evaporate. It may seem early but now is the time to think about next year and take cuttings from fuchsias and pelargoniums so that they have rooted well before winter and will be good sized plants for next year.

Layering is a useful way of increasing your stock of carnations and many woody plants — it is a very useful way of propagating plants that are very difficult to root. The simplest way is to bend down a stem and bury it in the soil. This can be done on many shrubs. Another way is to remove the leaves from a length of stem where you wish rooting to occur and make a slanting cut partially through the stem on the underside. Dig a hole and place the cut part of the stem in the hole and peg it down then water well. It may take a long time for some plants to root so be patient. Cut the stem to the parent plant when ready and transplant to its new home.

Make sure, when cutting the lawn, that you move the cutting blades up one notch so that it gives the grass more chance and will not be too short and scorch in the hot weather. In the summer months, paths and lawns get well trodden down so, if you can, aerate the ground and make holes in the lawn so that both air and water can enter. Earthworms make one of the best natural aerators so do not try to discourage them with chemicals.

Green tip: Do not burn hedge trimmings, shred them. After two to three months in a compost heap they will make an ideal mulch to place along the hedge to feed it, pre-serve moisture and keep down the weeds.

MARRIED 4 HUSBANDS

The local news station was interviewing an 80-year lady because she had just got married for the fourth time. The interviewer asked about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband’s occupation. “He’s a funeral director”, she answered. “Interesting”, the newsman thought. He then asked her if she wouldn't mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living. She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she had first married a banker when she was in her 20s, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40s, and a preacher when in her 60s, and now — in her 80s — a funeral director. The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers. She smiled and explained .. “I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.”

SEASONAL RECIPES

In season this month are aubergines, courgettes and tomatoes, luxurious lobster and scallops, and summer berries (including raspberries, redcurrants and blackberries).

Aubergines work brilliantly in salads, stews or as part of a mezze platter. They can be found in baba ganoush, moussaka and curry.

CLASSIC MOUSSAKA (serves 4) - 15 mins preparation time + 1½ hrs cooking time

5 tbsp. olive oil 1 large onion, finely chopped 1 tbsp. tomato puree 500g lean lamb mince 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 200ml red wine 400g can chopped tomatoes 1 cinnamon stick 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 large free-range egg yolk 2-3 large aubergines, thickly sliced 1 tsp dried oregano 75g butter 75g Parmesan, grated 75g plain flour 600ml milk pinch of freshly grated nutmeg pinch of caster sugar Method: Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large pan over a medium heat — add the onion and fry for 5 minutes, stirring, until soft. Add the garlic and cumin and fry for 1 minute.

Add the tomato puree and fry for 1 more minute then turn up the heat and add the lamb — season and fry for 5 minutes until browned all over. Pour away any excess oil.

Add the wine and cinnamon then, after 2-3 minutes, add the tomatoes, 100ml water, the sugar and oregano. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick. Season.

Meanwhile, heat a griddle pan until very hot. Brush the aubergine with the rest of the oil, season and griddle on both sides until golden brown. Set aside on kitchen paper.

Make a white sauce by melting the butter in a small pan then adding the flour and stirring to make a roux (paste). Remove from the heat and gradually stir in the milk. Place over a gentle heat and simmer, stirring, until thickened. Remove from the heat, stir in the egg yolk and half the cheese. Season to taste.

Layer the aubergine and mince in a 2-litre ovenproof dish. Repeat, then spread the white sauce on top. Scatter with the remaining cheese and sprinkle with the nutmeg. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden. Serve with a green salad.

SCROOBY SHOW FOCACCIA RECIPE 500g strong white bread flour 5g dried yeast 10g fine salt 325ml warm water About 1 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for coating Finish with olive oil, sea salt and rosemary Not too many clues here, just the ingredients. Bakers skills will be tested by their ability to produce the perfect focaccia.

Little mouse, sitting there On the doorstep cold and bare. I have some rubbish for the bin But daren't come out — or you’ll come in. I wish you’d find some place to hide; If I come out, you’ll come inside. That would change the whole affair — You in here and me out there, I cannot deign for you to win, Me without and you within. Christian Perspective

If you’re growing fruit and veg-etables this is a good time of year for having lots of fresh produce. But it takes a good deal of effort to keep the ground in good order, well fer-tilized, with weeds and pests under control. But there’s nothing quite as satisfying as fresh vegetables with your dinner when you have pro-duced them yourself. I think they taste so much better when they are picked fresh from your own garden. Jesus, in his helpful way to make us understand spiritu-al truths, likens believers in him to branches on a grape-vine. He says in John 15:1-17 that he is the grapevine and we are the branches, and in fact, it is our heavenly Father who is the gardener. God does all the hard work to

make the sap flow through from the stock to the branch-es. But we have to make sure we are connected in if we want to be fruitful for his king-dom. Indeed, if we are not fruitful, then he has further work to do: “He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes or cleans so that it will be even more fruitful.” v2 Jesus goes on to say that we must keep on leaning into him, making sure we are connected into his abundant life. “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must re-main in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you re-main in me.” v4

There’s both a warning and an amazing promise in the part that comes next. Je-sus says any that don’t abide in him are thrown away and wither. That’s the warning, but here’s the wonderful prom-ise: “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing your-selves to be my disciples.” vv7-8 There is joy and love and friendship with Jesus, fruitfulness and answered prayer when we remain in him. And, finally, in verses 16-17 we read these precious words, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and ap-pointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Fa-ther will give you. This is my command: Love each other. May you be fruitful as you keep on seeking Jesus, putting him first and abiding in him. Brenda Critchley

Puzzle for August 2018

Sudoku is a number placement puzzle. The aim of Sudoku is to complete the grid by entering numbers from 1 to 9 in each empty cell of the 9×9 grid which comprises 9 sub-grids each with 9 cells in a 3×3 pattern. Each row, column and sub-grid must contain only one instance of each number.

There are variants of Sudoku. In this puzzle there are 4 groups of shaded cells. Each of these shaded cells must also contain the num-bers 1 to 9. The solution is included elsewhere in the STAR.

Ranskill Parish Council Newsletter (including extracts from the draft minutes of the meeting on 10th July 2018)

JOHN FOSTER

Ranskill Parish Councillor and Editor of The Star John Foster sadly passed away in June. John had been a parish councillor for 10 years and his contribution to the village during that time, especially

his work as editor of The Star, was considerable. He will be remembered by all his fellow councillors with respect and affection. We will miss him.

HIGHWAYS and PARKING The Parking Enforcement officer is now regularly attending the Station Road/Great North Road junction in response to the Parish Council’s concerns over the illegally and potentially dangerously parked vehicles at the top of Station Rd. The situation is continuing to cause concern and the police have advised that any resident who is subject to threats or intimidating behaviour from drivers should call 101 and make a formal report. Even if no action is taken by the Police at the time, please consider that if they receive a number of calls about this issue they are more likely to take action in the future. The Parish Council are also looking into whether Parking Enforcement are able to issue tickets on the basis of photographic evidence.

FINANCES Bank balances at 30 June 2018: Current account £100, reserve account £37,202.04 The following payments were approved for July 2018:

PLANNING Two new planning applications were considered by councillors at their July meeting: Application 18/00733/HSE – 17 Stonehill Close to erect a rear garage extension and application 18/00788/HSE – 4 Southfall Close to raise the height of the garage to form a bedroom and to alter the porch. Councillors had no objections to the proposals. Bassetlaw District Council have granted planning permission for application 18/00501/HSE – 7 Arundel Drive to replace the existing rear extension with a larger single storey extension and application 18/00577/TPO for work to various trees at Belmont House on Mattersey Road. Bassetlaw District Council have also now granted permission for application 17/0031/OUT for the housing development on Great North Road (32 homes). However, before anything can happen negotiations will be undertaken between Bassetlaw DC and the developer to agree various legal requirements such as an education contribution to the local school, an open spaces contribution, implementation and maintenance of drainage requirements etc. This can be a lengthy process so the building work is unlikely to start for some time. Bassetlaw DC have also requested that an archaeological investigation in the form of a geophysical survey is conducted on the site before work can commence.

AMENITIES AND FACILITIES The footpath which runs between Mattersey Road and Station Avenue and those in Birch Wood have been kept clean and tidy for many years by the Community Payback Team. However, recently they have been unable to strim the nettles and overgrowth on land at the sides of the paths because some dog owners are throwing their used dog-waste bags into this undergrowth, and when the team come to strim it they have on occasions been sprayed with dog faeces. PLEASE always put your dog-waste bag in a bin. You can put dog-waste in a normal waste bin as long as it is bagged.

BURIAL GROUND As mentioned in the last newsletter, this month (weather permitting) a contractor will be working on behalf of Ranskill and Torworth Joint Burial Committee to fill, level and re-seed a number of plots where the ground has sunk due to the very wet and rainy conditions we had at the start of this year. In addition, later in the year, the Burial Committee will be employing a mason qualified to carry out memorial safety checks to inspect all of the headstones in the new area of the cemetery to ensure that they are safely anchored. This inspection will not include the memorials in the old part of the cemetery which is owned and maintained by St Barnabus Church. This work is something the Burial Committee have to undertake at least every five years as part of their duty of care, particularly as there have been unfortunate accidents elsewhere in the country where toppling headstones have caused injury.

ENVIRONMENT Much of the construction work at the site is now complete. However, as yet no date has been given as to when the exploratory drilling will start.

RANSKILL PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS The next Parish Council Meeting will be held at St Barnabas Church on Tuesday 11th September at 7:30pm. Members

of the public and press are welcome to attend. Parish Clerk: Mel Malcolm 07584 169028 or [email protected]
